Boxer holds cash advantage in tight CA race

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/07/15/art.boxer.gi.jpg caption ="Sen. Barbara Boxer holds a significant cash advantage over challenger Carly Fiorina."]Washington (CNN) – Incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, holds a significant cash advantage over Republican challenger Carly Fiorina, according to financial reports released Thursday by both campaigns.

Boxer raised $4.6 million during the second quarter of 2010, and has $11.3 million cash on hand, her campaign said Thursday in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Fiorina campaign said it has $950,000 cash on hand, a deficit it acknowledged.

"There's no denying that we're starting, and will probably continue to be, at a significant cash disadvantage to Boxer: we went through a tough and expensive primary and have only had a few weeks of raising cash for the general while Boxer has been stockpiling funds for 6 years," the campaign said in a release.

The financial report is the first to be filed since Fiorina emerged the winner of a contentious and expensive Republican primary that culminated on June 8.

But, in a sign Republicans are rallying behind their candidate, Fiorina raised a robust $1.4 million dollars in the last six weeks of the 2nd quarter, according to her campaign.

According to the last report filed with the Federal Election Commission, Fiorina brought in $896,833 in the first half of the 2nd quarter, which means the Republican raised a total of $2.28 million in the 2nd quarter, roughly half of Boxer's haul over the same period.

And while Boxer holds a significant cash advantage, other indicators reveal the matchup to be a much closer race.

According to a Field Poll released one week ago, 47 percent of California voters say they support Boxer, with 44 percent saying they back Fiorina, and nine percent undecided. Boxer's three point advantage is within the survey's sampling error.

And on Thursday, the non-partisan Cook Political Report, a well-respected handicapper, moved the race from the "lean Democratic" column into the "toss-up" column.

Fiorina, the ex-CEO of Hewlett Packard, had loaned her own campaign $5.5 million in advance of the primary, but her campaign noted Thursday that she has made no loans since her victory in that contest.

Wow, Carly's doing THAT bad? As the Republican candidate, you'd think she'd be the darling of business and they'd be dumping money into her campaign. I guess the business donors are too aware of Carly's background and just don't see her as a good investment. That's the trick with those business donors, they make risk/benefit assessments, and they see donating to a poor risk candidate as a potential waste of money.

She's going to have to convince the polls to give her a reasonable lead before the business donors will start giving to her. Until then, she's going to have to struggle on a shortage of funds.

And all this without Boxer even starting to follow-through on Carly's mistake of running as the ex-CEO of HP. Carly deserves to be rejected just simply on the grounds of her making such a stupid mistake. Carly's record at HP was horrendous. HP employees hated her. HP's board hated her. HP's stockholders hated her. I mean, wow, given all that, why NOT run on your record as HP's ex-CEO!

Why would anyone in California want this woman back????? she hasn't done anything for them. Californians live in an ego bubble. All I see is California bankrupt; loosing their police department which must make criminals very happy; trying to sell Pot to make money. A very troubled, looser State.

    She also has better hair.

Califonians are too smart to be taken in by the GOP on this one.

To "Four and the Door"....Do you know Carl's history with HP? Do you have experience working for her? I think not. She got fired! How does that qualify her exactly?

Yes. No, but several of my good friends do and we have had that discussion. They say great things about her leadership.

Carly was let go because she had a disagreement on strategy with the 'silver spoon heirs' who had board seats. HP's good fortune because of Carly's strategic moves while in the job have proven she was correct.

She is brilliant. They know that now. Yes, that does help justify why she is excellent for the job.

Several comments here about how "arrogant" Senator Boxer was in dealing with the general, including one by a poster who actually knows how to spell arrogant. This guy wasn't just back from Afghanistan, he's the head of the Army Corps of Engineers and was being called on the carpet by the Senate committee because of the Corps' slow response to repairing the damage from Hurricane Katrina. Generals get b*tch-slapped by Senators in committee hearings all the time for less. I met Senator Boxer when she spoke to my workers group. She was friendly, respectful, knowledgeable, and obviously takes her job very seriously. Of course when a conservative woman is tough she's a "mama grizzly," but a Liberal woman is "uppity."

After Carly was ousted at HP, the last thing I want to see her do is hold the corner office in California.

It's not the spending, stupid........it's the last eight years of disastrous republican policies. And, you want that back? I think NOT.

I guess Ms. Fiorini handles her war chest the same as she did HP. She could do what Whitman is doing – trying to buy the seat. But it won't work. I'm from California and will NOT vote Republican. GO BOXER!

Boxer is the best senator for California. She is the best senator for Americans. Carly, is for Carly and the very wealthy and most know it. And, she is a loser as an executive.

Boxer: "ts Senator! I worked real hard for that title." She is really classy. We all got a kick out of that in the military.

As a Californian, I have never found reason to not trust Barbara Boxer.. Until we voted in a movie star for Governor I thought we were doing pretty well but he changed that situation. If there is any question in my mind about the upcoming election , it would be about Fiorinas very bad record with HP. I don't think we want someone who has such a background.I'm going to go with the known instead of the unknown and vote for Boxer.

Votiong for BOxer is proof positive that Calif vote Dem regardless if a stuffed animal was on the ballat. Boxer was an incopmetent person as SF Mayor the SF Chapter of NOW refused to endorse her. It is amazing how you all contime to state Bush's 8 years, when the Dems ran the show from 2006. You can thank Barney "I'm in love with Countywide" Franks and Chris "got a sweatheart loan" Dodd for the financial crisis. Time for arragant Boxer to go

Why would any body in their right mind vote for Fiorina?

She can't hold down a job, doesn't vote and hasn't a clue about the average citizen.

Sen. Boxer on the other hand is good for the people of California and has been an example to the rest of us.

RNC or some GOP candidate outraises opponent = GOPers crawling like ants all over teh comment section claiming it's proof from on high that the entirety of Amurika has rejected the Dem's ideas and proposals and wants them all out of office.

DNC or some Dem canditate outraises opponent = "Carly by a knockout."

"Carly was let go because she had a disagreement on strategy with the 'silver spoon heirs' who had board seats."

Right...wiretapping the Board's conference room is a "disagreement" just like waterboarding someone is an "interrogation technique."

This is one life-long Democrat who will vote for my son's leopard gecko before I would vote for Boxer. Boxer's arrogance and lack of intellect and accomplishment has become an embarassment to this state. Put Senator Feinstein next to Boxer and you have a beacon (Feinstein) standing next to a 25 watt light bulb.

I have worked for a congressman full time and I have worked for Cisco which is pretty similar to the HP environment. There is no comparison. Working in the private IT sector is a heck of a lot harder and expectations much higher so trashing Fiorina when she worked her way all the way up the ladder at HP as a woman is way out of bounds. WAKE UP morons.

Fiorina is just another failed businesswomen who thinks that business experience translates over to government experience.

    Apples and oranges.

If I need surgery I go to a medical doctor I don't get to a vetrinarian.

Besides, just look at our current Governor, The Gropinator, and that arguement shows that it's a failed arguement!

Senator Boxer has the interests of us average working Californians at heart!
