Magazine: Bristol Palin, Levi Johnston engagement called off ... again

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption ="Bristol Palin has ended her engagement to Levi Johnston, People Magazine reported."]

(CNN) – Bristol Palin has called off her engagement to Levi Johnston, People Magazine reported Tuesday.

"It's over. I broke up with him," Bristol Palin told People Magazine. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told the magazine her daughter has learned a valuable lesson: "to trust but verify."

Last month, Bristol and Johnston became reengaged without first informing Sarah Palin.

At the time, the Palin family issued a statement that stopped short of a full-throated endorsement.

And in her statement to People Magazine published Tuesday, Sarah Palin made her wishes for Bristol known.

"I wish for Bristol to be able to move forward in life with her same forgiving, gracious, optimistic spirit, but from henceforth she'll know to trust but verify. Bristol is strong, she is independent, and she knows what is right for her son," the former vice presidential candidate said.

And as for the reasons, Bristol told People that a trip to Hollywood was the final straw.

"The final straw was him flying to Hollywood for what he told me was to see some hunting show but come to find out it was that music video mocking my family," she said. "He's just obsessed with the limelight and I got played."

In what the magazine calls an emotional interview, Bristol said "There's been no remorse," and that she has only seen Levi once in the past three weeks.

Their teenage relationship fell under an intense public spotlight after Sen. John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate in August 2008. The couple broke off their first engagement about two months after their son's birth in December 2008.

After they broke up, Johnston posed in Playgirl Magazine and said on "The Tyra Banks Show" that they had been allowed to live together, a charge the Palin camp denied.

Johnston irked Sarah Palin last fall by claiming that she referred to her infant son Trig, who has Down syndrome, as "retarded." According to Us Weekly, she fired back, telling reporters that anyone who posed for Playgirl would "say and do anything for even more attention." Later, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she called his "aspiring porn" career "heartbreaking."

During a nasty custody battle last year, Johnston asked that the case be conducted in public to protect him from Sarah Palin, whom he said was "powerful, politically ambitious and has a reputation for being extremely vindictive."

Bristol Palin said in the custody hearing that Johnston wanted a public case so he could "continue to make a spectacle of this custody dispute for his own self-promotion."

Bristol Palin noted in the court case that Johnston's mother, Sherry Johnston, pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge this year.

Bristol Palin asked that the paternal grandmother be barred from having any unsupervised visitation with Tripp. Her petition said she "may re-offend, keep medications around the house which could be accessible to the baby, have illegal drug users come to the house (or she could take the baby in her car during a drug sale)."

Johnston's response said his mother's "chronic pain condition is currently being managed in coordination with the Department of Corrections."

On July 7, Johnston publicly apologized to the Palin family in a statement to People Magazine, saying some of his comments about the family were not totally true.

"Last year, after Bristol and I broke up, I was unhappy and a little angry. Unfortunately, against my better judgment, I publicly said things about the Palins that were not completely true," Johnston told People. "I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah. Since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize."

She is a teenager, mistakes happen, this isnt about party politics. You all should get lives and stop harassing a 19 year old mother who has to go through a very tough struggle publicly. Its not about Sarah Palin its about Bristol, Levi, and their son.

Well, everyone got what they wanted, right? Bristol and Levi got to split the check from People magazine (should last them a month or two), Caribou Barbie got to quote Reagan and continue her unhinged fantasy of being a republican president ("and the crowd goes wild"), they all got another 10 minutes of fame, and we Democrats got another good laugh followed by a reminder of that no matter how disgusted we are by the idiots Jon and Kate Gosselin, it CAN get even worse.

Bristol continues to be under the influence of her mom, no doubt. Bristol and Levi made a mistake before but were rewarded with the nice child. I don't think they could clearly see what was in store for them. In some years the young people may get a proper perspective of the situation. Let's hope both of the parents are still in their son's life. Seeing Levi on TV and hearing him comment, he is just a young guy who has to find himself. He is not evil. He just needs to get an education.

This is all for show and money-all the "interviews" are for dollars.
As an Alaskan, I can assure you that this family is an embarrassment to all that call Alaska home. The term "Pailin Palin" can be applied to both mother and daughter.

Didn't a bunch of conservative commentators brag that Bristol and Levi were "doing the right thing" by getting engaged in the first place and use that as an example of how strong Sarah Palin's family values were?

Why does NO ONE mention that Half Gov Palin was foisted on the lower 48 from the Nutter Center just outside of Dayton, OH? I'm not making this up!! Google it: the Nutter Center. Talk about foreshadowing...

Is "to trust, but to verify", actually the same thing as trusting? And by "verify", does this mean she has PI's running around behind Todd all the time? Surely Todd knows this as we havent seen his name in the tabloids w another woman "verified" yet. I wouldn't let Sarah take care of my dog, let alone my country, but I do believe these kids should stay out of the public eye, and Bristol honey,, grow some COJONES and learn how to talk to your mom instead of using a magazine to do it for ya!!

Clearly a case of the apple not falling far from the tree. This young lady is exhibiting the same bevioral stability and logic that she learned or inherited from her mom.

Bristol learned her lessons in life quite well already. As they say, "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", right?? Every magazine article that is written about her and her child or Johnson, will garner her MONEY$$$$$$!!!!! Like her MOTHER, it's all about the $$$$$!!!! Her mother boldly quit being the Alaskan Governor, so I'm sure Sara's "kids" have decided they can just BAIL OUT OF ANY OF LIFE'S CHALLENGES OR SITUATIONS whenever they want to!! In the meantime, Sara Palin, the PROPHET OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, is challenging GOD with each and every word she speaks!! I wonder if GOD's dictionary includes the word "cajonne"????????

Thought experiment – imagine that Barack and Michelle had a teenage daughter who was pregnant like Bristol Palin, and who was off-and-on with a guy like Levi, only he was Black.

Is there even the slightest chance that the Obamas would not be vilified over and over by the conservative media? Is there even a tiny chance that a Black politician whose daughter was an unwed teenage mother would have had a shot at winning a national election?

They need to just stop; is anyone really surprised by this? Levi was a tool for Sarah et al. during the campaign to make her "right wing, Christian Conservative" values schtick seem real, what with her unwed teen daugther standing there all pregnant for the world to see (i.e., "well, they're ENGAGED...") and now it's just the fallout for these two misguided young people in the aftermath of mama P's fame and fortune. It reminds me of that little Falcon child, who was allegedly missing, but then found in the balloon that his parents sent up, as some stunt. When Wolf Blitzer asked the little boy why he did it, he responded "You (to his father) said to do it for the show..." This is the soap opera du the moment and Bristol was never going to marry Levi–keeps the Palin pack in the limellight, for all the wrong reasons...but wait, were there ever

Yeah Bristol, trust and verify that your Mother didn't have anything to do with this. Wake up Bristol and learn that politics is a dirty business, even if its your own family. Why would you break up with him before finding out if he really is the father of the child. It could all be one big lie. DNA is a powerful thing.

White trash family values at their best. Can you imagine these people living in the White house? National whose your baby daddy day, moose burgers and Pabst at state dinners and seal clubbing on the south lawn. Run, Sarah, Run!

I'm trying to think of something nice to say about Bristol's intelligence and this is all I can come up with: at least there's one person who's dumber in the world – Levi. Levi, dude, two girls? Like, all you'll be doing for the next 25 years will be paying palimony. Duh!

But, Dems, in the middle of your gloating (coexist!) please remember that the silliness of the Palins is not going to save you politically. You are a train wreck and the Palin comedy of errors doesn't change that. Ho ho ho!
