Schwarzenegger orders National Guard troops to Mexico border

(CNN) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered a temporary deployment Friday of National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.

The order reflects President Barack Obama's efforts to secure the border, Schwarzenegger's office said.

Last month, the governor praised Obama's proposal to deploy 1,200 National Guard personnel along the southwest border of the U.S. Of those troops, 224 would be deployed in California for up to one year.

"The military forces deployed in support of this request will not be employed in a direct law enforcement role," Schwarzenegger's order said. The mission is scheduled to end on June 30, 2011.

It's not the first time Schwarzenegger issued a general order directing California National Guard personnel to the border. In June 2006, the governor sent troops temporarily to support federal efforts to secure the border.

Schwarzenegger's office has said the governor believes more Border Patrol agents are needed to reduce illegal border crossings, human trafficking and the influx of narcotics.

    Good start.

NOW– fine the people offering the illegals job and you might come closer to balancing your budgets (hire legals that pay state taxes–are NOT paid in cash by the wealthy and corporations-have their own health care instead of being on the "dole").

This must be that 2 weeks out of the year of active time the reservists are required to do. Been there done that, and from a point of view of someone who was sent to Twentynine Palms and Yuma (two of the hottest places in the US during the summer), I feel for the National Guardsmen and women who will be in that oven for the next two weeks.

I can just see that formation this afternoon when they fall in:

"Soldiers, our orders to go to the mild weathered San Diego are changed. For the next two weeks we are going to be in the desert guarding the border"

and then the long groan from the formation...

    "SON OF A ******, AGHHHHH"

...even we the Marines did it, it's OK, they are allowed one groan a year.

Actually the Republicans just don't get it. Obama has done more to beef up the border security than Bush ever did. Where were you wingnuts back when Bush was out promoting amnesty and meeting with Republican lobbyists whom wanted him to promote using immigrants for cheap labor? Don't be ignorant of the facts.

Maybe somebody woke up and realized that Arizona isn't so wrong. Why has is taken so long to realize that border control affects our national security?

Come on Arnold... A whooping 224 National Guard performing desk roles and fixing vehicles does NOTHING to address the problem. This is just more BS snoke and mirrors from politicians to make it look like they are doing something when in actuality all they are doing is trying to fool the American people. Problem is we have seen all this BS before and don't buy it SO STOP TRYING TO SELL IT TO US AS A SOLUTION!!

Arizona Governor always had the authority to place the National Guard at the boarder. They put human rights below political again with no regards to the constitution.

So the governor dosn't have the power to call up the guard without the Presidents approval? Seems like they should, and terror being what it is today seems like the Presidents number would be more like 12 Thousand. the same way states have travel centers why not boarder centers and even military bases on the boarders...

Institute a draft and put 300,000 new recruits into training for military service – DO THE TRAINING ALONG THE BORDER. Also gives them training for jobs, facilitates identifying and recruiting good potential military personnel, and takes those people out of the job market. This will also discourage illegals and lead to capture for return many of these lawbreakers. At the same time, we should move to permit illegals who are already integrated into American life to remain and become citizens. They cheated, but we didn't stop them, so they'll get away with cheating. But that's what we do with wall streeters and politicians, so why single out illegal immigrants? After all, life isn't fair. Stop new illegals from coming, and let those who are here already stay, unless they have been convicted of a crime.

We need to restart deep water drilling but require a relief well to be drilled at the same time as the main so that wells can be killed within days, not months. JOBS x 2.
