Rendell says View may not be appropriate for Obama

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/07/27/art.obama.theview.07a.abc.jpg caption =" Barack Obama appeared on ‘The View’ in 2008, as a Democratic candidate for president."](CNN) – President Obama is taking some flak from a fellow Democrat over his plans to appear on daytime gabfest The View later this week.

Speaking on MSNBC's Morning Joe, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell suggested the ABC talk-show - which often directs its focus on tabloid stories and celebrity mishaps - may not be an appropriate forum for a sitting President of the United States.

"I think the president should be accessible, should answer questions that aren't pre-screened, but I think there should be a little bit of dignity to the presidency," Rendell said. (Video via Matt Lewis at Politics Daily)

Rendell, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, also likened The View to the Jerry Springer Show – the famed program that has long spotlighted dysfunctional family situations.

"I think there are some shows - I wouldn't put him on Jerry Springer either," said Rendell.
"It is different a little bit. But I think the President of the United States has to go on serious shows."

But Rendell, who will leave the governor's office at the end of the year, conceded The View will provide Obama with a good opportunity to go off the teleprompter – something Rendell says the president should do more often.

"If I was advising President Obama, I'd say do as much ad hoc as you can do," he said. "He doesn't have to scripted, he doesn't have to be telepromptered."

Obama will sit down with The View cohosts for a pre-taped interview Wednesday, the first sitting president to appear on a daytime talk show. The segment is scheduled to air Thursday.

Obama appeared on the program in 2008 when he was a presidential candidate and Vice President Joe Biden was a guest last April.

Thank You Governor Rendell, You've Just Made One Of My Many Points. However, It's The Presidents Decision Even Though I Personally Think That The View (Loose Lips Incorporated) Doesn't Deserve It.

Finally, Gov Rendell, a democratic Gov and former mayor of Philadelphia, saying what has been so evident about Obama's less than presidential decorum. Trying to be "one of the boys" is not garnering the respect of world leaders!

I am so happy that he has everything under control that he can find time to break from his campaigning to do The View. Its awesome to see the laser focus of his fixed unemployment, our border security, the gulf, Lockerbie bomber, ethics investigations and that little thing the economy.

It's 2010, Ed! Times are a changin'. That's what's wrong with the political parties these days. Maybe the President can stiflle Elizabeth once and for all time.

Lighten up Rendell. The View is a chatfest that has a big, big, big audience. As for it being like Jerry Springer, not so much. The View has a variety of topics and opinions. I think it is the perfect place for Obama to start some dialogue.

Ahh Ed, the view is a joke but it is a much more serious outlet than the hate filled lie at all costs lib socialist MSNBC.

Besides Obama wants to talk to those who voted for him, he already did Oprah so the next outlets would be the View and Judge Judy, followed by the Jersey Shore.

I dont understand why he will go on shows like "The View" but will not come on Fox News. Fox News is a real news broadcast, not a news that worships Obama. I'd like to see Obama sit down with Glenn Beck without pre-screened questions.

I don't see why this is a problem. It's NOT the Jerry Springer show, and they do often discuss news and current events on this show. So, why is it a big deal?

What is the President doing on the View? Man, if he thinks his poll numbers are going to go up he's mistaken. He needs to get a better message out, but this is not the way.

I agree. He's still on the campaign trail–and he needs to be. He needs all the safe havens he can find! And if he does appear on Thursday, I think Sean Hannity should also be there to support Elizabeth.

Amen. He has enough time to appear on "The View"? Sorry to say, I was excited for him to be President, but I think he's on his way out in 2012.

Appropriate??? Neither was BIll Clinton saying he wears boxers. Your point is? The Presidency is not the same office as it used to be. People that were in the White House used to have some class. Teh military teaches a person how to act.

i didnt see on the political ticker about john kerry's half million tax evasion. It is even on msnbc. Of course, the headline is spinning for him.as most in the lamestream media do. Kerry has his yacht docked in maine,so, he doesnt have to pay the 1/2 million higher tax bill ,in his OWN state, mass. What a tool!! CNN couldnt find this story, though.I guess it had nothing to do with race baiting.

Rendell says – "I think there should be a little bit of dignity to the presidency..."

That dignity was destroyed long ago under Reagan and Bush. The last 8 years of Republican rule was like living in a Jerry Springer episode. The View seems absolutely academic in comparison.

For once I agree with Rendell. Appearing on gossip shows is a disgrace to the Oval Office.

Rendell needs his head examined. Comments like this only fuel Republicans as they point out & encourage infighting in the Democratic party. KEEP YOUR PIE HOLE SHUT Rendell! Obama is reaching out to everyday Americans to help them understand the complicated issues that plague this nation and to cut through the BS spin that the Right is spewing on a daily basis.

If Ed Rendell thinks The View is comparable to Jerry Springer, it just indicates that he's never watched either show! People who don't know what they're talking about should keep their mouths shut. Why is that so hard for someone like Rendell to understand?

And, for God's sake, will Democrats ever stop tearing each other down in public? Not only is Rendell wrong, he should keep his negative comments to himself, since Obama's appearance is not a big enough deal either way to merit comment from all the party bigwigs.

Although I dislike all things Republican, you've got to hand it to them when it comes to loyalty to their leadership. That would be the day that one of them would publicly criticize their party leaders for something this inconsequential. They don't even criticize each other when they're selling the country down the river, as they do just about every day and twice on Sundays!

Rendell needs to get a life and shut up about things about which he obviously knows nothing!

Hopefully he will not appear on The View and mercifully spare America one more media/Obama slobber-fest.

President Obama is definitely wasting valuable time. This country is in the midst of a war, economic despair, and he's chattering with celebrities that can't help. What's the point of this exercise. Sir, your time would be more wisely spent, meeting with the political parties in Congress, attempting to get struggling working families a stimulus boost. Amazingly, the TARP money was given because America's financial institutions were too big to fail. Well this country will fail because of the ignoring of it's people. However, our President will go down as always being accessible, even for the View. Yet, most Democrats, continue to make excuses for the President. We expect the President of the United States to lead, making talk shows of little importance is not leadership, Sir. Oh, by the way, I'm a Black man.
