Borger: Will Obama be a Clinton – or a Carter?

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/08/05/art.borger.6.cnn.jpg caption =" Gloria Borger says President Obama's discussion of economy fell flat."]
Editor's note: Gloria Borger is a senior political analyst for CNN, appearing regularly on CNN's "The Situation Room," "AC360°," "John King, USA" and "State of the Union" as well as participating in special events coverage.

Washington (CNN) - There are just times, when you are president of the United States, that formally speaking to the American people is part of the job.

Not because it's politically wise, or even politically advisable - but because you have something important to say. As in, the seven-year-combat-mission-in-Iraq-is-over. Or, more specifically, as President Obama said, "it's time to turn the page."

It wasn't a particularly artful speech, nor was it full of new and interesting ideas. It was what it was: a ceremonial proclamation ending combat in a war Obama inherited (and opposed) and a declaration to fight another war (also, as he says, inherited) on the economy.

Obama is no more led around by the union bosses than the GOP is led around by the BIG Corporations, BIG Banks, Wall Street, Oil Companies and the Very Rich........so you are the one that is stupid to think that Obama is being controlled by anymore of the powerful than the GOP....that's what you call a HYPOCRIT..........

A better question is....Will the American people be like they were for Bush when he was voted back in for a second term or like for Clinton in his second term? Unfortunately we tend to be blind as to what this country needs and vote on the false hopes provided by candidates. Obama should be remembered for taking steps that many before him failed to do. It is just a shame he had to follow Bush's 8 years, nobody seemed to care about a thing during those 8 years. Why now? Ask the GOP who preach fear.

Neither Clinton or Carter tried to turn this country into "a socialist utopia" so i don't think a comparison is in the mix.If leadership is the measure than Obama is more like Carter than Clinton.

Dear Beth...comparisons are just a fact of life. But you are right he is in a class all by himself. This isn't meant as a compliment.

Why don't you media lunkhead and the Republican party stop trying to push Obama into a hole that is to your liking? He is the president – accept it or shut up.

All I hear in the rightwing press, WSJ specifically, is that he said nothing about the surge.

He could have said that Bush etal put us into the Iraq war based on lies and then the lies were modified into three different reasons, all baloney, to justify the war. But he was nice – why I don't know.

Sorry, the war was wrong when it was started and it is still wrong. Obama stopped the bleeding of US soldiers and the IRaqi people. Bush wouldn't and McCain did not want to .

I didn't vote for Obama the first time.
But let me make this crystal clear.
To compare Obama to Carter in any
way is an extreme insult to Obama.
Obama suffers from a sophmoric attitude
which is credited to an idealist with too
    much education.
Carter, on the other hand, was totally lacking
in common sense and would not take advice
    from anyone.
Obama will most likely become a better leader
as time goes on. Carter was never a good leader.
And by the way, as of right now I say Sarah Palin 2012 !!!

I don't know. I my PERSONAL opinon president Obama just doesn't seem sincere about anything when he speaks except maybe when he talks about his kids. Everything else it seems as if its just not a big deal deal to him. People like the smooth non excitable Obama as a candidate, but they want their president to feel passionate about issues they care about. He defintely wont be a Bill but probably not a carter either.

When people were freaking out about the quitter governor being selected by Gramps as his running mate, and making a comparison between her and Quayle, Borger, the so-called expert tried to say that since Quayle won, it was more than likely that the Reps would win the 2008 election as well. *poof* went her credibility. Gloria "Bogus" will get it wrong again.

President Obama DOES think enough of himself, his ideas and intentions to run for President... That awareness doesn't make him narcissistic He WON, so a lot of us agree with those ideas and intentions, even now.

To be clear, Republican Richard Nixon left office on his own in order to avoid the humiliation of impeachment over CRIMINAL ACTIVITY (Watergate cover up). I assure you that if Republicans could find ANYTHING, no matter how trivial to try and impeach this president with, they would do it.

The eight years of the Obama administration will be looked back on with honor.

Stop comparing people to each other. The President is his own and that is what we voted for. By the way, where is all the coverage of the Israel, Palestinian talks?

This man has done much more than i even imagined. Thank got people got smart in the last election .

Gloria, sometime like you and other times, I think you're way off. Lately, you've joined the chorus of pundits declaring that President Obama needs to "explain more..." or "make it clearer what his intentions are..."

He's explains til he's blue in the face... And you'll act like you don't understand.

    Notice I said "act".

    Your fear drives you.

I don't think that anyone really understands what Obama is about. I am not sure anyone ever will. So far he has taken credit for the efforts of others, even in his own party. Obama supporters can say what they want, but, he will be a one term president. So far he has implemented plans that will cause your cost of living to increase and your disposalbe cash to decrease. The net result will be a lessening of the life styles that we all have come to enjoy in the name of social equality. If that means he will be a Carter then so be it.

Gloria, Obama is the worst worst prez we have so far among 44? At the minimum, the majority of American voters believe that Obama is much worse than Carter, who has already claimed the title of the worst president in history. When people vote for a president, don't just listen to his beautiful words and promises, like the current president. We should learn from this experience with Obama.

Yeah obama is obama and not clinton or carter. He is in a category all by himself which means he is even worse than carter. Bill Clinton was smart enough to move to the center after the mid term elections and won re-election. obama will never move from the extreme left and thereford he will be a one term occupant of the White House.

    @AB Baltimore MD,@beth; I agree.
@awaitingliberalizationbyCNN, I disagree, however, the very real problem that Obama has is likes of your kind. You are a devote follower of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck and the Tea Party who are all financed by billionares David & Charles Koch and Rupert Murdock. What you say comes directly from their playbook. And your kind is precisely the reason why Obama cannot say more than what he has said. Everything Obama says gets distorted against him. Its your kind who have this country all screwed up.
@Gloria, I think 'beth' has it right. Tell us Gloria, if you were in Obama's shoes. What would you be saying, keeping in mind the very screwed up political envirement around us? Not very much is what I would be saying. You cannot win a debate that has completely uncooperative players. Look for Obama to be more journalistic and not editorialistic from now until after the elections. He has no choice.

He's going to be a one-term chump forced to govern from the center after the midterms. In that respect, he'll be a hybrid of Carter and Clinton.

  21. Hogwash from the great 57th state of obama's mind

    Nice piece.

I really think he comes across as weak when he continually blames Bush for everything. As a leader, you take responsibility or people will not follow. I guess having no experience as a leader, he never learned this and it shows.

So far, he is looking to be a worse president than even Jimmy Carter. He comes across as weak, indecisive, and a poor decision maker. Maybe that is incorrect as I am not sure he has made a decision yet.
Hopefully he is as smart as people say he is, (although all evidence to the contrary to this point), and realizes his mistakes and becomes better. Otherwise, he will go down as the worse president in history and Jimmy Carter can get some relief.

What you proffesional left fail to realize, is that a majority of Americans now know exactly what happened, and that is that the democrat controlled congress has been screwing up this country by the numbers, for quite a few years.

The only thing that the dems have going for them are large urban districts with a bunch of brain dead minorities that will keep voting in the likes of Pelosi.

You libs are finished in Nov.

And the OTP (one term president) Obama, he's 10x worse than President Carter ever was.
