(CNN) - Louisiana Democratic Rep. Charlie Melancon is out Friday with a biting new ad that attacks incumbent Republican Senator David Vitter's 'sins,' as well as his voting record on women's issues.

The 30-second ad, entitled 'The Worst,' features a woman's voice combined with images of Vitter and his wife leaving a July 2007 press conference where Vitter admitted to having an extramarital affair and contacting an escort service.

The narrator says, "We know how David Vitter handled his serious sin."

"And when Vitter's staffer violently abused his girlfriend, Sen. Vitter let him keep his job working on women's issues," the ad continues as a photo of a woman with chin stitches is shown.

The NRSC issued a response on Friday, calling the ad "another desperate attempt by Charlie Melancon to distract voters from his years in Washington carrying water for Nancy Pelosi and President Obama."

"Louisianians overwhelmingly reject the reckless policies Melancon and his party bosses are ramming down their throats from Washington, and that's why voters will reelect Senator Vitter this November," NRSC spokesman Chris Bond said in a statement.

Both Vitter and Melancon are leading their respective primary races. Louisiana will hold its primaries on August 28.

Vitter is another one of those radical religious rights whose motto is listen to what I say, hear how wonderful I am, but do not do as I do, as it is ok for me but not for you.
Anyone who thinks he is above everyone else, can hide behind the Bible while sinning is a hypocrit of the worst kind.

This is just another example of how the Dummycrats have lost touch with America, they are desperate and will use any means to force their socialist agendy upon our great country!

Umm, he didn't have to go that far. Vitter's record speaks for itself. I hate when they begin personal attacks because everyone has something they'd rather not have exposed. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Is that a directive or a dare? Judging from what I've seen, it's a dare. Cut it out!

  6. You have to mention the diapers!

And how many years of carrying water for Obama could Melancon have been "guilty" of?

Oh, and the "opponents" in the headline is a possessive missing an apostrophe.

If it was the other way around you can bet the repos would be doing it. Looks to me he has brought up some good issues. Vitter is a joke who can't keep it in his pants. Another moral christian I bet he is against abortion too.

vitter (diaper man himself) is a disgrace. His wife should have told him to take a long walk on a short pier a long time ago.
I love it when the party of family values falls from the pulpit. Unfortunately, the same right wing bible thumping public doesn't seem to mind.

Come on guys, David Vitter is NOT a SINNER. If he is a REPUBLICAN he is just a "morally challanged person". How the religious right can continue to support such sleeze is beyond me. Money I guess speaks louder than values.

I believe in legalized prostitution. But at the moment, it is ILLEGAL in Louisiana and this senator admits to it. By being a "John", he broke the law and he's no better than the shirtless dudes on COPS. Why is he still a senator?

While a sin in the eyes of God I remember JFK having sins. I'd rate him a heck of a lot better than any Bush or Nixon! You can govern in sin!

Good. It's time for the Democrats to call out the so-called 'family values' party. They call themselves the 'family values' party, but they don't seem to mind breaking up those families if they are Mexican. Democratic candidates should show them up for the liars they are. The Limbaugh-Beck crowd isn't capable of an independent thought, but the rest of us are.

I'd leave the Senator alone as he is breaking the trend: everybody knows that the Dems are prone to cash transgressions while the Reps are more about flesh. Some exceptions exist, like Mr. Clinton, but he is a centrist.
