Reid breaks with Obama, opposes mosque near Ground Zero

(CNN) - Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid is breaking ranks with President Obama over the issue of the proposed construction of a controversial Islamic center and mosque just blocks away from Ground Zero.

"The First Amendment protects freedom of religion," spokesman Jim Manley said in a statement. "Sen. Reid respects that but thinks that the mosque should be built some place else. If the Republicans are being sincere, they would help us pass this long overdue bill to help the first responders whose health and livelihoods have been devastated because of their bravery on 911, rather than continuing to block this much-needed legislation."

well, obama doesnt really have a choice, since the law allows it to be built there. disapproving would be like violating a right and a bunch of laws :S. besides, i dont see why people think that it's a monument to terrorism, terrorists are not muslims (period) i know a lot of muslims and islam is actually one of the most peace promoting religions out there. it's pretty racist just to say that a muslim might be a terrorist, since terrorists oppose 95% of (the real) islamic rules. people just take the 10% of info they hear on the news and never ask real muslims what they think / what islam really is. I wonder when people will learn to live together regardless of their time. -__-

Reid has finally shown his colors. He is of the old Democratic guard and is just trying to get reelected. I am very disappointed that he would break with Obama on this and this illustrates everything wrong with the party. There is no unity in the Democractic party.

Don't worry Reid is just like Obama and if you dislike what he says wait a day and he will rescind his comments. Being dishonest comes so easily for both men its sickening.

  4. all the news that's fit to omit

ONLY because Harry is in campaign mode is he against this.

Harry, I agree, allow the Republicans to include the NO ILLEGALS amendent that you anti-american Democrats want to KEEP IN, then we have a deal, YOUR party played games and that little liar Weiner got called ON THE LIES.

Your still going to lose Harry BUT the media will ignore this for the most part or simply bury your "hateful ideas".

Will Harry like the OTHER 70 percent of the country that is against the mosque HERE, be labeled a bigot, hater or racist?????

  7. Facts are not fair to the GOP

There are times, that I think Harry is an embarassment. While help for the responders needs to be passed, Harry has to realize that in America, they have a right to build their mosque wherever they want to. He is no better than the low life republicans who want to tear our country down.

so let me get this straight, we do not want the mosque because muslisms attacked the WTC, but we still want to "help" them in the war and have ties with muslims with oil? We keep bringining them to the US by the thousands, but we cannot allow a mosque? Politicians will make every topic a political gain or loss... What a bunch of hipocrits.

Harry Reid has an election to win

    Obama does not

Reid must be hoping to draw votes from some of the racist bigots in his state by suggesting his difference of opinion
