Facebook investigating deletion of Palin post

Washington (CNN) – Social networking giant Facebook said Thursday that it is investigating the deletion of a post by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin that sounded off about plans for a mosque near Ground Zero in New York City.

Facebook is looking into "this incident to determine why and how the content in question was removed," spokesman Andrew Noyes said in a statement provided to CNN.

Later: Facebook sorry for Palin post snafu

Palin re-posted the Facebook "note" Thursday morning. In the re-posted version, Palin responds to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg who was, in turn, responding to earlier comments by Palin about the planned mosque.

"No one is disputing that America stands for – and should stand for – religious tolerance. It is a foundation of our republic," Palin writes in the re-posted version of her Facebook note.

"This is not an issue of religious tolerance but of common moral sense. To build a mosque at Ground Zero is a stab in the heart of the families of the innocent victims of those horrific attacks."

Palin added, "Many Americans, myself included, feel it would be an intolerable and tragic mistake to allow such a project sponsored by such an individual to go forward on such hallowed ground. This is nothing close to 'religious intolerance,' it's just common decency."

The re-posted note ends by informing readers: "The original post of this statement (on July 20, 2010) was somehow unintentionally deleted by mistake or technical glitch."

Facebook allows users to report violations of the site's terms of service, including content which users believe is racist or hate speech.

Although Facebook has yet to complete its investigation of the original post's deletion, Noyes said that the site strives to balance being a platform for dialogue and a respectful environment.

"We want Facebook to be a place where people can openly discuss issues and express their views while respecting the rights and feelings of others," Noyes said in another statement to CNN. "The goal of our policies is to strike a very delicate balance between giving people the freedom to express their opinions and viewpoints – even those that may be controversial to some – and maintaining a safe and trusted environment."

First of all it is not planned to be at ground zero but several blocks away. How far away does it have to be? Second of all by saying that it cannot be there because it is of Islamic nature and would be insulting to the families of the innocent victims is in itself insulting to the innocent victims who practiced Islam. Using this same logic there shouldn't be any Christian churches in the middle east because of the crusades.

Seems the imbecile is more than happy to heap praise on NYC when it's convenient for her politically. But when she was on the campaign trail she bashed big cities every chance she could get, referring to rural America as "the real america".

    This woman makes me sick.

Theres this little thing on the site that lets you report hate speech (a violation of the terms of use) Just a thought but that might be related to the posts deletion.

Maybe the person who actually posts for Palin removed it.

She probably deleted it herself so she could get more coverage of her sticking her nose in other states' business again.

    What a moron.

Does this STUPID woman think that only non-Muslims were killed that day? Can she look beyond her on ineptness and really, just for ONCE....THINK!!!!!!! I am so SICK of her and HER opinions. She does not represent me or my thoughts. I am so SICK of this totally inept Barbie Doll (no disrespect intended to Barbie). It took her six different schools to finally come up with a degree in journalism and then she talks AGAINST journalist. She can't finish a sentence much less an elected term of office. STOP GIVING HER A PLATFORM...STOP REPORTING WHAT SHE SAYS.

    CNN stop repeating the garbage!

  11. Joe from CT, not Lieberman

Has this woman ever met a Muslim? I doubt it. Before 9/11 I had the opportunity to take a business trip to the Middle East (Jordan and Dubai). One of the questions I was commonly asked when folks found out I was an American was "Why does your country hate us so much?" I am not saying this justifies what happened that day, but think about it. Since the 1950s we have backed a country that has bullied its way into occupied territories based on a notion of what territory it believes it held 3000 years ago, and have backed a number of monarchies because they control the oil of those nations and do (or did) little to help their people. We have refused to force these countries to accept political reform because some of the parties running for office really don't like us – wow, that's a stretch considering how we pander to the very governments they try to oppose. "Why does your country hate us?"

How? I mean, we all you what you're implying, so just say it.

Palin wouldn't recognize "common decency" if it bit her in the butt. Move on. Though I don't support a mosque in that location either, she's not the spoke's person for most of us. Her impression of herself as the "moral highground" is laughable at best.

What a shame it was deleted. I hang on every pearl that drops from her ruby lips, NOT. She has a right to spew her hatred like anyone else, and I have to right not to listen to it, but not the right to delete it.

They have a right to put a Mosque wherever they want. But you have to question their thinking when they put it by Ground 0. It's like they want to cause a controversy. For a pacifistic organization, I am surprised by their intent.

What business does a washed up Governor from Alaska has putting her noise into New York City business. Butt out.

    July 22, 2010 02:12 pm at 2:12 pm |

So Palin is saying that we are blaming all muslims for 9/11?

Please. This is another gut-reaction by conservative fools that can't see the big picture.

You can't have freedom of religion and make statements like this. The families are smart enough to know it wasn't an entire religion that killed their loved ones. She is making this about religion.

And Newt: We are BETTER than those countries that don't allow churches...so we do not stoop to their level. Get it?

We all know Sarah can't think let alone write. She has "people" to decide what her position is on every issue, post comments on facebook, etc.

There are several reasons why the staff who monitor Facebook comments might have taken down Sarah Palin's post on the mosque near the 9/11 area.
    1. Too stupid to have been written by a non-minor.
    2. Extremely defamatory, in that it suggests that its own author is an idiot.
    3. The comment was most likely spam from a Palin enemy trying to make her look bad.
    4. Patently offensive

  22. Take America Back

It is absolutely amazing to me that every time something is mentioned concerning Sarah Palin, the same "Palin Haters" hit this site with ruthless and nasty remarks. I am curious.....are you guys being paid by the Liberal Dems, or some other Obambi leaning group? Of course you will respond that you are simply "concerned citizens". Why are you so afraid of her? May I ask you, is it because; she is pro-life, or because she loves her family, God and country? Or is it because she is "down -to-earth" and relates so well to real main-stream America? Me thinks it is because all of you know the only way to send the first black president in history packing is with a charismatic and conservative female...(not bad on the eyes either)?
I would like to meet some of you.....just to see if you're real or not.....Me also thinks you are part of the now exposed group of left wingers who have banned together to smear Sarah Palin......who are you? ..... Who ever your are, it isn't working! Why don't you give it a rest and stop showing your true characters as well as your ignorance.

Hey Simple Sara – it is an American value – "freedom of religion"
Which also means freedom from your (ass-backward) religion.

Why don't all you religious bigots go to a country that doesn't have freedom of religion so you can be intolerant and happy – pick a 'stan, any 'stan ...... and just go.

  24. Former Republican, but never again!

There's NO WAY that Palin personally wrote this post. There's no Yoda-speak and it's semi-intelligent. For her to state that she wrote it and that it is her post, is a LIE!

So now we know that Caribou Barbie actually reads SOMETHING. Facebook and Twitter. That's a hell of a statement about someone who thinks she's qualified to lead the free world. Sarah's posting of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address:
