NAACP 'snookered' over video of former USDA employee

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) - The NAACP has retracted its original statement condemning comments made by a former Agriculture Department official who resigned after a video clip surfaced of her discussing a white farmer.

The NAACP said in a statement Tuesday that it was "snookered by Fox News" and conservative website publisher Andrew Breitbart.

"Having reviewed the full tape by Shirley Sherrod, who is the woman who was fired by the Department of Agriculture, and most importantly heard the testimony of the white farmers mentioned in this story, we now believe that the organization that edited the documents did so with the intention of deceiving millions of Americans," the statement from NAACP President Benjamin Jealous said.

Save your apology, everyone is so quick to condemn without fully researching the facts. Whatever is shown on Youtube MUST be true is some people's mentality.

there is a way for the NAACP to clarify the issue.Just realease the full unedited version of the tape for people to judge for themselves. Otherwise, this is an organization that's blowing smoke !!!!.

Republicans and tea partiers like to stick Obama with the bogus "Hitler" label, but the vile thing that Andrew Breitbart has done is exactly what Joseph Goebbels did during the third Reich. Despite their campaign slogan, the Republican party has NEVER been about "Country First". Sherrod is a decent person who did not deserve this kind of treatment.

Good, looks like Obama's off the cuff comments, without knowing all the facts, has once again gotten him in trouble. I'd say he acted stupidly.

Great lesson for the NAACP! Now perhaps instead of rushing to judgment and being so reactive to the "right wing nuts", they will take the time to investigate all the information and then make precise and intelligent decisions. Most importantly shame on them for even trusting the information from FOX news about anything and anyone of color.

All the lies and made-up garbage and no credibility has finally caught up to FOX. They have now proven to everyone what worthless liars they are. They should lose their FCC license or not be able to call themselves a "news" org. They are not. They are a sorry lying Republican propaganda machine. They are as slimey and shameful as the GOP.
FOX finally got caught for the garbage they are.

I truly think everyone really jumped the gun with this. I was especially disappointed that the NAACP issued their statement before even viewing the tape and giving Ms. Sherrod the benifit of the doubt first. It seems everyone did this woman a major injustice. I am truly saddened by everyone involved in railroading this woman, including the administration.

I don't see why this woman was so quickly fired by the Obama administration, accusing her to be racist. Meanwhile, President Obama has never admit that the Tea Party is a racist movement despite all the graphic facts.
I am not sure if President Obama really worry about hurting some of his potential voters.

Phone records will show who and where the calls to Shirley Sherrod came from. Is that public record?

This particular matter highlights the issues with 24/7 Media. Especially when a number of Media channels/commentators are clearly, politically, very biased.
They claim to be reporters and newsmen and quote out of context words and ideas, and are not in any way penalised by an industry that insists on monitoring its own integrity... in this case what integrity. It meets zero journalistic ethics and standards.
So first, the lady should be re-instated,and if not sue for wrongfull dismissal which while sad will be necessary since she will not be re-instated.
Next the reviews I saw totally miss the point. The NAACP were hooked as they were trying to prove that they unlike the tea party express were prepared to castigate/ denounce an NAACP speaker for racist comments in content, without checking first. 24/7 media wanted an instant response!!
The right wing have played Gotcha and moved the racism debate away from the Tea partiers to the NAACP and the government ( USDA) I see no satisfactory evidence of actual White House involvement and the lady at USDA I guess was simply using that to increase the pressure on her to resign.
The truth and reporting with integrity are more important than being the first media to know or tell us.

Andrew Breitbart is scum, but all parties should be ashamed of their actions against Sherrod. She told a truly uplifting story about her realization that she must fight for all poor people, no matter their race.

Thank God my cable company refuses to carry Fox cable news here in Canada,.. it seems so many Americans tune in to their garbage. Isn't it time to put that odious media outlet out of business?... Pressure the sponsors to pull their ads, until they stop spreading so much disinformation, lies and deception.

That's the NAACP's problem along with LULAC and others'. They don't care to find out what the real story is. They just react to get their divisive faces in front of the camera. The same can be said about how the NAACP has reacted to the Tea Party. It's too bad that anybody gets caught up in the body count as these organizations go on slashing and burning.

If you actually watch the video she says that she learned that race doesn't matter but in the begging she thought it did.
I love how counter groups take words out of peoples and make things sound totally different then what they mean.

Yes, the NAACP was snookered, which is what Andrew Breitbart And Fox News wanted to happen in the first place...this isnt any more real than the fictional stores we were told about the death panels and free abortions that took place during the health care debate...the right wing is trying to return to power and enact its agenda of an 18th century class society where the desperate poor and working class toil for long hours under sweatshop conditions, and a ruling class tells them how greedy they are for asking for a little more...we dont need to backslide back to those miserable days...keep exposing the radical right wing lies and smear attempts!!!

Just another ploy by the NAACP to attack the right. The NAACP plays is a major role in Racism in America. There are two sets of rules in America. Rules for white people which are followed and rules for blacks which are what ever they want them to be. Then of course we have the illegals that now want their set of rules. I am sick and tired of this racist crap coming from Shabazz, Obama, the NAACP, etc. What else can anyone be but racist from their comments and treatment. Ship them all to Africa. They can't act like a civilized-human being in America.
