Angle in hot water for 'Asian' comment

(CNN) – A spokesman for Senate nominee Sharron Angle is downplaying the Nevada Republican's remarks to a group of Hispanic school children Monday during which she proclaimed, "Some of you look a little more Asian to me."

"Sharron is making the point that this country is a melting pot, and you cannot judge people based on stereotypes or the way they look," Jarrod Agen, a spokesman for Angle, told CNN.

The comments, video of which was posted by the Las Vegas Sun, came in response to a student's question asking the GOP Senate candidate why her television ads appear to portray all illegal immigrants as Latino.

"I think that you're misinterpreting those commercials. I'm not sure that those are Latinos in that commercial. What it is, is a fence and there are people coming across that fence. What we know is that our northern border is where the terrorists came through," said Angle in response.

The Tea Party-backed candidate, who is dead even in the polls with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, continued, "I don't know that all of you are Latino. Some of you look a little more Asian to me. I don't know that. What we know, what we know about ourselves is that we are a melting pot in this country. My grandchildren are evidence of that. I'm evidence of that."

Making up a quarter of Nevada's population, Hispanic voters are expected to play a crucial role in the Senate race and constitute a demographic that Reid has heavily targeted by touting his efforts at immigration reform in the Senate.

Meanwhile, Angle has hit hard at the issue of illegal immigration, running several ads that portray Reid and Senate Democrats as too weak on the issue.

Angle took down a recent ad that featured a photo of three Mexican men with the words "Illegal Aliens" scrawled below after the image's photographer came forward to say the three men were not illegal aliens but instead were photographed in Mexico.

Full statement Angle campaign spokesman Jarrod Agen:

"This is a low blow from Harry Reid. Sharron is making the point that this country is a melting pot and you cannot judge people based on stereotypes or the way they look. When she was in the legislature, a reporter mistakenly referred to Sharron as being of Asian decent. Again, making the point to the students that you can't judge people based on first glance.

"Harry Reid on the other hand says that Hispanics should not get to choose which party they are in. He doesn't think Hispanics should be allowed to be Republicans. Harry is desperate, he's losing, and he's trying to play racial politics.

"Sharron has said several times before that illegal immigration is not about race, it is about the rule of law in this country. It would be a misinterpretation to think that one group of people should be singled out. The issue is that we must stop illegal immigration by securing our borders, both northern and southern, and by enforcing our immigration laws. Harry Reid does not want to end illegal immigration, he is pro-amnesty, he is against the border fence, and he voted to give social security benefits to illegal immigrants

"Just about every week Harry Reid tries to pull Sharron's comments out of context and attack her, but she's steadily been gaining support and we have pulled ahead as we enter early voting. Harry's going to lose in two weeks, he knows it, and he'll do anything in the coming days to cause controversy."

I guess to Sharron all "those people" look the same. She can't tell the difference between Hispanic or Asia or any of those other groups.

Now do you get this woman. I will vote for Harry, at least he will protect the elderly social security. "this woman" screams about government, but takes from the "enemy". Is she so bias that she thinks all of America's immigrants are "hispanic". I guess "illegal" Asians would be "OK" . Send her packing. It'll be good for our country.

Look, folks, how much more evidence do you need to prove to you that Angle is not only unqualified to represent you in the Senate, she's stupid – and thinks you're just as stupid.

Harry Reid may not be the most charismatic guy in the world, but he has worked hard for your state and its people.

And to the people who say he's been in Washington "too long," two things:

    1. Since when does experience on a job – especially when you have a proven track record of doing well by your employer (you, the citizens of Nevada) a bad thing?

    2. Do you understand the meaning of "seniority" in the Senate?

For pete's sake, the terrorists she's referring to (9/11) did not come through the northern border. That's a myth and has been disproven time and time again. Not a single one gained entry to the US through Canada. Get an education.

Really CNN, what did you expect from this nutjob that stands in Palin's and Beck's shadow? And what is YOUR problem? You even have a section devoted exclusively to Palin. Are you really just a division of FOX News, that you have carry the hairbrained crap that woman spews? I swear, the world looks at us and scratches its head at our collective stupidity, that we would actually give credience to idiots and bigots like Palin, Angle and Beck. Come on CNN. show some ethics in jounalism. Report the news and tell the truth. WE need bright people with real solutions, not morons with folksy quips.

This woman clearly is clueless. Anyone who votes for her is not voting on brains or ability....merely igorance and anger. Good luck, Nevada, if she wins.

Sharron Angle should wear teabags in her hat and be married to Rush Limbaugh, they would make a wonderful couple.

Sharon, I believe you would say that of anyone that wasn't white and holding a bible. How deplorably insensitive and just plain ignorant. Yeah, we need more people like this in our government. What a laughing stock.

And this is considered a tea party success story? One aspect of this election year can not be denied. If we make it through this one, surely the next will be better. We've scraped the bottom of the barrel with this group, and hopefully the only direction is up from here.

Unbelievable. Aside from the racial undertones which are about 5 decades stale and bafflingly idiotic, Angle is completely wrong on the Canadian border being the route of terrorists. C'mon NV keep your wits about you and keep this freak out of office.

Is this woman for real? How could someone be so galatically stupid as to make a remark like that? The more we hear from these Tea Party candidates, the more idiotic they appear.

Angle is an idiot, and far too extreme.......personalize social security? Really? Would not force any new rules on Health insurance companies? i.e. no life time caps on coverage, children with pre existing conditions must be covered, children can stay on parents healthcare until 26.......Really Angle you wouldn't tell insurance companies that they must do this under new rules? The free market would just do these things huh? Well the health insurance market has had since the 1950's at least to do this.....and guess what? They never did, until HEALTH CARE REFORM.......End the dept. of education? Really Angle? Angle is extreme...... too extreme.
