Manchin hits back with new ad

(Updated 7:49 p.m. ET with NRSC response)

(CNN) - Gov. Joe Manchin, West Virginia's Democratic Senate nominee, was the target of an ad controversy this week, and now he's retaliating.

Manchin's opponent, Republican John Raese, aired a video that showed three West Virginia voters saying Manchin should stay "right here in West Virginia." But, they weren't West Virginia voters, and they weren't even in West Virginia. Instead, the spot was shot in Philadelphia, and the three men were hired actors. The casting notice for the ad, which was paid for by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, called for actors with a "'Hicky' Blue Collar look," sparking outrage from Democrats.

The ad was taken down in light of the controversy.

But on Saturday, Manchin's campaign hit back with its own ad.

"John Raese thinks we're hicks. His people hired actors from Philadelphia to attack Joe Manchin and told them to dress hicky," the narrator says. "Raese moved his family to Florida to avoid paying West Virginia taxes. Obviously we're not good enough for him."

Republicans responded to the ad Saturday, saying Manchin is “flat out lying.”

“No one in the Republican Party, no one associated with John Raese’s campaign has ever used the language that Washington Joe alleges in his ad,” Brian Walsh, NRSC Communications Director said in a statement.

According to the NRSC it was the talent agency that used the word “hicky,” not the NRSC.

The Manchin campaign said the 30-second spot is currently airing statewide.

The Senate race in West Virginia is considered a toss-up by the Rothenberg and Cook Political Reports. The winner of November's special election will fill the final two years of the late Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd's term. Byrd died earlier this year.

I love it...call them out. You need to have economic stimulus when the nation is in the greatest economic collapse since the '30's. Millions of Americans need better healthcare options. Your FAKE actors and messaging is fooling nobody but your zombie base.

It doesn't matter where those people are the point is they ran the ad for West Virginia. If I were Republican candidate I'll share the cost and use that ad everywhere in the Country. Why??? Because it's true.

Like the actors in that ad, Republicans are fakes. If they advertise like this consider carefully how they would govern!

So what???? That Dems are calling female Republican candidates "whores". Like I've said before, get rid of them. None of them deserve to lead our country, let alone a dog shelter. Vote 'em in. Vote 'em out.

Thsi shows what the rethugs actually think of the average American. they pretend to be for the working class while making a joke of them to win votes. Why any self-respecting West Virginian would vote for this bunch is beyond me. and all the talk about the stimulus failing is outright lies, as is being proven every day to anyone who's paying attention to the real world. the rethugs are counting on angry people coming out in droves to put them back in a position to finish the job of ruining the middle class and bankrupting the country. i'm betting the American people are going to figure out who they really need to be mad at before November, the party of NO! the folks who block job-creating bills while complaining about no jobs being created. the party who whines about all the spending after turning a record surplus into a record deficit. the party that screams about getting government off our backs, and then wants to shove it into our bedrooms.

These political ads are getting absurd, why can't the candidates simply tell us what they can do for us. The opponents nit pick the ads and call them lies. Personally I don't care who they use in the ads, they are all terrible.

The real outrage is Gov Manchin trying to run like a Republican even cozying up to George Bush. Everyone in the country knows that if Gov Manchin goes to Washington in the Senate he will help keep the extreme left wingers like Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid in power. If Gov Manchin goes to Washington Obama and the arrogant Elite left will have won and will be able to continue with the radical agenda and trillions in wasteful corrupt spending and debt!!

That's what Republicans think of their base, stupid, dumb hicks, that they can exploit to make themselves richer. They even hire a stereotype of them to accomplish their goals. Sad thing is, they are right, and normal, intelligent people across the country have to live with their choices. Angle, Miller, O'Donnell, Bachmann, Palin, thanks, to all the hicks out there for these diisasters.

Funny! I can't wait to see how Fox spins this. Maybe that Raese is a 1st Amendment loving, true American merely exercising his right to distort as he may.

Tells you how folks in West Virginia really feel about Republican John Raese that they couldn't find any locals to say they support him ...

How about this, all rich Republicans think of others as "Hicks", they believe there is no excuse for "hicks" being poor. They want your vote, not your "hickness".

He could have used actors, no problem with since pretty much everybody (Dems, GOP and Independent alike) seems to use it since forever... so NO problem with him using actors.
But why did he had to use actors from a Northern State and shoot the ad there, pretending all along that they were locals and were in West Virginia?
You only reap what you sow... CONTROVERSY in this case.

Information in this piece is not accurate. The Raese campaign did not produce that ad, it was the NRSC. Check the facts.

Republicans are scumbags! This is no surprise at all, they pull this kinda sh*t so often you could practically set your clock by it! When you can't win elections on merit and accomplishment, you can always resort to lying your way in or buying your way in like Republicans do..............Facts are a bitch ain't they?

I wonder why the Republican couldn't find real West Virginians to be in his campaign ads. I know if I found out a candidate for office here had gone out of state to hire actors to supposedly be Arizonans who support them, I would feel that they were trying to dupe me.

well west virginia you know how the repos feel about you. More stupid repo tricks. If they cant come up with any new ideas on the economy their tactic is to just smear their oppnants and lie through their teeth. Vote the repos out in November.

Where do you think ads come from? They are all actors or bought and paid for supporters of the candidate. There isn't a difference. Get back to the issues. Manchin is a rubber stamp for Obummie. He supports higher taxes, Obummie care, and coal choking regulations. He is bed with the UMWA which by itself is anti-business.

The real problem is that Raese is a carpetbagging elitist, whose marble driveway shows just out of touch he is with Main St. America. Anyone with common sense knows you don't hire a pedophile to run a preschool, nor would we want the captain of the Titanic steering a cruise ship. The GOBP is a failed party with no valid ideas, only a slavish devotion to their Friedman/Rand cult. If you liked the ditch they drove America into last time, you'll love the canyon they're aiming for now.

The GOP plays us blue collar folks like a fine guitar. Lie to us, make us feel like they are with us, but do everything in their power to deregulate Wall St. and line the pockets of the wealthy. This is one blue collar guy who's done with that crap! I'm voting Dems all the way. Enough of the self-serving, greedy, holier-than-thou Repubs.

So let me see if I'm getting this right. A guy that is getting a tax break for living in Florida has a commercial done on behalf of his campaign in West Virginia, asking for actors who are "hicky" types to represent his potential constituents. In other words he thinks the good people of WV are hicks! And the people of WV find this appealing, and think this guy will represent them well in DC? This would be funny if it weren't so sad.
