[cnn-photo-caption image= caption =" A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Thursday reveals that only 36 percent think the country is safer from terrorism than it was before the 2001 attacks."]Washington (CNN) - Nearly nine years after the September 11 terror attacks, a record number of Americans believe the United States is unlikely to ever capture or kill Osama bin Laden, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Thursday reveals that only 36 percent think the country is safer from terrorism than it was before the 2001 attacks.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans, however, are not personally worried about becoming a victim of terrorism. And most say they are prepared to deal with an attack if the worst should happen.

While the federal government has given no indication that it has stopped its pursuit of the man behind the September 11 attacks, only 30 percent of Americans now believe it is likely the U.S. government will ever capture or kill bin Laden. Sixty-seven percent believe it is unlikely.

  2. GOP Scorched Earth Politics

The GOP would rather keep him around to help drive their fear-mongering agenda and give an excuse to start more wars with Muslim countries. Bush already said on camera that he didn't care about Osama when asking by reporters...because all the Republicans wanted to do was invade Iraq even BEFORE 9/11. The War on Terror can only be won with a political solution regardless...and by winning hearts and minds. It's purely a war of propaganda. Buring Korans will only help drive recruitment for the enemy. Get a clue you fear-mongering Puritan Fundamentalist fruit loops.

Of course not. Bush and Cheney saw to that. They could have exterminated in in Tora Bora when the Delta Force caught up with him, but Bush said no. Bush is not patriotic.

Hard to catch him when your own Government helps orchestrate his they did by failing to deploy mines on the backside route off of Tora Bora during the Bush Administration, or better yet fails to assassinate him prior to 911 when they had him on his hunting expedition with the Saudi royals like Clinton did, I guess he didn't need to distract the American public at the moment with a military strike, or should I say blow...

It's not right to say this man will not be caught. GOD has him in HIS sights already.

  6. Randolph Carter, I'm no expert, but...

I just saw Osama playing golf with W in Saudi Arabia. They were laughing about how well their plan to enrich their oil buddies worked. Have a nice day!

He's Darth Cheney's best friend. Halliburton will defend him to the death. How can America fight against those two?

Bush should be forced to go over there and search for him. Bush is/was so worried about catching this terriorist. Bush needs something to do. Also send Cheney with him. These guys should be in prison, but the Democrats are letting them off.

Capturing or killing bin Laden will never stop terrorism but he will be captured or killed.

I disagree. Someday, when he least expects it, Osama will be visited by a drone. Evil is never forever.

Of course he won't be, he's been dead for probably 8+ years... Of kidney failure, AFTER the US forces in Afghanistan allowed one of the CIA's most important assets of the past few decades slip out, so he could die peacefully in Pakistan. Perhaps this was discussed at the meeting between OBL and the CIA's Dubai station chief in August '01.

Personally, I believe Bin Laden is already dead. He is much to high profile to stay hidden even in remote areas of Pakistan. If he is dead I hope he suffered greatly befire he croaked. If he is not dead, I can only hope what ever kills him does so slowly and painfully. Not very Christian of me but he and his ilk deserve it

Never is a long time. Assuming he is still alive he can still be caught. However, it became much more unlikely he would after President Bush decided to invade Iraq rather than waiting to deal with Ira

Never is a long time. Assuming he is still alive he can still be caught. However, it became much more unlikely he would after President Bush decided to invade Iraq rather than catching Bin Laden and finishing in Afghanistan first. Had President Bush finished in Afghanistan first he may have discovered there was no need to invade Iraq, or, at least we would not have been fighting two unpaid wars at the same time.

I don't think the predecessor administration ever intended to get Bin Ladin, as he not only gave them such a handy opportunity to go to war with Iraq and suppress dissent in the United States, he even appeared, neatly groomed and in apparent studio surroundings, just in time to put the kibosh on what was left of John Kerry's election chances after the Swift Boat campaigns. Who knows? The same people may need him again, so he is probably being well taken care of somewhere. In any case, if mortality overtakes him (or has done so) I suspect it will have nothing to do with American efforts, good faith or otherwise.

whether he is dead or alive matters not. If he is alive he lives in the rocks...if he is dead he is under the rocks. Either way, he is in a pile of rocks and is simply just another terrorist who caught us not looking.

I think we have spent far too much time and energy worrying about a guy whose final instructions should he be close to being captured is for his own men to shoot him. I get the impression he actually does not fight. Not much of a warrior for his cause when he chooses to hide and/or have himself shot by his own man rather then fighting.

Pretty typical profile of a coward who enjoys plotting but does not have an ounce of guts.

It is a lesson to be learned that even with all our fire power that we have and the best armed forces in the world this man that has nothing but the following of his people can inflect that much damage to our military and now it has comes down talking and gaining trust of the people in that country maybe if we didn't have the idiots that were in office when 9-11 happened and we had the support of the whole world from that terrible day we could have had the same out come without so many people being killed and so much money that was spent

IF this is true, then we only have one person to blame – GWB. He dropped the ball in Afganistan.

Just to avenge his daddy's nemisis – Saddam – in Iraq – where there were NO WMD's. Lies, lies, lies, and MORE LIES – Took everyone's eyes off of the prize.

Bin Laden can be found – and will be some day. It might just be his dead body, but he WILL be found. No one can hide forever........

If he's caught, our pols will argue for years what to do with him.
