Boxer holds cash advantage in tight CA race

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/07/15/art.boxer.gi.jpg caption ="Sen. Barbara Boxer holds a significant cash advantage over challenger Carly Fiorina."]Washington (CNN) – Incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, holds a significant cash advantage over Republican challenger Carly Fiorina, according to financial reports released Thursday by both campaigns.

Boxer raised $4.6 million during the second quarter of 2010, and has $11.3 million cash on hand, her campaign said Thursday in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Fiorina campaign said it has $950,000 cash on hand, a deficit it acknowledged.

"There's no denying that we're starting, and will probably continue to be, at a significant cash disadvantage to Boxer: we went through a tough and expensive primary and have only had a few weeks of raising cash for the general while Boxer has been stockpiling funds for 6 years," the campaign said in a release.

The financial report is the first to be filed since Fiorina emerged the winner of a contentious and expensive Republican primary that culminated on June 8.

But, in a sign Republicans are rallying behind their candidate, Fiorina raised a robust $1.4 million dollars in the last six weeks of the 2nd quarter, according to her campaign.

According to the last report filed with the Federal Election Commission, Fiorina brought in $896,833 in the first half of the 2nd quarter, which means the Republican raised a total of $2.28 million in the 2nd quarter, roughly half of Boxer's haul over the same period.

And while Boxer holds a significant cash advantage, other indicators reveal the matchup to be a much closer race.

According to a Field Poll released one week ago, 47 percent of California voters say they support Boxer, with 44 percent saying they back Fiorina, and nine percent undecided. Boxer's three point advantage is within the survey's sampling error.

And on Thursday, the non-partisan Cook Political Report, a well-respected handicapper, moved the race from the "lean Democratic" column into the "toss-up" column.

Fiorina, the ex-CEO of Hewlett Packard, had loaned her own campaign $5.5 million in advance of the primary, but her campaign noted Thursday that she has made no loans since her victory in that contest.

As a displaced Californian, I wish I could move back in time to vote for Senator Boxer. She has worked tirelessly for the people of California and deserves to be re-elected! Better an experienced fighter than a failed CEO!

You should retire and get out you have done nothing but approve every spending we have ever had.

It seems since it's not your money you just don't care.

You don't listen to the majority of voters anyway.

Crly Fiorina is what California and America need to move forward from the awful mess it has made of the Federal government in the last 2 years. Barbara Boxer has shown she will support whatever misguided ideas Harry Reid and Barack Obama dream up. Obviously that has not worked. Carly Fiorina is a brilliant leader and CA is fortunate she has stepped up to represent us in the Senate.

Surely California will vote out the arrogant Boxer. She was a total disgrace when she talked to the General about how hard she had worked to become a senator. Good grief – she doesn't know what work is. Arrogant and condesending!

As well as she ran HP? Let's hope so.

Only in California could the loon Barbara Boxer keep getting elected. The once great state is going down and the elected officials are leading the way including the governor.

If Carly Fiorina helps CA like she helped HP, CA is screwed. So much for her experience.

After people learn what a treasonous witch fiorina is the choice won.t be hard. All Senator Boxer has to do is keep remonding people of how many jobs she shipped to india and china to make her life better at the expense of American families. Shameful at best but more treasonous than anything else.

Here's a clue folks. Carly manages her campaign as well as she did HP; a dismal failure. Do you get that she was FIRED? Is this what we want in CA? I think not. I worked at HP and she was a horrible CEO. At first we were excited because she was a female in a male dominated role, but we quickly learned she was horrible for the company. No business being in politics either.

I'm not thrilled with either one, but Boxer would be the lesser of two evils. Carly, like Meg is clueless and would be dangerous to our state. Simply criticizing the current administration is not a plan to legislate.

To "Four and the Door"....Do you know Carl's history with HP? Do you have experience working for her? I think not. She got fired! How does that qualify her exactly? She is the antithesis of "good for CA". Do you want jobs here or overseas? Enough said.

    Californians really have two choices:
    1) Keep electing lunatics like Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein who will keep you going on the same course right over the cliff or 2) Start electing conservatives throughout the state and save yourselves.

    Four and The Door,

We had what Carly has to offer in this country for 8+ years, and we saw what happened, wars, deficits, lies, outing of CIA agents, wall street running amok, etc etc etc...

Obviously Senator Boxer is no spring chicken, but could CNN chose a picture that is a little bit less un-flattering?

Maybe one where she is smiling at the camera, instead of mid-sentence with her mouth open?
