Romney to endorse Handel in Georgia runoff

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/07/21/art.handel.file6.handel.jpg caption ="Karen Handel on Wednesday picked up the support of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, CNN has learned."] (CNN) - A day after advancing to Georgia's Republican gubernatorial runoff as the favorite to win the nomination, Karen Handel picked up the support of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, CNN has learned.

"A successful businesswoman and public servant, Karen Handel's blend of executive, political, and business experience is just what Georgia needs at this critical time," Romney said in a statement Wednesday. "The leadership skills that she has honed in both the private and public sectors will enable her to make tough decisions and enact the reforms needed to get the economy back on track and foster job creation."

Handel and Rep. Nathan Deal emerged from a four-way primary battle and will now face off in the Aug. 10 runoff. Handel was boosted in the primary by endorsements from Sarah Palin and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer. Deal is backed by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who represented Georgia's sixth congressional district for two decades.

Romney stayed out of the primary, an aide said, because one of the candidates, state Sen. Eric Johnson, had backed Romney during his 2008 presidential bid.

But Romney has been generous with his money in the Peach State this year. His Free and Strong America political action committee has contributed $39,000 to an eye-popping 42 candidates up and down the Georgia ballot so far in 2010, including Sen. Johnny Isakson and Reps. Phil Gingrey, Lynn Westmoreland, Jack Kingston and Tom Price.

Romney's PAC donated to $1,000 to Handel's campaign on Tuesday.

The eventual GOP nominee will face former Gov. Roy Barnes in the general election.

Romney is sure a loyal guy. He stayed out of the primary because one of his supporters was in it. Does he have any idea how hard it was for southerners to get behind him when he ran two years ago?

Georgia is doomed if another incompetent republican sit in the Governor's seat. The botox Palin doll (Handel) need to find another hobby. Enough already! When I'm told a candidate is a "former business executive" I become very concerned because money, power and connections RULE! May I add in MOST cases.

I'm tired of the lame rhetoric from republicans about the business people types. Fiorinna and Whitman were both failures as businesswomen and yet they have the audacity to run for public office. Look at our last POTUS. His business savviness drove this economy into a ditch.

He's pushing Karl Rove's agenda this year.

Typical secretive underhanded bunch of people. Ashamed of what they do, but they do it anyway.

VOTE NO to the party of NO.

Romney, another loser that like Palin, will do anything to keep his name in the news

So far I like what I have heard from Handel. Deal seems a bit too much like a career insider for my taste. Also, Sonny and Mitt like her. She got my vote yesterday and will, most likely again..

Looks likes Mitt Romney forgot that Sarah Palin endorsed Handel. This alone could cost him any chance at the White House in 2010. This is surprising, most Americans know that whoever Palin endorses, vote or endorse the other one!

Pure and simple....with that list of supporters, this woman is clearly not getting my vote! Haven't heard any solutions from her yet; just like the rest of the GOP; no substance here.

Romney and Palin's support of Handel, VERY REASON TO VOTE FOR ROY BARNES IN NOVEMBER!

I am a GA resident and I can tell you that in my opinion if this lady wins the republican nomination then we can all but sure guarantee a victory by the democrats in November. Her extreme views are so out in left field that you have to wonder how did she get to this point.

I am afraid that republicans are going for all of the extreme candidates thinking that this is what MOST americans want when in reality it is only a small but rather LOUD percentage of the republican party. I would love to say that all democrats will win in November but I also understand that we need a difference in opinion to come up with the best solutions. Too much of one thing is not always good.

However, as a democrat, I wish her all the luck in the world and hopes she wins the runoff because beating her in November is all but a given.

Romney stayed out of the Georgia primary because Romney is a douche bag. He waits to endorse someone when they are clearly the obvious winner.

That is not leadership, that cowardly behavior. He is not willing to put himself on the line for anyone but himself and he will sell Americans out too if it is in his best interest.

Sounds like a cut and paste from the Bush administration.....the 'pro business' administration stacked with business people....who drove the economy right into the ground

Bwahahahahaha! Mitt Romney is just playing safe which boat is unsinkable....a typical character of a traditional and conventional poltical leader with no guts and no balls between his legs. if Romney will be the 2012 GOP nominee, Obama can sleep well during eve of 2012 POTUS election. :-))
