Specifically, the Obama administration has said it wants the United States to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020, which would mean increasing the percentage of young adults in the United States who earn higher education degrees from 40 percent to 60 percent, administration officials said.
In other words, the U.S. would need to add more than 10 million college graduates over the next 10 years.
Education is the key to our success. Sadly, some companies have job openings right now, but they can't find people with the education and skills to fill them. That should never happen in this country!
Good luck with that, this country has already been dumbed down so badly that there are people that think republicans really represent them and not the rich.hahaha
thats it? that should have been a goal decades and decades ago.
It's great to have a president who was a good student, worked his way through college and didn't have to rely on his father's presidential influence with the colleges to keep them from tossing him out because of poor performance.
Yes, I'm for higher education goals 100%....Dumb & uneducated is what got us where we are today...We have been left behind..It's time we catch up...
Republicans don't want higher education for our country..That would be like "cutting their own throats"
I wish he wouldn't, as his Secretary of Education is one of those who advocate toward testing as the salvation of the school system. It is the wrong message and is the one that is ruining the DC schools, as well as many schools nationwide. It would be much better to advocate for more parental control of schools – from principals, to teachers to curriculum, than jumping on the "test well, or else" bandwagon – which is simply yet another tool of centralization under the administrator.
Ramping up the number of college grads will be a challenge and a half. It will have to start with far better high school discipline, improved study habits, skilled teachers, and parent involvement.
The high schools, for some years, have been sending us far too many unprepared students. Their attitude seems to be play now, study later if at all.
We, as a norm, watch as 1/3 of the students drop out for a variety of reasons, 2/3 of the students change their "major", and 25% flunk out.
What can be done - It must begin in grade school. Students should not be allowed into high school unless they can read, write, handle basic math, and have been trained in proper study habits.
Next - High Schools should "sort out" the students into two distinct groups. Group One - Those with a real interest and aptitude for advanced learning. Group Two - Those with an interest in Vocations not requiring college (plumbing, automotive repair etc.). These students should spend half a day learning a vocation and half a day studying very basic math, reading, writing, civics, parenting, history, creative reasoning, and household finance. In other words, skip the subjects that they will NEVER use in life. We teach far too many subjects that have no real-world use by the blue collar students..
As for myself, I see nothing but 'goodness' in the article and President Obama's goal regarding higher education over the next decade. However, when it comes time for Congress to legislate. The GOP-Tea Party will obstruct, add poison amendments, proclaim that Obama is a marxist-socialist (re: increasing of pell grant), proclaim that this is adding to the deficit (re: $60 Billion spending) and filibuster when the bill is nearly through Congress. The end result, the middle class will suffer and have to turn towards religion for relief. Only the GOP-Tea Party elite will be able to afford higher education. The middle class will in general be less intelectually inclined and thus be more vulnerable to transend into 'true conservative'-Limbaugh/Beck Ideologies. Yep, I can see it coming. For what it's worth, that's my opinion and what my crystal ball says.
If you belive this , think again. His big GOLD < is to get the Key's to Fort Knox , an turn over the proceed to the Muslims , for his Gold is to show the world , when they said many years ago , the USA will betaken over an not one shot being fired . With what is going on , Taking the Bibles away from our Service Personal , not saluting , when National Anthem is being played, Taking Gods name out of everything, Having them cover the Cross, an cover a picture of Jesus . How can we trust this muslim , his higher thoughts are for the mulims , An to top it off he has not attended a church in DC, UH HUH HUSSIEN , belive him , an there is another around the corner.
I wish the parents of those who voted for him had higher education goals for their children.
There are a number of things that would help people get people ready for college - better study habits and preparation in high school. That means that parents and teachers need to be more interactive with the students in high school. Parents also need to encourage their kids to be responsible during their college years as well.
Quite frankly, I wish he'd just focus on the economy and ways to create jobs and growth. I know there's not much he can do about it but it should at least make it appear as if it's his number 1 priority above all else.
Teach them not to be democrats.
That is simple, just lower the standards. With lower standards people can get a college degree without much work and effort. They would not have to learn anything. Of course the college degree would become worthless.
How the hell are you going to push higher education in college when the budgets of the schools are being slashed like the tires on a cheatin boyfriends truck? The schools in my city are so far behind and are losing teachers left and right because the town can't afford to pay them. Wake up America! They are Dumbing Down our children! Cutting programs, cutting teachers and taking money away from our educational system keeps those childre that are going to be running our country from being able to make choices that allow a smart choice for us all. Education should be on the top of the list so that we can compete in the world against countries that at this point are so far ahead of us its scary! We need to clear out all the old cronies that have forgotten where they came from and see their seats as a retirement program. TERM LIMITS FOR ALL NOT JUST THE PRESIDENT. When you are out you get a small retirement NOT YOUR SAME SALARY. You get limited benefits just like the rest of us. Its time we took our country back to common sense and a time where your word was as good a gold and we all looked out for each other.
Two more years of the Obamatard, and you won't be able to afford college for your children.
If everyone has a college degree, who's going to do the jobs that don't need a college degree? The illegals Obama wants to fast-path to
US citizenship?
Sorry Obama, EVERY PRESIDENT TOUTS EDUCATION.
You can throw all the money you want at education, but it is the responsibility of the individual (student and parent) to actually get a proper education. There are beautiful schools with well paid teachers that have a 30% dropout rate.
I'm glad you're talking about it, but don't do something rash without testing it in various areas (see 'healthcare' reform disaster) . One size fits all doesn't work and might be hard to undo the damage you do to the economy....
Like anything else, except tax cuts for the rich, repugs will tell us we can't afford it. No, wait, it's "Americans know we can't afford it".
Another reason repugs will oppose the measure is that it takes teachers to improve education, and they often are represented by those awful, greedy, Commie UNIONS. repugs will not approve any spending if some money might help UNION workers.
Why not talk about "skilled labor" instead of pushing everyone towards college. Not everyone is college material and all we do is set them up for academic failure. Why not council high school students towards tech schools where they will learn a skill to give them job opportunities and financial security. We need skilled labor! It is time for the people in this country to stop placing college degrees on pedistals and stop looking down their noses at the very people they need. Have you ever seen the charges for a good electrician? I'd say that beats all the college or law students still looking for jobs with college loans to pay back! Support the tech schools and let those students be proud of their achievements.
