Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Iraq on Monday to participate in a ceremony marking the end of the U.S. combat mission there, according to the White House.

He was greeted in Baghdad by U.S. Ambassador Jim Jeffrey, outgoing U.S. commander Gen. Ray Odierno and Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.

While in the country, Biden will meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, President Jalal Talabani, Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi, Vice President Adil Abd al-Mahdi and other political leaders "to discuss the latest developments in Iraq and to urge Iraqi leaders to conclude negotiations on the formation of a new government," the White House said in a written statement.

The United States' official combat mission in Iraq is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday. Roughly 50,000 troops, however, will remain in the country until the end of 2011. Their mission will be to will train, assist and advise the Iraqis.

  7. More change in November (but good change)

Biden needs to stay in Iraq until all troops come home. He can do less damage there (maybe).

The same man that said the war was lost and we need to divide the country into 3 sections.

The best political team on TV fails to as the tough and just questions.

Mr. VP were you 100% wrong when you declared that the war was lost and was your prescription of dividing Iraq even more wrong?

@ Tangled Thorns who wrote "Don't forget to thank President GW Bush for succeeding with the surge"

GWB LIED us into a war that lead to the loss of thousands of U.S. servicemen and thousands of innocent Iraqis. Where are the WMD? Where's the yellow cake uranium. GWB doesn't get any credit from me for the surge or anything else that has to do with this war. We should not have been there in the first place.

What .. no flight suit or aircraft carrier banners this time?

    Good idea!

Oh .... and anyone who wishes we had stayed on for McCain's 100 indefinite years ....

Feel free to continue to donate as much of YOUR OWN money as you want to your cause ... or to take a plane over there and keep fighting on your own dollar.

I'm sick of you guys spending MINE ... to have a govt forced on Iraqis that they never asked for ... at gunpoint ... based on things we never found to begin with.

    What's that?

    No takers?

    LOL! That's what I thought.

Thanks for wasting my money ... cowards!

Had George W Bush never invaded a sovereign country based on lies, we would not have the raging deficits nor the immense loss of life of our patriotic soldiers. I have yet to read anything anywhere that tells me what the USA gained by this Republican driven stupid war and I read the Wall Street Journal and the Economist. Can The Hague now send out subpoenas to GW Bush and DICK Cheney to report and answer for war crimes against humanity?

  14. Political fodder - Shame on Biden

Biden is celebrating the end of combat ops in Iraq - this from the man who voted against the surge; said it would never work; and wanted to break Iraq into three separate states - Sunni - Shiite and Kurd - all but guaranteeing civil war and meddling by Turkey and Iran -

neither has any clue -- TIme to kick them out -- Biden can take the train back home and Obama can go back to being a political organizer

Hey Joe, would it be out of line to show some class and bi-partisanship but thanking George W. Bush for putting the plan in place ALLOWING us to leave Iraq in victory rather than defeat? I didn't think so.......

Joe, you and Obama are so classless with no moral values or character. Just once show some class and thank the previous administration for their success in Iraq.........

  19. about time ...

Thank God this idiotic war is over or nearly over – there is plenty of blame for this tragedy on both sides of the aisle. And remember Repugs, Bush was the one who started the withdrawal process (but heaven forbid we let a little thing like facts get in the way of our invective)

We never should have been there! Now the terrorists will flood in and kill the country – so it will fall now that we removed their leader. Even though a demon – he kept those thugs in line! We wasted lives and money. Obama = Bush = brainless boobs!
