First-term Ohio Democrat struggles to keep seat

Canton, Ohio (CNN) - The broken windows and dilapidated walls of the abandoned Hercules engine plant is not just an eyesore for those who live here. It's a symbol of seemingly constant disappointment in this hard-hit district.

The factory was a good source of jobs in this community for generations until it shut down a decade ago. A few years ago, there was hope - a $178 million plan to breathe new life into the huge empty complex with retail shops and apartments. But when the financial system neared collapsed and the credit market froze, the project came to a screeching halt.

Down the road at the Stark County Fair, first-term Democratic Rep. John Boccieri says the policies of the past are to blame.

  2. Randolph Carter, I'm no expert, but...

I'll betcha those jobs at the engine plant went South to the right-to-work (scab) states and later went to China as capital sought the cheapest labor and most lax regulation. Have a nice day!

And Americans are about to return control of our Congress to the party that supports big business and outsourcing of our jobs.
And the sad thing is that the people who are going to vote against the DEMS are the same people who have the most to lose.
    AHHHH ignorance!

Any democrat or republican who voted against health reform should not be reelected. I realize 35 million uninsured people is small potatoes to the republicans because they are getting millions of dollars for voting in favor of the abuse by insurance companies.

I'm a staunch liberal, and I really really really hope that the GOP takes back the house. Why? Because this will put on display their utter ineptitude at governance as well as their inability to stop fighting amongst themselves.

Let me see if I get this: Americans want the Republicans who ran our Nation's Economy into the ditch back in power???? Insane!

Back in 1999, the Republicans controlled BOTH House & Senate, they passed the "Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999" this "act" eliminated fail-safe laws that had been put in during the Great Depression to reign in greedy banks and Wall Street.

With DE-regulation came all sorts of crazy stuff, like BETTING on the rate of foreclosure of American homeowners! And derivatives!

PLEASE, America, THINK long and hard before you put the Republicans back in power!

ASK yourselves WHAT HAVE the Republicans DONE for America in the last 10 years?

How do you explain to a right wingnut that the country was in the crapper before President Obama was sworn in? Even Bush and Paulson told us that we were on the edge of a great depression, and as a result, Bush gave almost $800 billion to the banks with no questions asked. I'll bet Fox lies did not cover that story, as they were making up conspiracies to scare the hell out of old people.

Ohio is a tuff stint for any Democrat.

The people there watch Fox News and don't think things over too much. They generally repeate what they hear others say about the politicians. They're easy prey for the Republican smear tactics.

Ohio and Alaska are about the same. The people watch Fox with their mouths wide open saying "Nah, really..l'm so mad I'll vote for a Republican." Next, they'll be saying that Obama is a Budhist and these people will believe it "Nah, really... I'm so mad I'll vote against him."

Another democrat who will probably suffer because he couldn't turn the Bush debacle around overnight. He might of had some success if the republicans hadn't sat down and did nothing for the last 2 years.

He SHOULD NOT be struggling to keep his seat – the Democrats are a bunch a CRAP and jump ship whenever the TOUGH get going!!!

It's a SHAME how our base is 'breaking at the seams' because of a bunch of EXTREME RepubliCAN'Ts – brought to you by BECKy, Palin and the Tea Party – are making the NEWS and the MEDIA is making sure they get FRONT PAGE, knowing damn right they are WRONG!!!

The POLLS LIE – they are polling REPUBS only because there is NO WAY Americans truly believe that a President should have only 2 years to get a country STRAIGHT that was on the BRINK OF A DEPRESSION and suffered for 8 years!!!

It's not fair and the Democrats – mainly the politicians – are a bunch of WET NOODLES and are quick to 'distance themselves' from the President!!!

Our base WILL NOT get excited through CNN or FOX. Tune into your favorite radio station and get the message from there!! CNN is stuck on glamorizing the Tea Party et al and FOX started this HATE!!!

The democrats have literally scared me; they let the republicans run out over them out of fear not thinking about the American people. We are now looking to the Repubs continuing to threaten to take away SS and medicare and run this country into another war after war. People do not listen to what these guys are really saying; they listen to scare tactics.

Yeah, Bush and the neo-cons did a lot of damage to the economy, but Obama and the Dems have been ten times worse.
