SEIU rips Whitman at start of $5 million ad campaign

(CNN) - The Service Employees International Union is out with a new television ad in California hitting GOP gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman for paying an undocumented immigrant to be her housekeeper.

"Whitman attacks undocumented workers to win votes, but an undocumented woman worked in her home for nine years," the narrator of the ad says in Spanish.

The ad comes one day after the housekeeper held a press conference during which she alleged that she had been "exploited, disrespected, humiliated and emotionally and financially abused" by the former eBay CEO.

"Whitman says one thing in Spanish - and something different in English," the ad concludes. "The real Meg Whitman has no shame. She's a two-faced woman."

The SEIU said the ad will air on Spanish language stations in the Los Angeles and Fresno media markets beginning Saturday. It is part of a $5 million ad campaign launched by the organization to turn out Latino voters for Whitman's opponent, Democratic nominee Jerry Brown.

Whitman responded to the ad during a press conference on Thursday, saying the unions are "worried" about her success with Latino voters.

"Jerry Brown is very concerned because my campaign is doing very well with Latinos," she said.

"We have included Latinos in our campaign. We have done Spanish language media. Our website is translated into Spanish. I have been to Spanish communities. Latino communities throughout this state and I have worked very hard to win the vote of Latinos," Whitman said. "And I think they are nervous about it. Their campaign is in trouble. They are worried. They took Latinos for granted."

A Los Angeles Times/USC poll released Monday painted a different picture of the race for Latino votes. The survey gave Brown a 19-point edge over Whitman among registered Latino voters.

According to the same poll, Brown held a 49 to 44 point lead over Whitman among all likely voters; it carried a sampling error of plus or minus five percentage points.

  1. Whitman is much better

Whitman is a much smarter, economy-minded and capable candidate than "I earned it" Boxer. I understand that it is 'cool to be liberal' in California–regardless of the economic consequences. But come on, Boxer has been horrible for the state and nation–just check her voting record, spending and personal conduct.

More hypocrisy form clueless libs: BOXER IS ULTRA RICH AS WELL (as is Pelosi...).

Sometimes I don't think that CNN monitors these boards. There are always several false and offensive liberal remarks that make it on here. Then again, I've written conservative comments that haven't made it.... so maybe only conservative comments are monitored.

  2. Whitman is much better

Also, SEIU is the new mob. Why would anyone listen to those crooks (besides those kooks that vote for Boxer, Watters and Pelosi)?

  3. Whitman is much better

Brown has already been in office. He's part of the reason the California economy is failing and companies are moving out. Don't get me wrong, Arnold 'turned democrat' and didn't fix anything, but two wrongs don't make a right.

    VOTE FOR WHITMAN!

So, it's ok when Unions spend money to influence political races, but not businesses. Is that the line, dems?

  7. Vote Meg....

She has made inroads in the latino community – simply because the people who have come here – taken the time and money to do it legally – they don't want the illegals here to get amnesty either. Unions – can well do without them! Just like the little illegal who now admits being legal and admits signing Federal documents with a lie. Deport her!
