Poll: Muslims have highest Obama approval; Mormons lowest

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/08/25/art.obama.0825g.gi.jpg caption ="A newly released poll shows Muslims have the highest approval rating of President Obama."](CNN) - President Barack Obama gets his highest approval rating among religious groups from Muslims and his lowest from Mormons, according to a newly released national poll.

A Gallup survey indicates that in the first half of this year, 78 percent of Muslims approved of the job the president's doing in the White House, while just 24 percent of Mormons give Obama a thumbs up. According to the poll, the president's approval rating among Protestants and other Christians was 43 percent, it stood at 50 percent for Catholics, 61 percent among Jews, 63 percent for Atheists, Agnostics and those with no religion, and 64 percent for those from other non-Christian religions. The president's approval among all Americans stood at 48 percent.

The survey indicates that Obama has lost 15 points on his overall approval rating from the first half of 2009 to the first half of this year, and that he has lost slightly more ground than average among Mormons and has receded the least among Muslims.

"The differences in Obama's approval ratings across the religious groups included in this analysis have held fairly constant across time, even as Obama's overall rating has fallen by 15 points between the first half of 2009 and the first seven months of this year," says a release by Gallup.

American Muslims have been in the headlines over the past few weeks, thanks to the controversy over a proposal to build an Islamic center, that would include a mosque, near ground zero in New York City. The president has spoken out in support of the legal rights for the Islamic center to be built. But the polling in this survey was conducted before the controversy made national headlines.

The findings of the Gallup poll are based on interviews with more than 275,00 adult Americans conducted as part of Gallup Daily tracking from Jan. 21, 2009, through July 31, 2010. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus one percentage point.

No wonder here, though the survey is itself ridiculously divisive. Mormons did not acknowledge the equality of black people in their religion until well after the civil righst movement, both in the "here and now" and the afterlife.

Those are high approval numbers across the spectrum. I can care less about what the polygamists mormons think. I'm sure they all support Romney. Anyway, Muslims support the President for extending a hand to the Muslim community. His speech in Cairo clearly was a bridge builder and focused on ways to move forward.

How can only 48% of Americans think Obama is doing a good job? I would think this number would be at least a solid 60%

So...............? Is this meant to stoke some reaction. Sad Sad... what other demographics were polled here? Christians, Jews, athiests, Budhists, Hindus in comparison perhaps?. Lazy foolish journalism CNN. Its a pity that this was allowed to be posted. You have a responsibility as journalists to present a balance picture. The news Editor of this section should adhere to standards. Shame on you!!!!!!!!!!!11

Too bad they didn't break out the various Protestant sects - I'll bet there is quite a range hidden behind that 43% average. All the Quakers I know just love the guy.

Mormons consider Obama an "Outcast Son of Ham". AKA Mormons are racist by the definition of their religion.

Aside from that, does someone at CNN still wants to keep the Obama Muslim thingy still going? Whatsamatter, did Sister Palin get stung by Trumka so bad that CNN wants to divert attention?

So, what was the cutoff date for the "religious" groups polled? Mormonism is a 19th century cult. Did they deliberately not include other, more recent cults, like the Branch Davidians? I want to know how Obama polled among Hari Krishnas, while you're at it. Include one fringe group, include them all!

I'm an active, dedicated Mormon and I give President Obama a 100% rating. I think he's the greatest president in at least a century.

    YOUR POLLS MEAN NOTHING!!!
The politial ticker has become nothing but Polls and Palin ALL THE TIME!! And then you turn around and put 'This Day on the Ticker' which isn't even NEWS (the root word of news is NEW)
And then the articles that are worth commenting on...ARE CLOSED FOR COMMENTING at 5 comments...
After that, your journalism is craptastic, craptacular crapy crap.

Well its not like the Mormons even matter, everyone knows they are crazy white racists. Should just completely get rid of all of them and it would make the world a better place!

Of course! What else did we expect? They have to support their own. What else is new. This will continue to happen as long as our so called president starts to believe and be proud of America.

As we all now, there is a FAT CHANCE of that ever happening.

    God bless and protect America.

Go to Utah and visit the mormons on a Sunday and you will see first hand, everything is closed.......
