Angle in hot water for 'Asian' comment

(CNN) – A spokesman for Senate nominee Sharron Angle is downplaying the Nevada Republican's remarks to a group of Hispanic school children Monday during which she proclaimed, "Some of you look a little more Asian to me."

"Sharron is making the point that this country is a melting pot, and you cannot judge people based on stereotypes or the way they look," Jarrod Agen, a spokesman for Angle, told CNN.

The comments, video of which was posted by the Las Vegas Sun, came in response to a student's question asking the GOP Senate candidate why her television ads appear to portray all illegal immigrants as Latino.

"I think that you're misinterpreting those commercials. I'm not sure that those are Latinos in that commercial. What it is, is a fence and there are people coming across that fence. What we know is that our northern border is where the terrorists came through," said Angle in response.

The Tea Party-backed candidate, who is dead even in the polls with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, continued, "I don't know that all of you are Latino. Some of you look a little more Asian to me. I don't know that. What we know, what we know about ourselves is that we are a melting pot in this country. My grandchildren are evidence of that. I'm evidence of that."

Making up a quarter of Nevada's population, Hispanic voters are expected to play a crucial role in the Senate race and constitute a demographic that Reid has heavily targeted by touting his efforts at immigration reform in the Senate.

Meanwhile, Angle has hit hard at the issue of illegal immigration, running several ads that portray Reid and Senate Democrats as too weak on the issue.

Angle took down a recent ad that featured a photo of three Mexican men with the words "Illegal Aliens" scrawled below after the image's photographer came forward to say the three men were not illegal aliens but instead were photographed in Mexico.

Full statement Angle campaign spokesman Jarrod Agen:

"This is a low blow from Harry Reid. Sharron is making the point that this country is a melting pot and you cannot judge people based on stereotypes or the way they look. When she was in the legislature, a reporter mistakenly referred to Sharron as being of Asian decent. Again, making the point to the students that you can't judge people based on first glance.

"Harry Reid on the other hand says that Hispanics should not get to choose which party they are in. He doesn't think Hispanics should be allowed to be Republicans. Harry is desperate, he's losing, and he's trying to play racial politics.

"Sharron has said several times before that illegal immigration is not about race, it is about the rule of law in this country. It would be a misinterpretation to think that one group of people should be singled out. The issue is that we must stop illegal immigration by securing our borders, both northern and southern, and by enforcing our immigration laws. Harry Reid does not want to end illegal immigration, he is pro-amnesty, he is against the border fence, and he voted to give social security benefits to illegal immigrants

"Just about every week Harry Reid tries to pull Sharron's comments out of context and attack her, but she's steadily been gaining support and we have pulled ahead as we enter early voting. Harry's going to lose in two weeks, he knows it, and he'll do anything in the coming days to cause controversy."

This woman is a bigot. She makes race an issue and if she truly believed in the "melting pot:" of the U.S. she would not have to backtrack so many times on her comments and commercials. She is not the type of Senator we need in this country.

Those aren't suppose to be latinos in her ad. LOL. Please. The Tea Party/Republicans have to be stopped bcuz they see nothing wrong with the discriminating attitude they display towards individuals of color and other ethnicities in this country. They think their behavior is acceptable in modern society and its not. They all have that good ole boy mentallity and want to save america from the niggers, spics, jews, and arabs. How could any person of color support such a backwards group and expect them to respect you when their way of governing is designed to pursecute you. We need to get out and vote Nov 2nd and we need to vote Democrat.

It is unfortunately, since I started hearing from Sherry Angle, I have come to realise that she has no any filter of her words which comes from her own mouth. This is an early indicator that even if she will be sent to the Senate, her behaviour will continue be the same. This is not a type of person to be sent to a higher post/place like senate.

WOw..how stupid does she think those children are? This woman is a disaster. she covers one mistep by another. Her defense to portraying latinos in a nagative light is that she was portraying latinos and asians in a negative light. Seriously? If the Tea Party wants to be taken seriously, give us serious candidates! These people they have thrown up are a joke....a sad, sad joke that we all will be paying for.

    She's correct.

"Latinos" have part American Indian ancestry, which originated in Asia. I've known quite a few who did in fact look part Asian, including an Ecuadorean girl who had straight up East Asian eyes without having any recent Asian ancestors.

I'm a canadian who is just fascinated with what has recently become of you americans. I don't understand how in the world you guys could manage to nominate these really strange people and call it a movement. I can't begin to understand how, when you are faced with all these difficulties you would prefer to allow a bunch of inexperienced, crazy, nut-jobs to help fix the country's problems, it's like allowing my 9 year old child to run my household. It's beyond belief.

I take offence to that statement! Get your facts right. The terrorist were in a flight school in Florida and did not come from Canada.

Sharon Angle has hate written all over her face. Whether they want to admit it or not, the main reason for the "tea party"
existence is to have a vehicle for their racial bigotry. Which is wrong.

I'm sure some of the students thought "you look a little stupid" of Angle but were polite enough not to say it. Why do so many white people think Hispanics just got here? They were lounging around what is now AZ, NM, CA,TX, CO when we anglo-saxons were just hitting Plymouth Rock. Seriously, where do so many whites think the city names of San Francisco and Las Cruces came from? It sure wasn't from the King's court.

She could have spoken the truth and said you look a lot more stupid in person than in your mug shot. Or, it's hard to tell what you look like when so many of you are huddled in line while getting food stamps.

And people want this in the Senate??? Look I'm not a big fan of Harry Reid, but I'll take him over Angle ANY day of the week. You think the Senate is broken now, wait and see if Angle should pull this off. At least Reid is not backing off his stance on immagration, where Angle is backin off MANY things she stated shw was once for – Social Security, shes advocated doing away with it, but now doesn't. Immagration – now she's trying to soften her stance. She's even stated that she would be a "moderate" in Congress vs conservative..................Again, this isn't an ad for Reid, he's got his issuess. But Angle has NOT shown she's ready for the Senate. Do you really know how'd she'd vote on any certain issue as she's changed her views several times.............

Who in their right mind would possibly vote for any of these hateful, ignorant Teabaggers? Do the people of Nevada really want to give up their Social Security and Medicare benefits? Do they really want to deliver their own mail and put out their own fires? Those that tout they would vote that way, are bigger idiots than these candidates themselves.

This woman is completely unhinged. If the people of Nevada vote her in, they are crazy. There's a woman running in TN, Diane Black, who is just as bad. She comes on with her grandbaby and states unequivocally she will repeal all of the Obama financial and health progress "before it even gets started". Where do these people come from?

So Angle doesn't understand her own fear-mongering adds, won't accept responsibillity for the lies told in them, and really can't speak intelligently about anything. Why, again, is anyone treating her as a serious candidate? She's ridiculous and full of misleading information and deliberate lies just like the rest of the extremist candidates.

What is the problem? Barbara Ehrenreich, one of liberal's favorite socialists, wrote basically the same thing in her book "Nickel and Dimed". Paraphrasing: "They were Hispanic or Asian, I couldn't tell."

What she said. "I think that you're misinterpreting those commercials." What she meant 'I think we teapartiers prefer no fences for terrorists on the north border but higher stronger fences to keep out you dirty latinos trying to disguise yourselves as asians simply because I'm to ignorant and don't care enough to know the difference.'

I am as Liberal as they come. However, there is absolutely nothing wrong with what Sharron Angle said about "asians." The MSM generates a story line about a person and fabricates a "gaff" for entertainment purposes. There are plenty of statements that Candidate Angle has said about extremely important issues that could be discussed in a rational way but instead CNN cherry picks something that they can distort into a Gong Show quick fix for the non-thinkers. How about a reasonable discussion about the candidates position on issues and the consequences these positions would have if they became policy? It requires work, intelligence and courage, that is why CNN does what it is now doing, the best team in what?

Oi. What's with the candidates the Tea Party is putting forth? First the witch in Delaware, now this. Bad case of foot in mouth disease. By "Asian" she might mean the Colonial Spanish influence in places like the Philippines but anyone with common sense knows you don't make remarks like that in public – too inflammatory. Jeesh, we have enough enemies on the outside, we don't need to elect them from the inside as well. What a witless boobie!

Seriously... This moron has more than a couple of screws loose. Just the fact that Angle, like O'Donnell and Miller, is even a candidate for the Senate represents the perfect demonstration of the dumbing down of this contry.

This is news? If some of them happened to be black and she said some of them looked black, or if some of them were bleached white (up here in upstate NY at this time of year, trust me that's the case for a lot of us), she happened to say some of them looked pretty white, that it would be reason to criticize her? This is why the people she and others are trying to replace are a bunch of useless do-nothings; their version of accomplishment is to take other people's money and waste it and basically say nothing (although in Reid's case, he can be consistently mean-spirited and get away with it because he fits the mold of a moldy old man). I'd vote for Angle if I lived in Nevada; she's not the perfect candidate, but she has a freshness that has long dried up in Harry Reid.
