Officials: National Guard troops headed to border next month

(CNN) - The United States will deploy 1,200 National Guard troops to assist with border protection starting August 1, the Obama administration announced Monday.

In addition, approximately 300 additional Customs and Border Protection agents will be added and will be complemented by an increase in technology and six aircraft, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Alan Bersin said Monday at a joint press conference with the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security.

Officials had previously announced the troop deployment, but a date for it had not been given.

Hmm...that's about three months before the November elections.
    Nice, cost-effective timing.

Isn't that a mistake? Won't the GOP just say, "look, look, Obama's driving up the 'deficit?" He's all "spend, spend, spend!" Don't do it President Obama, don't fall for the GOP tricks.

Silent raids of companies employing illegal immigrants, more deportations that the previous administration and increased security at the border. Now, we just need people on both sides of the aisle to grow a pair and get comprehensive immigration reform done in a way that follows our laws and is compassionate to the families we have allowed to stay here for decades so they could mow our lawns, pick our strawberries and nanny our children!

Sorry Barack, but sending Natl Guard troops to the border won't help you much. Most of the illegal aliens in our country are here on expired visas. If you really want to crack down, try more workplace raids and raise fines for businesses that hire illegals.

OMG!!!! Obama must not like "undocumented" folks for Mexico. i.e., Democrats don't want their votes!!!!!

    How can this be??????

Look everybody. Obama is slamming the door shut on the border, and must dislike "undocumented" immigrants!!!!!!

  9. rules of engagement

Ironically and incedibly, the rules of engagement for the National Guard in AZ will be more liberal and flexible than what is in place n Afghanistan, which only means that if an illegal fires on our AZ troops from a desert hillside, the troops can fire back without having to first see the enemy position, identify the enemy who fired, and confirm that there are no civilians nearby.

Nothing but paper pushers that will do nothing to enhance border security. If Obama really wanted to do something meaningful put thousands of troops down there with orders to shoot to kill or at least armed with the knowledge that the federal government will back them up if they get in trouble.Right now he looks like a little weak Jimmy Carter.

If Obama really wants to help the folks at the border he would be sending at least 5 to 6 thousands. Like I said, if he really wanted to help the folks at the border.

No Jerry, Hope isn't a plan, but Health Insurance Reform, Fair Pay (Lilly Ledbetter Act), Financial Reform, repealing DADT, increased investment on renewable energy jobs here in the great U S of A, ending the war in Iraq, finally doing what is needed to "win" the war in Afghanistan so our troops can get out of there some day and comprehensive immigration reform is a plan! We HOPE he continues to move forward on this plan! God Bless America!

The previous administration could have done at least one of these, but there was far too much brush to clear in Crawford those 8 years.

I see this as a gesture to appease the right wingnuts claiming there is an increase in violence when all evidence says there has not been. Understand that because of our laws the national guard cannot act as a police force. We are already stretched thin enough responding and training for natural and manmade disasters not to mention two wars to be utilized in this manner

Who cares , once they cross and enter the country ICE will NOT deport them – unless we DEPORT them when caught it doesn't mean a THING

1200 troops will not make a dent in the flow of illegals. This is just another lame attempt by Obama to fix a serious problem.

  18. Bill

Lets see, 1200 National guard troops divided by four border states equals 300 troops for each state, then you have three eight hour shifts.
So now we are down to 100 troops per shift. that is stretching it pretty thin because some of those troops will be administrative and not on patrol. And, what about weekends, are these people expected to work seven days a week without a break?
Get real, this is pure obama stupidity. Face it folks, he is a COLOSSIL GEM OF STUPIDITY.

Most of what is done is political by Obama and this is just one more example. That few of troops is not going to help as this is just a move to assuage opponents of his love for open borders.

A couple weeks ago President Obama said

"our borders are safer than they have ever been"

So which is it "fearless leader"?

If they ARE safer than ever, why the additional troops? If they are NOT safer than ever, why lie to the American public?

  22. Whatever

I love that from 2000-2008 immigration and the borders were not an issue. Under the Bush administration border patrol agents were sent to prision for doing their J O B – guarding the border. We should also protect the NORTHERN borders too!!! Everyone is so busy watching the Southern borders. The 9/11 bombers didn't come in from the South. God bless our President and the United States of America!!!

Okay: one of the problems of having a minority president in a racist society.

Mr. President: i presume that you know quite well that illegal immigration is at a 35-year low and the Border Patrol is already at its highest level ever in terms of manpower and technology. There are problem areas that could and should be reinforced. That could probably be done within the ranks of the Border Patrol itself, which now numbers in the 20,000-agent area.

Don't let the screamers and race-baiters dictate government policy (and expenditure) because of your own minority status. 1,200 National Guard? Most of your critics on this question really aren't interested in the actual issue of immigration anyway.

Analyze carefully, do your job, and let them complain! That's what you were elected to do.

Where is the President going to get thousands more troops? It's good he is sending any because I frankly find the notion border security an oxymoron because even fascist states have holes in their borders.

Useless political move pandering to idiots. Troops are useless on the border. we need more border patrol, but Congress won't appropriate the money, they'd rather give more subsidies to the oil companies like Exxon and BP. Or cut taxes on the rich again.

Besides, Mexico loves being able to send its useless mouths North. Let us deal with them. We should force Mexico to change its policies and grow a real economy. The laugh at us.
