NAACP to condemn 'racism' of the Tea Parties

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/07/12/art.teaparty.jpg caption ="The NAACP will offer its members a resolution condemning the Tea Party for what it calls rampant racism."]Washington (CNN) - On Tuesday the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will offer a resolution to its members condemning what it believes to be rampant racism in the Tea Party movement.

The resolution could pass on Tuesday or later this week as the nation's oldest civil rights organization holds its 101st convention in Kansas City over six days.

NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Jealous talked to CNN about the controversial, loose-knit groups that espouse a commitment to the Constitution.

"The Tea Party movement knows that there are tens of thousands of dedicated racists and ultra nationalists in their ranks," Jealous said. Those groups "must be repudiated by the regular, law-abiding members or they must take responsibility," Jealous added, saying "they can't have it both ways."

In addition to urging people to repudiate those "racist" elements among Tea Partiers, the resolution also says that elements of the conservative movement are driving to push the nation back to the pre-civil rights era. The story about the resolution was first reported Monday in the Kansas City Star.

Other claims from the NAACP: Tea Party activists have engaged in racist behavior, for example, by waving signs that degrade African-Americans and President Obama, in particular; members of the movement have verbally and physically abused black members of Congress and other elected officials; and a number of Tea Party activists think that issues of importance to African-Americans get too much attention.

The Tea Party Express, a national Tea Party organization, is angry about the resolution.

"This is indeed the kettle calling the pot black," Mark Williams, national spokesman of the conservative grassroots group, told CNN.

"We're fighting the government programs that have emasculated the black family," Williams said.

He added: "It's the Obama administration that rolled back civil rights to a pre-civil rights era with 'Obamacare' in which they removed the concept of individual rights…it's the Obama administration that put a tax on white people with a tanning salon tax. I mean, this is the kind of stuff the Tea Party movement is fighting. We are fighting for the Constitution of this country, which, by definition, makes this a human rights movement – a civil rights movement."

"It's the 21st century and their rights as humans are absolutely at risk here. And the threat doesn't come from those people who love the Constitution. It comes from those people in power in Washington right now," Williams said.

    Who are the Tea Partiers?

They are the White Conservative Republicans who listened to Rush Lumlard back in 2008 when Rush told his conservative Republicans to change their voters registrations to Independent so that they can throw the 2008 Democratic primaries so that Republicans win the 2008 general election. But that move only backed-fired. And Obama ended up winning the 2008 general election instead.

Now those same so called Independents, who are really Republican Wolves in Independent Sheep's Clothing and calling themselves Tea Partiers, are being more and more misleading, manipulative as ever.

When you are clueless, claim racism. Wake up, this has NOTHING to do with race. Many of the same people who voted for Obama the black man, are now in the TEA party movement. Logic would tell you it is Obama's attempt to socialize America that has this movement growing.

    The NAACP is a joke.

The TEA PARTY is about TAXES and SPENDING, not race.

Nice Try to deflect from OBOZO's policies.

yes, in order to love the Constitution, you must tan in a salon.

yes, in order to ensure your human rights are protected, you must tan in a salon.

yes, in order to ensure you maintin your individuality, you must tan in a salon.

in order to be black, you may NOT tan in a salon.

do you think the Tea Party Members have turned 10 years old yet?

Racism! That word is becoming like the boy who cried wolf, so over used with absolutely no substance that we are no longer listening. When you don't have a leg to stand on, cry racism.

yeah for the NAACP! The Tea Party can deny all they want to and some members do not act Racist, but the fact is they are. Just look at the views they espouse. I know people are tired of the cry of Racist, but sometimes it fits. I grant them their right to their opinions, but I have the right also to call them Racist. I would not be surprised if some rabid tea party member would soon attempt to assasinate the President as he is not a White Anglo-Saxon male.

Do you enjoy your "DUE PROCESS OF LAW?" Do you like your "EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAWS?"

Well House Republicans in Arizona wrote up new legislation to eliminate Amendment XIV Section 1 which was originally added to the Bill of Rights and Amended to the Constitution. And those Arizona House Republicans have been trying to get that legislation passed in Washington.

Yep that Do Nothing with their "HELL NO!" votes Republican Party are now trying to do the most despicable thing ever. Republicans are trying to take our "DUE PROCESS OF LAW" and our "EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAWS" away from us.

Yet Republicans claim to be protectors of the Constitution. Will wonders ever cease to exist?

  11. It is about time!

It is about damn time! And I know of what I speak. I have several members of my husband's family that I have witnessed with their racists remarks since Barack Obama came on the scene in 2007. And they are all active in the tea party klan and are all registered repubs. Believe me. It was a real eye opener to me to see and hear their racism in full bloom, and very, very disappointing. You know what they say: "You can pick your friends, but not your family".

just like the ACLU and their "warning" about travel in AZ – the NAACP (another irrelevant organization) is following their marching orders like good little servants of the Obama admin.

Where was the tea party when Bush sent us to War? Where was the Tea Party when Bush Bankrupt this Country? Where is the Tea Party for our children who lives are at stake for fighting a bad War? I am so sick of the Tea Party pretending they are fighting for the American peoples right. Listen to how they talk. ( we are going to take back this country) that sounds just like racism take it back from whom, we all live here. That is why other countries say we are a joke. We fight and lie to each other just so that the rich can stay rich. Exactly who is rich white people. Also the black people that are is in the Tea Party you better open up your eyes next thing you know you are in the big house cooking and cleaning for the Tea Party just like in slavery days.

So you are not allowed to criticize the Obamessiah without being called a racist? The NAACP continues to stride into irrelevancy, and to marginalize itself.

Why don't they concentrate on black crime, black drop-out rates, black unemployment, black absentee fathers, and black unwed mothers, instead of blaming the Tea Party for its troubles? As the real Messiah said, don't worry about the speck in my eye when you have a log in your own eye.

Thanks to all those Republican "HELL NO!" votes against Financial Reform, the Banks have been underhanded in their mortgage home loans again with those Prime Adjustable Rate Mortgage Loans.

Yep, thanks to the Republican "HELL NO!" votes, the Banks have gotten Bold with bringing back the same mortgage loans that caused the economic crises and destroyed our housing industry in the first place.

Again its the same old NAACP tactic....call anyone who disagrees with them "a racist". They have thrown the "racist" card so many times the accusation no longer has any meaning.

The NAACP is an irrelevant relic of the 1960's. It is time to move on.

Do you think while they are addressing the unfounded claims of racism of the TEA Party they could address the very real racism committed by the Department of Justice by failing to prosecute the Black Panthers of Philadelphia for voter itimidation? I know they won't but it is a nice counter point to the big liberal lies versus the reality isn't it.

    July 12, 2010 03:06 pm at 3:06 pm |

Well of COURSE the Teabaggers are not racists...they are upset about Obama taxing tanning booths! That means OBAMA is the racist, not them.

Wow....that is the most shockingly stupid come-back ever.

and by the way...the Teabaggers know NOTHING about the consititution at all..which is obvious by their completely misguided rhetoric, their stupid comments, their misinformed statements, and general lack of direction whatsoever.

That has to be one of the more convoluted descriptions of a Civil Rights stand that I've ever heard. Tanning salon tax is a tax on white people? I understand that many of the Tea Party people are not a bit racist, but they invite this kind of condemnation when they refuse to condemn the excesses of their extremist elements or condemn them with so many excuses and quailifiers that it's meaningless.
