Beck scoffs at 'lie' allegations

Beck is laughing at critics who are making a big deal over his 'lie.' at last weekend's rally.

Beck is laughing at critics who are making a big deal over his 'lie.' at last weekend's rally.

(CNN) -Glenn Beck is scoffing at recent attacks from MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and others after the Fox News host inaccurately told the crowd at his recent Washington, DC rally that he "held" George Washington's handwritten inaugural address.

"I thought it would be a little easier in the speech," Beck told his radio listeners Thursday as he dismissed the most recent liberal attack directed at him.

The uproar from the left came in response to a comment Beck made during his Restoring Honor rally on the National Mall last weekend in which he said, "I went to the National Archives and held the First Inaugural Address written in his own hand by George Washington."

Turns out the Archives' policy doesn't allow members of the public to touch rare documents like the First Inaugural Address. Instead, Beck was permitted to view the document through plastic – prompting Olbermann to declare "his story that he actually got to hold it…is wrong."

"His fib stands in stark contrast to the point of the rally, which was all about restoring the principles of courage and honor that the nation was founded upon," the publication Mother Jones chimed in.

But Beck himself didn't seem frazzled by the allegations.

"They are like, 'He's such a liar. Glenn Beck is such a lair!' said Beck laughing off the criticism.

"I thought I'd be a little easier than to say, 'Yesterday, I went to the National Archives, and they opened up the vault, and they put on their gloves, and then they put it on a tray, and they wheeled it over, and it's all in this hard plastic, and the because you're sitting down at a table and you can't – because of [Former National Security Advisor] Sandy Berger - you can't actually touch any of the documents because they are very rare'…..I thought it was a little clumsy to explain it that way."

"Might have been a little too much useless information!" Beck exclaimed. "Once again, they caught me."

Glenn Beck is an entertainer. His sole responsibility each day is to attract viewers and promote his own name as a brand. He is not rewarded for integrity, accuracy, nor fairness so we have no reason to expect these ideals from him, nor should we delude ourselves to think he aspires to any of them. The fact that people compare him in any way to the President is an alarming reminder of how warped our society's perception of reality has been skewed by TV news. The President is an executive whose every decision has far-reaching implications, Glenn Beck is simply a muse who should be evaluated ONLY on his ability to get people to watch his program or buy his book (unless his employer also has an agenda to propegate). He is a very successful entertainer and self-promoter, but then the lights go off, and then he goes to bed.

If Beck lied about his . . . what other lies has he told? Of what other "mis-information" has he spewed and sucked up by his gullible listeners? He, like Hannity, LImbaugh, Coulter, Carr et al are not journalists, but entertainers, with no one fact-checking them. Anything they say is the "gospel" to their listeners. Who should we be afraid of . . . the "Spewers of Lies" of their listeners?

The man lies all the time. Is this news? No, because the people who believe him believe him in a way that a simple child would believe in the Easter Bunny or Santa Clause. Facts are meant to be created. It's called Creationism.

What most Americans fail to realize is that if this political figure were a Democratic the Republicans would have hired Ken Starr and wasted millions of dollars in trying to prove that he lied while Osama Bin Laden builds his terrorist network. I know it stings for Republicans, but this is the same type of lie they impeached Clinton for and it only stalled the government, so let us enjoy this great moment in hypocritical history. Next week, we will talk about the Gay Marriage and how it goes against the 1st amendment's freedom of religion, that's the amendment before the 2nd amendment that Republicans use against any gun rights candidate. Common Sense, its an amazing thing!

Glenn Beck is not only a liar....he's an egomaniac who can't decide if he's a politician or a preacher....he spews such inane nonsense and inaccurate history. I am just waiting fo read where he finally cracks and ends up in a padded room instead of rambling at rallies.

It appears that he is not just a liar, but a pathological liar. He lies when the truth would do as well and shows no remorse whatever when he is caught at it. That is actually more an illness than a character flaw.

Beck also lied about the Washington Monument. Either he makes up his realities to suit the feeble-minded who follow him, or else he is incredibly stupid.

For all Beckies out there: He IS a liar, and does nothing more than attempt to keep an audience with lies, or mistruths as you might call it. He got busted out on The View lying about Barbara Walters & Whoopi. What? No one likes it when he's called out on it? He can't even let people finish a sentence without intruding or screaming at them. He's a pathetic excuse for a human being. And no, there's no double standard...Glenn and his brainwashed followers have Faux News, we have CNN!

Could Anonymous and Jane be specific about the "lies" Obama has told?

Molly, do you know what fascism is? Have you ever actually read the U.S. Constitution?

So what he's saying is that he can't be bothered just telling the truth. Couldn't he have just said, "I saw it with my own eyes"? Heck, the whole idea of them willingly going through all that work so he could see it is a MUCH better story than "I held it." Evidently Beck felt that the people there would not be able to follow more than a sentence when telling a story, however. Shows what he thinks of the Tea Party, I guess.

And, please – insisting that "liberals are just as bad" is not an excuse for allowing Beck to get away with this, even if it were true. Unless you really feel that Conservatives have lower standards than Liberals and it's okay for them to be untrustworthy. Maybe that's the problem – Conservatives are too willing to let anything go as long as it suits them. Shame there.

I thought his lie or ignorance about the Washington Monument was pretty bad, but this is just nit-picking. Beck gives a lot more ammo than this for people to poke holes in his flawed views and opinions.

The right wing radio entertainers have issues with reality. They have their own view of what constitutes truth. Never mind the little troublesome facts. Their self-embelishments to make themselves seem somehow revelant just show how far from they have strayed from reality.

Jane, you have no clue. You have no clue until you actually live under one of Obama's lies. Obama said he was going to bring jobs to Elkhart and St. Joseph. And what did he actually do? He proptly started shipping more of our jobs over seas. More plant and business closings, more lost jobs. 1,500 people a month losing their unemployment benefits. Now this asshole wants over $100 back from 30,000 or so UNEMPLOYED Hoosiers. Why the hell does stuff like this not make the news??? Obama made a big hoopla about our horrid state when it was trendy to. Then quickly jumped ship on us once things didn't improve, actually they are still getting worse (Hopefully, Concord doesn't tank). How bad is it when our own congressman who is a democrat is running ads here that attack Obama (and Pelosi too, if you have seen them)? Where are these jobs Obama promised? Where is this recovery he keeps talking about? Holy Hell, is anyone going to actually help us???

Beck says "Once again, they caught me." Because Beck makes too easy to catch him. Everything out of his mouth is a lie! Let's get back to the bible. Either you tell the truth or any thing other than the truth is a lie. Of course people who consider themselves conservative, bible loving people would have it no other way, would they?

Beck lying? This is a surprise?

    September 3, 2010 04:00 pm at 4:00 pm |

This is precisely why Beck is NOT a journalist, or even a source of real news. He doesn't understand the "nuance" between fact and fiction. He thinks he can just blur over a detail because it seems inconvenient to spell it out.

For someone who knows nothing but how to act like a shock jock nutjob, this makes sense. Shock jocks can't go into nuance because nuance is not powerful, not immediate and not reactionary in nature.

Emotional, reactionary and violent forces like Glenn Beck are some of the scariest movements in the nation right now. I fear Glenn Beck's listeners more than I fear the Taliban. Why? Because Beck's listeners are HERE, they're VOTING and they're doing constant, tangible damage to our nation every single day. The Taliban, however, has never done anything in the United States that has altered my life in any real way.
