Inglis goes after Palin: 'Lowest form of political leadership'

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/06/08/art.inglis.gi.jpg caption ="GOP Rep. Bob Inglis criticized Sarah Palin and his own party in an interview with the Associated Press published Friday."](CNN) - Republican Rep. Bob Inglis, who last month lost a primary battle to retain his seat, is now taking aim at some members of his own party - the second ousted Republican to express frustration with the GOP in as many weeks.

In an interview with the Associated Press and confirmed to CNN by his office, Inglis targets the "death panels" phrase made famous by Sarah Palin when the former Alaska governor inaccurately claimed the Democratic-backed health care legislation would ration health care for the elderly.

"There were no death panels in the bill … and to encourage that kind of fear is just the lowest form of political leadership. It's not leadership. It's demagoguery," said Inglis, who lost his primary challenge to conservative Trey Gowdy by 42 points last month and faced heavy criticism for voting in favor of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) in 2009.

In a series of Facebook posts last summer, Palin repeatedly suggested the health care legislation would amount to rationing and coined the phrase "death panels" to suggest government bureaucrats, not doctors, would determine the type of health care one receives.

The de-bunked phrase was quickly repeated by detractors of the bill and is credited with spurring heated opposition to the measure.

Inglis said such words amount to "preying on [voter's] fears."

"I think we have a lot of leaders that are following those [television and talk radio] personalities and not leading," he said. "What it takes to lead is to say, 'You know, that's just not right.'"

The comments from Inglis, who has served in Congress since 1993, come two weeks after Bob Bennett, - the Republican senator who was cast aside by his party in a primary earlier this year - suggested the GOP is devoid of fresh ideas.

"As I look out at the political landscape now, I find plenty of slogans on the Republican side, but not very many ideas," Bennett told The Ripon Society, a Republican think tank last month.

"The concern I have is that ideology and a demand for absolute party purity endangers our ability to govern once we get into office," Bennett also said.

Way to finally talk about a major problem within your party, Mr. Inglis! We're all so proud. Too bad you did so A. Long after the legislation in your example was passed into law, and B. After you suffered a primary defeat by a margin that would have made Walter Mondale wince. Your credibility and chance of effecting real change are therefore nonexistent. What a hero.

The Republican party may see short term gains by allowing the far right to dictate their platform, purging those that dare disagree but they are dead wrong if they think this is a long term, sustainable strategy. This has always been a middle of the road country and ever since Newt Gingrich put forth his scorched earth philiosophy, the Republicans have been moving further and further to the right. Inglis and Bennet were both competent leaders for their constituents, but dared not speak out for fear of losing and in the end, lost anyhow. Others, such as McCain are flip flopping on past positions with dizzying speed in order to save their jobs. (Must be some perks if you're willing to sell your soul to keep them!) I am no longer interested in supporting them because they aren't willing to listen to ideas that don't meet the conservative litmus test. I've always thought of R's as center right and D's as center left. Conservatives and liberals are too far in either direction for the majority but time will tell.

If the Republicans had to stick to the truth, they wouldn't have much to say.

    I disagree.

The neo-cons have the perfect set up for November.

    1. Sharron "Anarchist" Angle that wants to dismantle SS, etc.

    2. Rand Paul aka Palin with a penis, wants to return to days of "Whites Only".

    3. Barton the smegma of mankind, who apologizes to his true "constitutents" big oil.

GObP, sort of says it all.

Chickens coming home to roost. Let's see what happens after November 2nd when really disgruntled Republicans who lost in the primaries no longer have to keep their mouth shut since the elections will be over with by then.

Remember the Alamo- then remember to turn off your Caps Lock. It doesn't make your lunacy come across any louder.

By the way, Medicare IS government funded socialist medicine.

I hate ignorance, too, unless it's funny. You're funny.

Slowly but surely some of the republicans are beginning to see what Sarah is like. Nothing but hate and lies that come out of her. Thanks to the people of Alaska we have to listen to all of this. She never has any solutions for any thing. Every time she makes a speech she has to put the president down and she even goes to a foreign country to do it. Does the american people want this person near the white house? If she does get the nomination to run, the rest of them will make minced meat out of her. Would be fun to watch a debate, Of course Sarah would have to know the questions ahead of time and have her note cards with her. But then she acts like she cant even read. It is a shame that her parents brought her up this way with all the hate an lies that come out of her.

Remember the Alamo, you have zero clue as to what you are talking about. You are repeating the very things Inglis is talking about and you are so foolish you don't see it. I work in Healthcare and you do not understand the first thing about Medicare. You need to go read up on it before you make comments that make you look silly and feel free to knock off the caps.

Wonder why Inglis lost his primary. Love these weak men who love to beat up on women when they come up short.

Palin is no longer in office but thanks to Inglis and wingbat liberals she will make millions off books and speaking engagements indefinitely. She ought to put cnn on the payroll for all the marketing on the ticker.

CNN failed to mention that this story comes out of none other than South Carolina. That should be enough right there to tell you what's going on. Something in the air or water in that state has been poisoning Repugnants for years now.

Apparently, Inglis was away from SC long enough to recover somewhat and realize that Palin was an idiot, and a dangerous one at that.

If you want to see why the republican party is in such a bad state, just read the comments to this article. The only thing the conservative movement has to go in is hate and anger. The problem is hate and anger don't solve problems. America will never be the land of "Leave it to Beaver" and "Father Knows best", it never was. No can we all admit it and get on with the very hard work of making America better.

Oh dude! You are SO going to have to apologize to Rush Limbaugh after this!

But on a more serious note: Rep. Inglis, you would have so much more credibility (and probably would have won the primary) if you had quite loudly spoken out against the stupidity of Palin before you were ousted. As an Independent, I am more apt to vote for Democrats (and I'm not happy with them either) because Repubs are afraid to stand up against their own party for what's truly right, rather than the party line.

Pass that message on to your colleagues.

wbn @3:16 – what do you call it now when an insurance company refuses to treat a curable disease because it is not cost effective? Do you really believe your government is going to decide who lives and who dies? Your ignorance is astounding!

You obviously have no idea what health care is all about, and how it actually works. If you are old, and need say a heart valve or kidney replaced, you get tested to determine if surgery is feasible – in other words if you're not dying of some other incurable disease.

I do NOT feel sorry for Bob Bennett....nor the rest of the Republican leadership. They allowed Palin and the Tea Party idiots to take over the debate with what is nothing more than b.s. thinking. Rather than tell the truth and give the American people an honest assessment of the issues, they've let the empty headed "mouths" serve their purpose—to divide and (hopefully) conquer. They've divided, allright, but they've not conquered! And Mr. Bennett and some others who kept shut up in the beginning are looking for work!

It was John Arbuthnot who said, "All political parties die at last of swallowing their own lies." The Republican party is headed that way if it doesn't re-establish some honor, integrity and sense of honesty!!

I am not sure what else he expected from Alaskas most fraudulent Governor in history. Palin is first and foremost most well known for her life of lies, and to give Americas biggest liar a forum behind Facebook to spew her hate and lies is a embarrasment to all Americans. For someone that jumped from college to college, to a horrible Mayor, then an ethics ridiculed fraudulent Governor to having the ability to lie to the masses every single day she prooves that Ameicans are easily sucked into her web of lies.

The GOP must remain pure... don't want it to be sullied by things such as individual thought... reasoning... logic...
