Sources: Obama administration to lift deepwater drilling moratorium

Washington (CNN) - The Obama administration plans to lift the deepwater drilling moratorium that was put in place in the wake of the BP oil spill, two government sources told CNN on Tuesday.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and the new head of the government agency overseeing offshore drilling, Michael Bromwich, were scheduled to hold a 1 p.m. news conference on the issue.

The moratorium began after the Gulf oil spill in April, and has drawn criticism from Republicans, Gulf state officials and coastal residents for stopping some oil drilling operations. Salazar has said the moratorium was necessary to ensure a similar accident to the one that caused the Gulf disaster doesn't happen.

The damage of this USELESS moratorium has already been done. It has accomplished NOTHING except throw thousands more out of work. How many rigs have left the Gulf and taken the jobs with them? Will the oil companies be eager to come back knowing this clown administration could shut them down again on a whim?

Obozo and his leftist band of idiots have got to go! This country can't take another 2 years of this lunacy!

  4. If you read it in an email it is probably not true.

It is amazing how stupid many Americans have become. Obama has turned things around. We are gaining jobs – not losing jobs. Yes it is slow, but for crying out loud, He hasn't even been in office 2 years yet and we were in a huge hole when he took over. He has had to fight the repubs every step of the way and has had to settle for less because of the repubs and a few blue dogs who were bought off by special interests. Having to settle for less such as not having a public option in the end will seriously hurt everyone. But the party of NO does not care. They only represent the big money and special interest.

Obama plans look more long term which is what we should be doing. Repubs only look at things to satisfy their short term greed and care nothing about the damage to the middle class, our future competitiveness in the world, or the environment. We should have been off foreign oil a long time ago but we never will be if the repubs are in charge. With the repub plans – nothing will improve. Education will get worse, more and more people will go without healthcare, Medicare and SS benefits will be reduced or eliminated. The top 1% of the country will continue to gain huge wealth by screwing the middle class just like they did throughout all of the Bush years. We should be voting for democrats all the way to give Obama a chance to fix things for the middle class. If the repubs take over then the middle class should bend over and prepared to be screwed but this time even worse than during the bush years.

Do you think big oil will not come back and rape our environment even if there is a threat of shutting them down? While we all enjoyed Bush's gift to big oil in his last summer; record profits and $4 a gallon gasoline. You really need to show a little compassion for the 11 men who were killed and the destruction of the environment that our grandchildren will end up paying for.

Yep – and without the far-right EXTREMIST who think they are going to run things after November!!! DON'T COUNT ON IT!

Eww!! I only blog against other bloggers when they begin to get on my NERVES. CNN knows how to 'cast the line out' and I admit – I took the BAIT!!!!!

When the Moratorium LIFTS, the jobs will come back…Jeez! What IDIOT is going to leave OIL sitting there and not go back there to DIG??? Besides, isn’t BP paying for LOST WAGES????

DEMOCRATS – We will STICK TOGETHER quietly while the 'other side' thinks they are winning!!! Yes We Can!!!

This is T'SAH from Virginia and I approve this message!!!

Who knows how many rig workers were put out of work for months on end; yes there were some new policies drawn up, however the use of more than one blowout preventer is STILL not required. Way to go.

Salazar has said the moratorium was necessary to ensure a similar accident to the one that caused the Gulf disaster doesn't happen.

I was under the CNN induced impression that a judge in Louisianna had oveturned the moratorium before it evn went up, and these silly goons were allowed to go back to their deep-water drilling. Even though there was a fund put in place to make them "whole" while the moratorium was in effect. Of course based on the innuendoes that CNN passes off as news I could be wrong. Don't think so. I do remember clearly wishing that their ill-timed imprudence would result in ANOTHER unstoppable gusher with no SEAL in sight. It would've served the Court and those that could not see the unfeasability of safely drilling in those waters at that time right.

The problem with these companies doing this is that they are out for profit and rarely have any sense of responsiblilty. They are out to make money at the cost of everything else. Companies will come back to the gulf because there is oil and money to be made in that area. I just hope that they do a better cost analysis and be more careful before we lose all our wildlife in the area.

To 22 Days, if you had been paying attention, the pure capitalist system doesn't work. The problem is that so many companies are focused on making money that they toss everything else to the wind. There has been little in the way of corporate responsibility out there. The other item that you missed is that there has been some level of government involvement in business since day one - government buys things. I think that you also forgot about the New Deal that Roosevelt got through Congress establishing many things like a 40 hour work week and minimum wage. If you have every been unemployed, then you can thank the New Deal as well. I guess that you don't like that bit of socialism either.
