Williams resigns as Tea Party Express spokesman

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/06/19/art.mwilliams0619.gi.jpg caption ="Mark Williams has resigned as the spokesman of the Tea Party Express."] Washington (CNN) – Tea Party Express spokesman and former chairman Mark Williams has resigned his post, the group said Friday in a statement.

Last week Williams penned an inflammatory blog post that erupted into a national controversy and fueled debate about the Tea Party movement and racism. Williams later defended the post as satire.

"The media coverage over a recent satirical posting on my personal MarkTalk.com blog risks injuring the Tea Party Express, the tea party movement as a whole, and the people in this movement who I respect and admire so much," Williams said in resignation letter released Friday. "It has become increasingly unacceptable that the media and our domestic enemies continue to anoint me as the official voice of a massively diverse and broad-based movement."

Williams wrote the incendiary blog post in response to an NAACP resolution that called on Tea Party leaders to crack down on racist elements in the movement.

"Dear Mr. Lincoln," began the fictional letter posted by Williams. "We Coloreds have taken a vote and decided that we don't cotton to that whole emancipation thing. Freedom means having to work for real, think for ourselves, and take consequences along with the rewards. That is just far too much to ask of us Colored People and we demand that it stop!"

Williams went on to write that the Tea Party movement couldn't be racist because it opposed government bailouts for Wall Street banks and big corporations.

"Bailouts are just big money welfare and isn't that what we want all Coloreds to strive for?" the posting said. "What kind of racist would want to end big money welfare? What they need to do is start handing the bailouts directly to us coloreds!"

The National Tea Party Federation, an organization that seeks to represent the Tea Party political movement around the country, expelled Williams and his Tea Party Express organization because of the post Sunday.

In his letter of resignation, Williams said he will continue to advocate for Tea Party issues, but will no longer be associated with the Tea Party Express because his association with the group has become a liability.

"We are in a war for the future of this country and the Left and their allies in the news media have decided to use my personal comments and views as a weapon to injure the Tea Party movement and conservative activists. I will simply not allow them to do this," Williams said.

Williams resigned as chairman of the group in June.

wow, lets discuss this on every cnn show for the next 2 weeks. This is bigger than the awful race baiting video at the naacp about a week ago by dem.sheila jackson lee-texas, which we will never see and discuss ad nauseum on every cnn show. stop race baiting,it hurts america. by the way, i thought the democrats had all the issues on there side. Why not debate the new healtcare bill? Why not debate whether the obama's economics are good for the u.s? why not debate, raising taxes(the current tax policy), or letting the bush taxes expire. Why not debate, whether adding billions of dollars to the deficit, without paying for it,is good?(by the way, obama said it was good to pay for it and fiscally responsible thing to do,in november, the last time we extended unemployment). Race baiting by the naacp, and promoted by cnn is dishonest

I think this is a win for Republicans. More people will be likely to side with the party without the extream hatred.

Interesting that you can post comments here about the Tea Party (or Sarah Palin always) but not about Barack Obama.

Wow.......... the TP may be self-destructing. Tea Party not racist? Ha! Has anyone paid attention? Have you not read their protest signs?

What's really disturbing is that the TPers would be calling the Liberals un-American or worse IF we have had signs like that against Bush!

Interesting, Williams and Sherrod did nearly the same thing. Both were ouusted, yet Sherrod gets apologies. I hope Obam has the guts to apologize to Williams as well.

  17. Really???

The news media used his words as a 'weapon'? Unless those words could hurt your cause, the media making them public should not be an issue. Williams made them a weapon by showing his personal feelings as a racist – they were only a weapon when that fact reflected poorly on the Tea Klux Klan. For him, facts are the 'domestic enenmies' he is referring to.

"our domestic enemies"... this guy needs a reality check, we are all Americans, even the "anti-american" liberals like myself are still Americans. people like this guy do not need a platform to spread their craziness.

It is unfortunate that he continues to use inflamitory language which in the end will do much more harm than good. "Domestic enemies", "We are in a war", "a weapon to injure" do nothing except incite fear and violence. Too many of the right wing "patriots" believe this stuff and then will feign surprise when someone starts shooting. Sometimes freedom of speech is pretty ugly.

He is JUST now resigning? Republicans are so corrupt and untrustworthy. I am appalled they are trying to put the slimeball Breitwaite as the victim! This conserative hate spewer edited Sherrod's speech to an unrecognizable version of what she really said.
Of course FOX and Sean Hannity were more than willing to put a false and doctored story on the air and pretend it was true. Where is the apology from Hannity and from FOX management?? They created this situation and many others just like it. They are not a "news" organization and have no "journalistic integrity". You can't trust anything coming from Fox.
This is NOT the fault of the WH or the NAACP. This was an intentional slandering and character assassination of Shirley Sherrod to get back at the NAACP for calling the tea baggers "racist" (which is absolutely 100% accurate).
Is this the type of characterless, dishonorable, lying leadership you want in our government? This is how Republicans operate on a daily basis. They don't care who they hurt, the total lack of integrity and honor they display, and intentional lying – as long as it gets them 3 minutes of "gotcha" media time. That is NOT leadership.
It's time to show the Republicans we are sick to death of their do-nothing, anti-American, anti-People arrogant attitudes and actions.

NO votes for the Party of NO, hate, lies, racism and "let them eat cake" policies for working families. Let's rid our Congress of this hate mongers and vote NO on all Republicans in NOvember.

Rethugs dumping the ballast so they can drive the ship to what they believe will be "Victory" in November. The Nuts, having brought them this far, are now being thrown over the side. Palin and Bachmann better put on their life jackets.

Sometimes it hurts to have pointed out the folly of your ways. Don't expect to live on the public dime and not have the public get sick of it. Lets all be equals and work for what we eat. That goes for everyone, not just blacks. You are responsible for yourself, don't ask me to pay your way because your great great grandpa was a slave. Can anybody please tell me what is so hard to understand about personal responsibility? If you want something, work towards it and earn it for yourself. Unless what you want is for everybody else to pull your weight. Then just kill yourself because you are worthless. Sadly that means about half of this country needs to commit suicide.
