(CNN) - Author and journalist Bob Woodward says he wants to teach his daughter about the electoral process, and that’s why he is a registered Democrat in the District of Columbia.
CNN’s Howard Kurtz of Reliable Sources inquired about Woodward’s political registration because of recent comments Woodward made on C-SPAN where he said he was a registered Democrat, but acted as a political independent.
“I take my daughter to vote,” Woodward told Kurtz on Reliable Sources. “She decides, she’s empowered, and that’s the main reason.”
Woodward pointed to Washington’s heavily Democratic voter population when prompted about why he didn’t register as an independent.
“It’s meaningless because the Democratic party, if you win the primary, that’s the end,” Woodward said. “So you would disenfranchise my young 14-year-old daughter,” he said jokingly.
Woodward also addressed his absence on Twitter, which many journalists now frequently use.
“I’m not sure what it is,” he said. “Part of my problem with the media…is the impatience of speed which drives everything. As you know, I do long form. On Twitter, you can do 140 characters.”
Most intelligent people are registered democrats.
Bob Woodward registered Democrat but his book 100% truth and when he interview people his questions have independent view its reflect in his book
Love reading his book
It does (or should) not matter what party affiliation a journalist has or subscribes to as long as they try to remain impartial professionally. We (journalists) are also citizens and have the right to have our own opinions regarding how the country, state or municipality is being run. Just because we may register as part of a particular party does not mean we are somehow "activists" for their cause. Even though I am a registered Republican, and have been since Reagan, I am just as critical of the GOP as Democrats. But I am free in this country to have my own opinions. It is sad that journalists like Helen Thomas and Rick Sanchez have been fired for making statements regarding their personal opinions on things. In the end, that limits the freedom of speech of all of us.
@ Charles Kim
Freedom of speech is not guaranteed to people who are employed in the private sector. You should know you cannot use your private company to express your opinions unless you work for the Fox republican party. But, once you are outside your private corporation, you can do the republican rant and lies all you want, as guaranteed in the constitution.
Questions and opinions are out of balance. In journalism I think there are times people hear what they think are the opinions of journalist instead of the question they are asking or have been asked. However, without naming names, I know there are a few journalist who should keep their opinions in check and are still on the airways.
I have read most of Woodward's books. I have always found them to be well written and very informative. I don't recall any incident where his facts were really disputed. Remember, being registered as a Democrate merely means that you are a Liberal, a Moderate, or a Conservative.
Being a registered Republican means that you are a wild-eyed, right-wing, extremist lunatic.
@ stufthis
Actually stufthis, intellegent people who think FOR THEMSELVES are independents like Mr. Woodword. By-and-large, if you feel the need to label yourself, it strongly signals (to me at least!) that you're a FOLLOWER, not a leader. Followers, by definition, don't think for themselves.
If your agrument is that most "educators" are liberals, I would counter by saying "those who can, DO – those who can't, TEACH". If you're teaching instead of doing, and you're liberal, what does that say for those wo don't teach? It says they have an open mind, and don't have a need for labels ... like yourself.
because he can think
I am surprised.
By the way he appears to support most Republi(k)ans and their positions (including George II) I would have bet money he was a Republi(k)an.
I guess I would have lost.
Why is Woodward a registered democrat ?
This is the simplest question of the day.
Because there is no other party, silly ! In case you are wondering, the GOP withered and died a long time ago !
The "Hell No" gang act like a bunch of grumpy ragamuffins...they don't qualify to be a party.
Woodward by is the most impartial journalist out there, I wish more would follow his lead.
Of course everyone has the right and privilige to vote as they please. This is America. By stating your party affilation you are admiting that you are biased in one direction and your writing will reflect that bias. Keep that in mind when you read any book by anyone. This constant name calling because of a difference of opinion is counter productive. You diminish your argument and yourself. A discussion of opinion is important and the reader has the right to choose their affiliation without being subjected to ridicule by those in opposition. This is called freedom of choice. It is what makes America the greatest country on earth.
Bob Woodward is nothing more than a Capitalist (the true American way). He is a pot-stirrer and is not content unless he can throw mud; it matters not at whom. He is loyal only to himself and for his own benefit.
Woodward seems like a very intelligent man. I have not read any of his books but this one, I will read!! No further comment!!
This is T'SAH from Virginia and I approve this message!!
PS – One thing I will agree with is the fact that 'Hillary' will be involved somehow in 2012... Yes We Can!!!
Woodward's a journalist. He has to be a registered Democrat. If he wasn't he'd be thrown out of the profession.
Intelligent people see both parties as the corrupt institutions they are. Wooward's books are anything but independent.
Bob Woodward lost me sometime during the GW Bush Dynasty.
First he was with W, then he became against W.
I detest spinelessness and waffling in journalists.
Bob Woodward ought to just hang it up.
Most of them are registered dims
It's interesting how liberals constantly target FOX News as being biased when you have Rachel Maddow, Laurence O'Donnell, and so many other commentators that spew liberal spin. So, it's ok for them, right? Not to mention Joy Behar. Stop the whining!
Bob Woodward is a dying breed. Everyone has a 'point of view', but he behaves like a professional giving each side an appropriate level of scutiny. He's an honest and diligent professional. He's one of the last real professional journalists; there aren't many left.
agree with stufthis, most intelligent people are Dems. sorry Repubs!
I think that you have the most leeway to make intelligent decisions if you are registered like Mr. Woodward. Act independent of the followers of fad political groups, think for yourself. Do not use the bible and religion for anything other than trying to find your way to heaven. Right now our country is in a world of hurt, politically speaking, but it's not the end yet. Endeavor to persevere!
Actually, I BELIEVE that Woodward has usually registered Republican during his life. If I am not mistaken (my memory isn't what it used to be), he used to make a point of being the Republican half of Woodward and Bernstein. And of course the Post is a conservative paper.
Woodward has always been both a classy and classic journalist – hard hitting, factual, doesn't pull punches whether he is writing about the left or right. On that note, what difference does it make what party he registers with? he has a right to vote and register for whomever he wishes – if you dont like that, don't read his book(s).
I have to say I like that he does NOT tweet; tweet, twit, and the 24/7 news cycle have ruined journalism, replacing good reporting with cheap "get it there faster" reporting.
He doesn't tweet because he has a life.
