NAACP to condemn 'racism' of the Tea Parties

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/07/12/art.teaparty.jpg caption ="The NAACP will offer its members a resolution condemning the Tea Party for what it calls rampant racism."]Washington (CNN) - On Tuesday the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will offer a resolution to its members condemning what it believes to be rampant racism in the Tea Party movement.

The resolution could pass on Tuesday or later this week as the nation's oldest civil rights organization holds its 101st convention in Kansas City over six days.

NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Jealous talked to CNN about the controversial, loose-knit groups that espouse a commitment to the Constitution.

"The Tea Party movement knows that there are tens of thousands of dedicated racists and ultra nationalists in their ranks," Jealous said. Those groups "must be repudiated by the regular, law-abiding members or they must take responsibility," Jealous added, saying "they can't have it both ways."

In addition to urging people to repudiate those "racist" elements among Tea Partiers, the resolution also says that elements of the conservative movement are driving to push the nation back to the pre-civil rights era. The story about the resolution was first reported Monday in the Kansas City Star.

Other claims from the NAACP: Tea Party activists have engaged in racist behavior, for example, by waving signs that degrade African-Americans and President Obama, in particular; members of the movement have verbally and physically abused black members of Congress and other elected officials; and a number of Tea Party activists think that issues of importance to African-Americans get too much attention.

The Tea Party Express, a national Tea Party organization, is angry about the resolution.

"This is indeed the kettle calling the pot black," Mark Williams, national spokesman of the conservative grassroots group, told CNN.

"We're fighting the government programs that have emasculated the black family," Williams said.

He added: "It's the Obama administration that rolled back civil rights to a pre-civil rights era with 'Obamacare' in which they removed the concept of individual rights…it's the Obama administration that put a tax on white people with a tanning salon tax. I mean, this is the kind of stuff the Tea Party movement is fighting. We are fighting for the Constitution of this country, which, by definition, makes this a human rights movement – a civil rights movement."

"It's the 21st century and their rights as humans are absolutely at risk here. And the threat doesn't come from those people who love the Constitution. It comes from those people in power in Washington right now," Williams said.

happy to see the NAACP is still alive however what is the hot topic for discussion? racism well It seems as though the organization forgot their mission for decades and now want to wave the red flag. while white people are killing blacks and incarcerating them by the thousands you are just now speaking out what a shame. You have taken a position on illegal aliens having rights here in this country which amounts to a path to citizenship and a slap on the wrists for their brazen criminal behavior. blacks have for decades under both democratic and republican presidents and the do nothing congress including the black caucus.have been discriminated against and racially profiled. blacks continue to be profiled daily but our pseudo leaders like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are rallying in Arizona while hundreds are being killed in Chicago daily and blacks in New york and around the nation are either being dragged by a white man behind a pickup truck or being killed by a racist cop and where is the NAACP, the Urban league- out marching or holding silly conferences with white folk who have allowed them a seat at the table. this is disgusting to see the state of the black society especially under a half black president and a black attorney General I am ashamed to be a black American. The black society have gotten the shortest end of the shit stick for ever and some of our own have helped shorten the stick and apply the crap to the stick. we will never rise up as long as we are sold out by each other. I commend you for your interest in what the tea party people are representing but they aren't the only ones check out the super prejudice justice system for blacks and the president and many in congress etc. this is long over due and how long will you stay the course why don't you get organized and organize black people to know the real truth of what is happening to us is by design not by accident we are sold out by our congress and black caucus and the office of the president and his henchmen like the A.G. why are we three times more likely to go to prison for something we did not do as opposed to whites or even Hispanics. why is our unemployment the highest in the nation now and when things were good. All of these things are symptomatic of a deeper problem obviously no one has the courage or the guts to put it on the table and stay the course to fight for real civil rights. All of you should know that another amnesty will destroy any chance of low skilled and other forms of employment for blacks in this country yet you are all pushing like hell to push through another slap in the face to the black community which are the ones who are hurt most by illegal migration. you are not stupid just greedy.

Actually is I was the NAACP I would be ticked off. Not at whites but at my president and this administration. They are concentrating on illegals and their rights and throwing you under a buss. It will be harder than ever for blacks now. Blacks belong here, all these others don't. Tell that to your Muslim president.

The NAACP... for the advancement of colored people... decrying the racism of the tea parties. Think about that. And the New Black Panther Party, showing up at the Lincoln Memoral in August to protest the Tea Party's use of that memorial for a rally, because it's an affront to "their president". Such is the upside down crazy world of the "post-racial" Obama administration. Sadly, it's gonna be a LOOOOONG time before this country elects another black president. He had such promise, and he could have truly governed from the center. But he couldn't help himself, so the necessary reversal of fortune is inevitable.

I was raised in the poor section of town and grew up there. The term Racists is used to explain everything. If you wish to get the word of the try RESPONSIBILITY.After all we are responsible for ourselves. The blame game is going nowhere. As they say "IF YOURE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION, YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

Did they want affirmative action to allow for more black people in the Tea Party movement? Look up real Tea Party information; there are plenty of people of color involved.

Every time I watch a Tea Party Rally I ask the same question, "Where are the Blacks at these rallies?" People may not realize it, but every time we have an economic downturn, people want to blame Blacks, Hispanics, and every other minority for their loss of job, income, or whatever. I view the Tea Party to be the modern day KKK.

Check it out, im a Black man and im flat out tired of hearing all the Tea Party being racist lines. People use the "anti-Obama= racist" stance far to often and it will ultimately backfire. Check a few videos on youtube or some site and while the number of Blacks is small that attend the get togethers, there usually are some. Its very unpopular for any Blacks to go against Obama and they fear being labeled an 'Uncle Tom' or 'sellout' and thats more blaltantly racist than anything from the Tea Party.

The majority of the members of the tea party movement are nothing but a bunch of white conservative racists.!

and to answer the questions of why groups like the NAACP exists...read up on your history e.g. Jim Crow laws. If i am not mistaken black people were discriminated against in schools, jobs, obtaining property etc etc.

The Jim Crow laws were state and local laws in the United States enacted between 1876 and 1965. They mandated de jure racial segregation in all public facilities, with a supposedly "separate but equal" status for black Americans. In reality, this led to treatment and accommodations that were usually inferior to those provided for white Americans, systematizing a number of economic, educational and social disadvantages.

If anyone is racist, it's the NAACP. They have such tunnel vision, it's hard to take them seriously anymore. They are as credible as Rev. Jackson or Al Sharpton–both have been laughable for 15 years +.

Do they have any reason to condemn the racism that nobody can find in the tea party movement. Sure there will be a couple loons here and there, but it's no different than any movement.

BTW, have they ever condemned the Black Panthers?

Are there racist people in the Tea party? Yep, there is everywhere unfortunately. HOWEVER... there is far more racist people in the NAACP than in the Tea Party. Stop making everything about race and face the real issued people!
