Chicago, Illinois (CNN) - White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel will step down Friday to run for mayor of Chicago, two sources told CNN Thursday.
The move was expected, after Chicago Mayor Richard Daley recently decided not to run for re-election.
Candidates for the Chicago mayoral race must gather 12,500 signatures by November 22. The city's February 22 Democratic primary could be very difficult to win given the number of prospective candidates from various factions of the party lining up to run.

The country's loss is Chicago gain. Now, i don't care what you say .That's funny.
That is just an excuse. he wants to be clear of the pending disaster in November and since he is chief of staff it is logical that Obama will throw him under the bus.
Is this good news for the people of Chicago?
If Rahm were a Republican the headline would read: "SHOCK Emanuel to quit White House Chief of Staff position amidst a divided administration"
Please do not vote this man into the mayors office..
Something is not right about this move.
Can't say that I blame him as being Mayor is a more secure job.
Can we get him to take a few dozen of the other incompetents from the Whitehouse with him??? Now THAT would be change I could believe in!
And he will win the race for Mayor – no IFs – ANDs or BUTs about it!!
The fact that the press has spent so much time and energy on this guy, while he was "working" for Obama as probably the
worst and strategically catastrophic Chief of Staff ever, tells you a lot about the real priorities of the press. Disgusting and
worthy of People Magazine.
However, Obama should have fired hiss ass a long time ago. Obama has to learn to stop speaking and start acting. Soon,
or it will never matter.
how long will we allow Lawyers to run this country into the ground?
