Magazine: Bristol Palin, Levi Johnston engagement called off ... again

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption ="Bristol Palin has ended her engagement to Levi Johnston, People Magazine reported."]

(CNN) – Bristol Palin has called off her engagement to Levi Johnston, People Magazine reported Tuesday.

"It's over. I broke up with him," Bristol Palin told People Magazine. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told the magazine her daughter has learned a valuable lesson: "to trust but verify."

Last month, Bristol and Johnston became reengaged without first informing Sarah Palin.

At the time, the Palin family issued a statement that stopped short of a full-throated endorsement.

And in her statement to People Magazine published Tuesday, Sarah Palin made her wishes for Bristol known.

"I wish for Bristol to be able to move forward in life with her same forgiving, gracious, optimistic spirit, but from henceforth she'll know to trust but verify. Bristol is strong, she is independent, and she knows what is right for her son," the former vice presidential candidate said.

And as for the reasons, Bristol told People that a trip to Hollywood was the final straw.

"The final straw was him flying to Hollywood for what he told me was to see some hunting show but come to find out it was that music video mocking my family," she said. "He's just obsessed with the limelight and I got played."

In what the magazine calls an emotional interview, Bristol said "There's been no remorse," and that she has only seen Levi once in the past three weeks.

Their teenage relationship fell under an intense public spotlight after Sen. John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate in August 2008. The couple broke off their first engagement about two months after their son's birth in December 2008.

After they broke up, Johnston posed in Playgirl Magazine and said on "The Tyra Banks Show" that they had been allowed to live together, a charge the Palin camp denied.

Johnston irked Sarah Palin last fall by claiming that she referred to her infant son Trig, who has Down syndrome, as "retarded." According to Us Weekly, she fired back, telling reporters that anyone who posed for Playgirl would "say and do anything for even more attention." Later, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she called his "aspiring porn" career "heartbreaking."

During a nasty custody battle last year, Johnston asked that the case be conducted in public to protect him from Sarah Palin, whom he said was "powerful, politically ambitious and has a reputation for being extremely vindictive."

Bristol Palin said in the custody hearing that Johnston wanted a public case so he could "continue to make a spectacle of this custody dispute for his own self-promotion."

Bristol Palin noted in the court case that Johnston's mother, Sherry Johnston, pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge this year.

Bristol Palin asked that the paternal grandmother be barred from having any unsupervised visitation with Tripp. Her petition said she "may re-offend, keep medications around the house which could be accessible to the baby, have illegal drug users come to the house (or she could take the baby in her car during a drug sale)."

Johnston's response said his mother's "chronic pain condition is currently being managed in coordination with the Department of Corrections."

On July 7, Johnston publicly apologized to the Palin family in a statement to People Magazine, saying some of his comments about the family were not totally true.

"Last year, after Bristol and I broke up, I was unhappy and a little angry. Unfortunately, against my better judgment, I publicly said things about the Palins that were not completely true," Johnston told People. "I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah. Since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize."

I was really excited ot see all the "hate filled liberal comments" that the conserva-goons are complaining about. a handful of people are calling them trash. Yawn.
    More thin-skinned conservative mock indignation.

This young couple has a lot to learn. Honesty, Integrity and Forgiveness. The other young woman became pregnant when they were not together. It should not have happened but young women today give themselves too freely, without thinking of the consequences, as do the young men, because of the laws regarding child support, no one is off the hook anymore. Best not to be having babies out of wedlock. Once they are here though, then one needs to make enough money to support them.
Enter greed, and you have the situation of Levi going to California to make money however he can, to support himself, possibly a wife and definetely his children. At that point, greed is center stage - from all accounts, al want their 'fair share' of what-ever he earns.
Best to share with your own children, the pitfalls of having children out of wedlock.

Love how the conservatives turn on the libs when one of their own shows displays poor judgment. Can't you just accept that these people crave the very same media attention they complain about? We don't see any Palins turning down the big bucks to flap their jaws in public, now do we? If you're in the media, accept the love/hate relationship that goes with it or get out. They don't seem to get out.

So much for our lessons in "family values".
Does anyone get the feeling these two are screwing the entire country?
Do you think they offered to pay all the money back to the magazine for their recent photo shoot, or are they laughing all the way to the bank?
Can the media finally let go of this dysfunctional family & concentrate on something meaningful for a change?

CNN, there was a second reason – Levi told Bristol that he may have fathered a child with another girl. The heartache he has put her through is incredible. Thank God she realized just what he is like before she married him. I just wonder what Tripp will think of his father when he realizes what a low-creature Levi is.

There is no business like show business – Bread and circuses while the deficit is trillions of dollars and the unemployment rate is nearly 10%.

It will all be hilarious if this was not a central issue of the current debates of the public's attention.

Seems like the Palin women are the definition of "flaky". The mother quits her job as governor two years into a four year term, and the daughter quits her engagement twice. Nice examples.

The Palins got what they wanted from him; he recanted some of the things he said about them in the past. Once his credibility is shot, they can afford to push him away.

OK – I don't want to laugh because this is the lives of 2 young folks with an infant.... but for crying out loud! If this joke is any indication of sarah's skills as a parent/leader – folks we really did dodge the bullet!

How can the party of NO can continue to rip on the Clintons' for their "standards", etc. , when it is so obvious that they have been the only success parents in the White House since LBJ?

Why is any news outlet wasting time with this juvenile nonsense? The whole family is a bunch of hill billys and this is about as stupid as sending news bullitns out about your neighbor or baby sitter. This should be on Fox not a real news station.

Speaking as a Liberal Democrat it doesn't matter whether or not any of us disagree with Sarah's politics. The article – and the issue – is about Bristol, Levi and their son. I'm sorry that these two kids are continuing to have such trouble and hope only the best for them and their child. They are trying to do the best they can in a very difficult situation and I truly feel for all three of them. We shouldn't be snarky or nasty about the very real heartache and pain in this little family; we should be kind and supportive just as we would hope others would be to our own children should they find themselves in similar circumstances. Come on, the change you want to see in the world. Practice kindness and love instead of cruelty and hate. Offer these kids words of gentle advice instead of using this as a platform for all of your political differences!

    Tough Love!

Why are they not focusing their energy in giving the child the best life can offer?

Stop reporting this sort of junk.

You folks at CNN seem to haven't a clue why you're doing so poorly these days.

    Well here's one for you:

Stop reporting this sort of junk.

Who is Sarah Palin again? Oh yeah, some nobody who quit on the people of her own state, failed at a VP run and currently talks on TV for money... how is this even related to politics anymore?

Bristol, Levi, and Sarah in particular are living off the stupid American public who are paying for magazines with articles about their trashy lifestyle. I, for one, have better things to do with my money than give it to The Sarah Palin and Family Fund.

there's a saying if you "talk the talk, you need to walk the walk". Obviously this family can do the former but fails miserably at the latter (that means the last one, sarah).

Sarah Palin probably threatened Bristol with a complete cut off from her fortune... which is growing. Sarah is an opportunistic, social climbing, ignorant spokesperson for the radical Right in America. She represents only her self and her own self interest. If Bristol were smart, she would get as far away from that woman as possible.

CNN, please remove the cameras from the lives of these two people and focus all that media coverage on people who are actually contributing something to society.

Cannot figure out why she (Bristol) would not have known he (Levi) is a media hound and attention seeker. He has always seemed so with everything he said and much of what he's done. She's young though, and this has been one of those lessons for her.
