Poll: D.C. gives Obama highest marks, Wyoming lowest

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/07/19/art.getty.obama.seal.jpg caption="President Obama enjoys a high approval rating in the District of Columbia, but is not doing as well in Wyoming."]Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama is getting rave reviews in the District of Colombia and Hawaii, but he's not playing as well in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and West Virginia, according to newly released national poll numbers.

A Gallup survey released Monday indicates that during the first half of 2010, 85 percent of residents in the District of Columbia approved of the job Obama was doing as president, with 68 percent of Hawaiians giving him a thumbs up.

Democrats overwhelmingly dominate in Washington D.C. and they also greatly outnumber Republicans in Hawaii, the state where Obama spent much of his childhood and teenaged years.

Besides Illinois, where Obama lived for decades before moving to the nation's capital, states from the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions round out the top ten for Obama's popularity.

According to the poll, only 29 percent of Wyoming residents approve of how the president's handling his duties in the White House, followed by Utah, Idaho and West Virginia at 34 percent.

These survey's results are based on aggregated data from Gallup Daily tracking polls conducted January through June of this year, with more than 90,000 adults questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus one percentage point.

Democrats are undoubtedly the dumbest creatures ever to roam the earth. How could anyone, in good faith, say that Obama is doing a good job? He has failed at EVERYTHING. But, that's another reason why people point and snicker at democrats.

People in the DC area are more in tune to the political scene on a whole, we see everything up close & personal. The GOP is out of tune big time with the majority of Americans, the Virginians I know have been embarrassed with the recently elected Republicans. The Washington Post tried to warn them about Cucinelli, shoud've listened!!

I am not surprise that Obama would have low marks in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, and West Virginia. It speaks to the character of the bigots and racist that lives there.

The high approval is DC is no surprise because of the high minority population and expansion of the government under Obama.

    Diane P,

Seeing the political scene up close isn't a good thing. I'm from PA but now live in the DC suburbs and have the impression that most people in DC are out of touch with the rest of the country. It's almost like they live in a bubble.

It's amazing how people turn a blind eye to all the mistakes this administration is making.

From an electoral college perspective, there are some interesting states on that map. Even in a period where Democrats have been almost constantly under pressure and the GOP is supposedly having a revival, Obama is still competitive in all the swing states, plus Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, NCarolina, Virginia, and SDakota. I know the poll isn't a voting indicator, but it's still interesting.

Given that the majority of people in DC are either government workers or get paid by the government, no surprise here.

"The high approval is DC is no surprise because of the high minority population and expansion of the government under Obama."

So only minorities voted for and approve of Obama?

The GOPers are the greediest, most self-centered creatures to roam the earth. I mean, if we are calling a spade a spade, Rickster.

DC the most out of touch place in the country naturally would give our inept President the highest marks. He makes Bush seem more like a Rhode scholar every day instead of a simple Harvard MBA – haha.

Rethuglicans want Obama to fail so they constantly vote NO to anything and everything he proposes. But in spite of their hateful negativity, he has succeeded in getting quite a bit of very serious legislation passed–Perhaps not laws that the Rethugs want, but still what is best for America at this point in time . He is doing fine and things will continue to improve. I have faith in his abilities. Just because the Rethugs fuehrer Rush Limpbag wants him to fail, all the Limbots repeat the same thing and hope that if they keep hating him, he will fail. Not going to happen. The man who taught Constitutional law knows what our Constitution is all about and will make sure it never gets trampled on again like it was under the Bush/Cheney years.

All of those who are saying that the minority rate in DC is what is giving Pres. Obama high marks are hypocrites. When the statistic that DC had the highest literacy rates for any other city in the country came out, they immediately said it was because of all the educated whites that live in the District. You can't have it both ways.

@ JonDie: Bush Bush Bush...is that all you lefties can say. Obama has been the POTUS for almost 2 years and the dems have been running Congress for almost 4 years...blame Bush but the last two years in office he was a lame duck since the dems did exactly what the republicans are doing now to Obama saying NO!

How quickly we forget.....Can you name one thing of substanant value that Obama has done without controversy that he and his party has succeeded in? Remember even if the Repubs said No...the dems for most of the 2 years had a majority...One thing??? Anybody!!

People in DC and Hawaii are not going through the bad financial times that those in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, W. Virginia are going through so of course they're going to think everyone else is doing financially well. Hawaiians never leave Hawaii, they're on the other side of the world, what would they know about our country. I doubt those in DC have any interest knowing about Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, maybe they have some interest in W. Virginia.
