Poll: Muslims have highest Obama approval; Mormons lowest

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/08/25/art.obama.0825g.gi.jpg caption ="A newly released poll shows Muslims have the highest approval rating of President Obama."](CNN) - President Barack Obama gets his highest approval rating among religious groups from Muslims and his lowest from Mormons, according to a newly released national poll.

A Gallup survey indicates that in the first half of this year, 78 percent of Muslims approved of the job the president's doing in the White House, while just 24 percent of Mormons give Obama a thumbs up. According to the poll, the president's approval rating among Protestants and other Christians was 43 percent, it stood at 50 percent for Catholics, 61 percent among Jews, 63 percent for Atheists, Agnostics and those with no religion, and 64 percent for those from other non-Christian religions. The president's approval among all Americans stood at 48 percent.

The survey indicates that Obama has lost 15 points on his overall approval rating from the first half of 2009 to the first half of this year, and that he has lost slightly more ground than average among Mormons and has receded the least among Muslims.

"The differences in Obama's approval ratings across the religious groups included in this analysis have held fairly constant across time, even as Obama's overall rating has fallen by 15 points between the first half of 2009 and the first seven months of this year," says a release by Gallup.

American Muslims have been in the headlines over the past few weeks, thanks to the controversy over a proposal to build an Islamic center, that would include a mosque, near ground zero in New York City. The president has spoken out in support of the legal rights for the Islamic center to be built. But the polling in this survey was conducted before the controversy made national headlines.

The findings of the Gallup poll are based on interviews with more than 275,00 adult Americans conducted as part of Gallup Daily tracking from Jan. 21, 2009, through July 31, 2010. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus one percentage point.

Of course they do! His actions at the Islamic prayer day held in Washington after discontinuing the national day of prayer, $6 million american tax dollars to be spent overseas restoring mosques worldwide, bowing to the muslim kings and our tax dollars paying for the Iman to travel to the middle east. I'd say they love him, This is a president who is highly unqualified to lead a nation.....he continues to be the community organizer working in his "one global government" agenda as supported by the powerful organizations such as the TriLaterals and Bildebergers. Pray to a christian god he is a lame duck come november.

  7. Randolph Carter, I'm no expert, but...

Nice to see his approval rating is still high among rational people who don't believe some invisible sky fairy created the universe 6,000 years ago. Despite what the revisionists will tell you, this country was not founded as a Christian nation. The founding fathers were children of the enlightenment. You guys do know what that was, don't you? Or did the State of Texas edit that out of the history books too? Read what our forefathers actually wrote about organized religion. They were not kind. Have a nice day!

Religion has nothing to do with the performance of the US President.

What matters is how effective he has been in doing what he needs to do for the country, and its citizens, and in that charge, he is failing miserably.

A curious question about our President and his religious affilation. My understanding that when he was younger he renouced being a Muslim or the Muslim religion and took up Christianity. It is my understanding that in the Muslim religious world this is the biggest crime against their religion that there is. What I have heard that the penalty for this is even death. Is this true?

I bet some people will read into the high approval rating of Muslims and think that Obama is either secretly a Muslim himself, getting handouts from Muslims, or is in some way a bad president because of this.

Hey Russell Pierce, the author of our 1070 law is a Mormon. What a coincidence that they don't like black people as much as they don't like brown ones. I am safe though ... I am beige.

And they wonder why a large majority of people think he is Muslim! He was raised Muslim. Just because he sat in a radical church pew for 20 years doesn't change the fact that he was born and raised Muslim!
