Congressional Black Caucus releases statement on Sherrod firing

Washington (CNN) - The Congressional Black Caucus released the following statement today on the firing of USDA employee Shirley Sherrod:‬

‪“It is troubling that Shirley Sherrod was asked for her resignation as Georgia State Director for Rural Development at the U.S. Department of Agriculture because of an edited video clip. A full review of the clip demonstrates Ms. Sherrod’s personal transformation. She was clearly educating the public about the power of redemption. It is now apparent that Secretary Vilsack did not have all of the facts available to him and overreacted.‬

‪“The Congressional Black Caucus continues to believe that Ms. Sherrod was unfairly asked to resign, without due process and should be reinstated immediately. There are many individuals still serving in the Department of Agriculture who were responsible for years of discrimination against African American farmers.‬

‪“We also believe that a national dialogue on race must be held. Last November, we held a forum on race in Washington DC to begin the discussion. The basis for Ms. Sherrod’s resignation is another example of why we must not sweep race under the rug. Rather, we must come together as a nation and recognize that we do not live in a post-racial era and that while difficult, we must confront these issues head on with clarity and without fear.‬

‪“Ms. Sherrod has been an effective public servant and it would be tragic to lose a person of such caliber, competence and commitment to fairness and equality and one who has dedicated her life to working for a more perfect union.”‬

Nothing new from the Obama admin.....Shoot, Ready, Aim is how this Admin reacts to every situation. When emotions run every decision you make this is what happens-facts never get in the way of an Obama decision. One and Done!

FIRST: The WH needs to STOP worrying about BECK and the Conservative Media who are out to destroy them!!!

SECOND: The idiot who posted the story in the first place is a racist trying to prove another organization is racist and another is not. His intentions were CLEAR and he knew what he was doing. He had access to the FULL TAPE and still posted a LIE!!!

THIRD: ONLY the ignorant could have fallen for the SNIPPET!! I heard the snippet and from the TONE of Sherrod's voice – it was very obvious she was making a comparison to something else – Something else that was 'deliberately' cut from millions of people watching!!!!!

I was called the N-Word because of my license plates and bumber sticker OBAMA 08 – RACE EXIST IN THIS COUNTRY AND WILL CONTINUE TO EXISTS UNTIL ALMOST ALL OF WHO IS LIVING – DIES!! I teach my kids and grandkids NOT to be racist and they get along with the opposite color better than the elders... SHAME ON US!

  3. Washington has failed us

'We must come together as a nation and recognize that we do not live in a post-racial era and that while difficult, we must confront these issues head on with clarity and without fear."

This from a group that in truth has done much to spread fear and discourage clarity about racial issues in this country. Race in this country has become an issue of skin 'thickness' than skin color...... ‬

Thank you CBC and NAACP for speaking up. There is a lot of anger out here and unfortunately African Americans are being treated worse than ever now. There is definately no "Post Racial America". Particularly in certain age groups. The over 40 crowd is having some real problems with having an African American President and many of us are catching it, as a result... Like I said, there's a lot of anger out here. Lot's more than many of us expected...

This entire episode demonstrates the extent of the mendacity inherent in the current Conservative movement and, especially, among its key spokespoeple and opiniomakers, starting with the Fox News and its commentators.

Has anyone on FOX apologize yet? And its still sickens me that idiots on the "other" side still believes that Miss Sherrod and the audience that listened to her were racist. Did they not hear the audience clap when she said its not about the color its about those who have and those who have not. Her story was about not judging but looking beyond color and seeing the situation and still helping. It sad to see that those who hate will still hate after the truth of this story has been cleared.

I hope she tells the USDA to pound salt. Another case of "shoot first, ask questions later" and "guilty until proven innocent". When this country returns to the proper procedures concerning such issues, and stops knee-jerk reacting to media blurbs and political posturing, maybe we'll return to greatness.

I also wish this fine woman all the best in her future endeavors. There was a lesson to be learned in her story, but this was not it, and I applaud her efforts to get people to stop being so hateful. God bless you, Ma'am.

Isn't it funny how all the liberals can experience "personal transformation" and be suddenly cleansed. But the very same people demonize others (ie. conservatives, opponents) FOREVER no matter what they do. They love to use race against their opponents like a sword.

As they say... Live by the sword, die by the sword.

  10. Amazed @ the duplicitousness

The most amazing thing about this is.....

This White House/Democrats forced her to resign. The only thing that was reported on was a video clip where she explained she acted in a racist manor (by not doing all she could for the white farmer) and how she realized she was wrong and learned from it.

It was reported on to point out the duplicitiousness of Liberals/Democrats. I didnt hear one Republican/Conservative say she should be fired.

I as a Conservative agree with her and respect her admitting a past wrong.....

However...... if it was a Republican/Conservative who mad the excat same admission as Ms. Sherrod........ they would have been crucified.......

    The double standard never ceases.......

I agree...but if you'll be honest, if the situation were reversed it'd be enough that it HAPPENED, if someone later changed their way of thinking people would still believe they should be fired (white employee/black farmer), no matter that they later 'changed their mind'. Also upsetting is the laughter of the audience.

This should be a lesson learned that even main street media outlets(FOX) , will edit videos without regard of the harn it does . Lies are lies and we need to do out homework .
The amount of false emails I have received with the most ridulous claims is appalling . They count on peoples gullibility!
We need some sort of regulations and accountibility for the internet and news media.
Deliberate false editing should be regulated and made to pay libility.

It looks as if we got caught up in a set-up, courtesy of Faux News. I think that the WH in an effort to appear non-biased towards African-Americans may have in this instance overreacted at Ms. Sherrod's expense.

This situation is directly results from the evil-minded ( Beck, Rush, et al) fanning the flames of divisiveness, even if they have to reach back 24 years to do so. This WH is 'baited' constant and relentlessly with Faux news and innuendoes. I am surprised that more of these types of knee-jerk reactions have NOT occurred.

I hope proper amends are made to Ms. Sherrod.

White, Black, Green or Purple it is unfortunate that someone would butcher or edit a clip to prove a point with NO regards of how it will effect the person's life.....Fox News should be investigated

What really needs to be addressed is the underhanded manufactured so called news that Fox and the right wing blowhards are pedaling. There has got to be a way these people could be held accountable for the messes they cause.

The FCC was so so so quick to come down on Janet Jackson at the CBS fiasco but they let creeps like Breitbart edit tapes, pedal lies thru the worst piece off trash to ever be allowed on the air F-O-X.

I think when a cable show pretending to be news whether it is or not tells or puts forth such lies, they should be called in front of a committee and made to give proof why they don't have their license pulled, and that goes for the trash spewed forth on radio. I think the LIES SHOULD STOP NO MATTER WHO KEEPS SPEWING THEM.

It is apparent that the Congressional Back Caucus didn't even listen to what she said when the story first came to light. She said it was the W. H. that told her to resign immediately.Mr.Vilsack may not have had all the information but where was the NAACP and the W.H. officals in all of this?

I hope Ms Sherrod finds a way to sue Brietbart and Fox news for spreading the lies and edited tapes. It's past time that these wanna be journalist are made to pay for the lies they spread regarding innocent people. Fox is not a news outlet, it's a right wing propaganda machine.

Let me make sure I understand this correctly.....the Obama Administration and the NAACP demand this woman's resignation without having fully viewed the video tape. Now, because of their incompetence, they are "reviewing" their decision.

This is eerily similar to Eric Holder's admission in front of a congressional panel that he was going to sue Arizona over the immigration law that he had not read.

And these idiots are running the country…..into the ground.

anyone who's surprised that a conservative talk-radio host twisted reality (i.e. edited a video tape) to fit their own agenda, please stand on your head.

glenn beck did the same thing before the presidential election trying to discredit Public Allies and whipping up fear that they were going to be a paramilitary group sent forth by obama.

Please quit kowtowing to these lying "conservatives" with a wicked agenda. Get all of the facts first and fight back against the Beck-Fox propaganda.

Ms. Sherrod was framing the compassion of her position to successfully HELP the farmer, which right-wing propaganda machine shamelessly took out of context. She deserves her job back.
