Handel concedes in Georgia

Washington (CNN) – Georgia Republicans have a nominee for governor after former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel conceded the GOP primary Wednesday to ex-Rep. Nathan Deal.

While less than 2,500 votes separated the two candidates in this primary runoff election, Handel told Deal late Wednesday morning that she would not request a recount as allowed under state law if the margin remained under one percent. As of Wednesday, the difference between Deal and Handel was 0.4 percent.

The telephone call, brokered by a mutual friend, lasted for about 10-15 minutes and Handel "said she would encourage her supporters to show the same excitement and enthusiasm for Nathan's candidacy as they did for hers," Deal spokesman Brian Robinson told CNN.

Handel, in a prepared statement released by her campaign, said she decided to forgo a challenge because it was important "to rally around Congressman Deal as our nominee in the fight against Roy Barnes.

"Barnes would return Georgia to a past that is best kept in our rearview mirror. We must marshal all of our resources to defeat him."

Roy Barnes is a former governor, who was the clear victor in the July Democratic primary.

The race made national headlines when several potential 2012 Republican presidential candidates weighed in on it. Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney endorsed Handel, while Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich backed Deal.

And the egotistical nutjob Palin fails one is going to vote for these tea bagger extremist candidates. We are not handing our nation over to lunatics who are racists and promote violence. They would probably want to carry guns to Congress. They take them everywhere else.

Good Lord People – wake up – Republicans have done nothing this entire year and cannot tell you one detail on what they would do if elected. They have betrayed us in voting NO on everything to help our nation recover from THEIR mess.

NO REPUBLICANS for the survival of our middle and working class. Republicans will keep destroying our country. Democrats are rebuilding it and we need more of the Party of the People in office to keep America moving forward.

Another tea-bagger bites the dust. You've got to give the tea-baggers a lot of credit for dividing the republican party.

It would appear that Ms. Mamma Grizzley's typical MO of "endorsing" who she thought was the clear winner ... after they had established a strong following among the electorate ... has failed her.

Palin is a yahoo, wanna-be politician. She was wrongly given credit for the success of that Haley woman in South Carolina. I'm not a Republican but I give Mitt Romney props for backing that lady EARLY. Sarah is like too many Republicans, she'd rather steal someone elses good idea than have one of her own.

If they were the Party of real, implementable solutions instead of the PARTY of NO ... then maybe clear thinking voters could take them seriously. Right now, we can't.

I am glad to see that someone has the dignity and presence of mind to not delay the results. I truly wish all politicians would be this graceful in defeat (i.e GWB against Gore and the popular vote, hanging chads, etc.)

What do you mean she's not demanding a recount!

Why is she not claiming fraud or that he stole the election?

    this is wrong.....

Oh wait, I forgot she's not a democrat so it could just be that she lost.

Thanks Georgia for electing the right person for the GOP candidate to face Roy Barnes. More of you must get out and VOTE. We cannot have a repeat of Roy. Talk to teachers from his reign, citizens who loved and were devoted to our history and our flag. No Roy we have not forgotten.

Handel may have been alright except that Half Gov. Palin stepped in and killed her chances of winning. I guess no one told Half Gov. Palin since she obviously doesn't know, that grizzly's eat their young. But in order for Half Gov. Palin to know that she might have to read a book. She has these cutesy sayings but has no idea about what they really mean.

Vote NO in NOvember to the party of NO.

it's going to be funny to see how quickly handel throws her support to Deal. I s he no longer unethical, carrying Washington political baggage.

Maybe she can get her 'buddy' Sarah to declare Deal a Momma Grizzly.
