Reid breaks with Obama, opposes mosque near Ground Zero

(CNN) - Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid is breaking ranks with President Obama over the issue of the proposed construction of a controversial Islamic center and mosque just blocks away from Ground Zero.

"The First Amendment protects freedom of religion," spokesman Jim Manley said in a statement. "Sen. Reid respects that but thinks that the mosque should be built some place else. If the Republicans are being sincere, they would help us pass this long overdue bill to help the first responders whose health and livelihoods have been devastated because of their bravery on 911, rather than continuing to block this much-needed legislation."

Like it or not they have the right to build anywhere they please, the President only spoke of their rights as Americans.

Last week I got my first glimpse of the New York Skyline without the World Trade Center. It was like nothing.

I lived in New York most of my life but left before the towers were attacked. I have been afraid to see the island without the towers. I was right. I felt awful; a big hole in my memory, a big hole in Manhattan.

No mosque in downtown New York. Sorry folks, no mosque. There are plans now for a new tower complex. Nothing will compare with the first pair, but I sure don't want to see a new tower taken down, maybe before it's even finished. Some things aren't done. This is one of them.

Obama is not backing it, or supporting it... But, as expected, wannabe Fox (CNN) news is ready to "make news"

What a coward. Harry Reid is one main reasons I left the democratic party for my independence. He is so lame!

Clearly Reid understand that this is not about Freedom of Religion but this is about Muslims being mean-spirited, cruel, insensitive, unfriendly, rude, disrespectful, uncaring towards those 100's of people murdered at Ground Zero, to the victims families, friends, co-workers and to the rest of us, to our country.
Why not build the mosque in another area????? why specifically did they chose such location?????? Because it's a challenge against Americans????? Is it to tell us they can do as they please, they live in the U.S. but are not really of the U.S.?????
To me, it's a slap in our face, they are sticking it to us.

"I'm Harry Reid, the soon-to-be-ex-senator of Nevada, and I approve this message."

Ya know, for Obama being this "great orator" and "amazing fund raiser" and "incredible campaigner," he's certainly a dumb politician. I mean the man has incredibly bad timing and his photo appears in the dictionary next to the entry for "tone deaf."

Your heading is misleading...Reid is not "breaking with Obama". The President stated that Muslims have the RIGHT to build on private property even in near Ground Zero. He did not say that they "should" build or that it was a great idea. He stated also that Ground Zero is hallowed ground.

Quit trying to create/fan a fire.

Reid's trying to save his skin by distancing himself from the Chosen One. This is too funny.

Ummm, how is this breakign with Obama? Obama said legally the Mosque should be allowed, morally it should be located somewhere else.

Why are the right wing constitutional "nuts" not siding with Obama's position? Because they are a bunch of hypocrites. Under the constitution, the government cannot block the building of the mosque -deal with it. While I think it is a poor location, I don't have more money to offer the landowner – maybe you do? What ever happened to "small government" or "get the government our of our business" or "states rights?" Oh, that only involves giving everyone guns and controlling woman's bodies?

This looks like a political move by Sen. Reid, but he is dead wrong! And I'm a democrat.

Reid is Obama's boy in the senate. A vote for Reid is a vote for totalitarian socialism. He is the most corrupt collectivist in congress today. If Navada returns him to the senate, it will say a lot about the average IQ of it's citizens.

As a people, we Americans cannot forget The European Enlightment and the basis of the entire American Experience began with Tolerance and the seperation of church and state. We cannot let the building of a Mosque in proximity to Ground Zero cause us to abdicate the principles of The Founding Fathers and our own Constitution which have set millions of Human Beings free.

Reid needs ot remember who he is and stop playing politics.
No intelligent person can oppose this mosque.
This is a knee-jerk reaction form bigots that can no separate the few from the masses.
We condemn thos that treat Americans basdly based on the action of a few, so why are we will to blame every Muslim for 911?
We don't keep the Japanese out of this country or off of Hawaii, so why should a place of worship come under attack?

Reed is up for election this year so of course he has to pander to the good Christians of Nevada by coming out against the Constitution and opposing the mosque. How sad that Americans don't truly understand that freedom of religion applies to all religions, not just the ones we like.

Once again the Mainstream media gets it wrong. This is not about religious freedom. This is not about tolerance for Islam. This is about respect for wounds that have not healed yet. This is about respect for Americans murdered by RADICAL ISLAMISTS who declared war on this country. I judge people by their behaivor. So far I am not impressed with the media, the Democrat elites or the Muslim community. All I hear is that we are racist, bigoted and have no respect for Islam. I ask, what respect does Islam have for those killed in its name?
What's next? The deamand for a conversion over to Sharia law to show how tolerant our Government is of a Muslim's right to freedom of religion? Will that argument be used to convert this country into an Islamic friendly place? And then what?
