Facebook investigating deletion of Palin post

Washington (CNN) – Social networking giant Facebook said Thursday that it is investigating the deletion of a post by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin that sounded off about plans for a mosque near Ground Zero in New York City.

Facebook is looking into "this incident to determine why and how the content in question was removed," spokesman Andrew Noyes said in a statement provided to CNN.

Later: Facebook sorry for Palin post snafu

Palin re-posted the Facebook "note" Thursday morning. In the re-posted version, Palin responds to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg who was, in turn, responding to earlier comments by Palin about the planned mosque.

"No one is disputing that America stands for – and should stand for – religious tolerance. It is a foundation of our republic," Palin writes in the re-posted version of her Facebook note.

"This is not an issue of religious tolerance but of common moral sense. To build a mosque at Ground Zero is a stab in the heart of the families of the innocent victims of those horrific attacks."

Palin added, "Many Americans, myself included, feel it would be an intolerable and tragic mistake to allow such a project sponsored by such an individual to go forward on such hallowed ground. This is nothing close to 'religious intolerance,' it's just common decency."

The re-posted note ends by informing readers: "The original post of this statement (on July 20, 2010) was somehow unintentionally deleted by mistake or technical glitch."

Facebook allows users to report violations of the site's terms of service, including content which users believe is racist or hate speech.

Although Facebook has yet to complete its investigation of the original post's deletion, Noyes said that the site strives to balance being a platform for dialogue and a respectful environment.

"We want Facebook to be a place where people can openly discuss issues and express their views while respecting the rights and feelings of others," Noyes said in another statement to CNN. "The goal of our policies is to strike a very delicate balance between giving people the freedom to express their opinions and viewpoints – even those that may be controversial to some – and maintaining a safe and trusted environment."

I can't believe that all of you are arguing about invisible men who purportedly live in the sky, and have the ability to see into the future, trying to convince one another that your invisble man is the authentic one.

Common decency? After listening to this person and her hate-mongering spew for the last couple of years, I'd say she couldn't spell decency if someone were to spot her the first 5 letters.

As to her post on Face Book – I don't agree with it being depleted (it seems to be the only communication tool she can begin to understand) – but I do understand that some more soul probably just couldn't stomach any more...

    July 22, 2010 01:22 pm at 1:22 pm |

Facebook has been around for a couple of years now. I propose that Palin did not even know about it until 2008.

When Palin speaks, the country listens. No point in trying to censure her. She will always win.

Palin was against building a mosque near ground zero? Is she not aware that Muslim citizens were killed there also? This woman belts out low class rhetoric about taking our country back; yet, she truly has little knowledge of what our country stands for.

Did anyone object to a christian church being built within blocks of the Oklamoma Federal Building after Christian, Tim McVeigh blew it up killing hundreds of Americans??? I didn't think so!! All Muslims are not terrorist , this is America people – you know the land of the free, free of religious persecution and bigotry – what moral code does building a learning and prayer center violate Ms. Palin??

Why does anyone care what Palin puts on her facebook page? It's a social networking site, not a political forum. Sarah, get a real political platform where people can challenge you face to face. Quit hiding behind your friends on facebook where you can pick and choose!

So she lies about the location of the mosque and believes religious freedom only applies to hateful christers like her family.
