WH bristles over top Republicans' remarks

(CNN)–The White House is firing back at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell after he told the National Journal that "the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president."

With his usual sarcastic tone, spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters "maybe Senator McConnell is interested in running for President."

The White House believes that fixing the ailing economy is the single most important thing, so top aides jumped at the chance to paint McConnell's comments as more business as usual, and part of the problem that landed the "car in the ditch."

Gibbs said there will be time in two years for a presidential campaign, but that "members of the Senate are elected and hired by the people of the United States to get stuff done for the people of the United States, not posture and play political games, gum up the system."

Senator McConnell's spokesman Don Stewart told CNN that senators "are not elected to rubber-stamp the President's agenda, particularly when that agenda conflicts with the will of their constituents." Stewart did not back away from McConnell's comments, reiterating that "ending the Obama Administration's liberal agenda as soon as possible is Sen. McConnell's top political priority."

He said the White House is only targeting them in order to avoid focusing on their failed economic policies.

At what point will America's unemployed understand that President Obama is not responsible for finding them a job! I think back to what my parents' generation (my mother passed at 97 this year) accomplished from the Great Depression through WWII, then on to an incredibly prosperous 1950's-1980's, I am ashamed at what our younger people are saying and doing. Nothing, IMO, that is good for our country to stay at the top economically, in particular. I wonder how many posters should be out looking for jobs and instead are wasting a huge amount of each day using electronic gadgets and online. If you have some ideas on how to promote jobs in America, why not put it right out here so the rest of us can consider it. And send it to the president. If y'all had walked into the horrendous mess GWBush left, you would be scratching your head, too.

Obama calls over half the nation that doesn't agree with him "enemies" on Latin network. Sure fits into the Liberal Progressive hate speech category. Congratulations just proved why this guy shouldn't be in for even one term.

As an independent that consistently votes against Republicans, I have to say I can't wait for the impending RepubliTeaParty takeover. Because there is NO question in my mind that these people have NO plan and are incapable of nothing more than extremist rhetoric and delusional whining. Giving them two years for political posturing, threatened government shutdowns, attempted repeals, ObamaHate, cultural/religious intolerance and the like will not only show the country how incapable they are, but will pretty much guarantee Obama a second term. This is going to backfire on them...BIG TIME. (The biggest bummer will be the RepubliTeaParty trying to take credit for the economic recovery that's ALREADY IN PROGRESS.)

Ok let's get real. Republicans cater to the wealth of this country. The current administration has attempted to improve the condition of the poor and middle class. Americans have finally figured out that the GOP's trickle down theory simply does not work. No bid contracts to Haleburton during the Persian Gulf Iraqui war was a good example of providing for the rich and ignoring the middle class. From the very beginning of Obama's term, Republicans had already decided they would work to destroy his presidency. They have perpetuated the worst disrespect to the office of the Presidency than ever before. We all know the answer to that. Nevertheless Obama is more intelligent and has more dignity and class than any member of the Republican Party, and that's something they can't take away from him. Our Presidednt is attempting against all odds to improve our economy, raise our levels of education and create an atmosphere of World Peace. The American people spoke in 2008 by saying they did not want an old man and a dumb woman in the white house. This mid-term they will decide if they want racially biased fanatical republican lunatics in congress......This is a no-brainer...........NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama/Pelosi/Reid policies have failed. WIth full control of COngress they could have done anything they wanted and the Repulicans couldn't have stopped them. THeir leftist agenda wasn't even palatable to Democrats. But what they did get done is damaging enough. Stimulus that failed and was a payoff to the unions. 25 billion for teachers paid partly with food stamp money of which 1 to 1 1/2% went to union dues and then Democrat campaign coffers. Healthcare that is increase costs becuase it is based on capping payments not reducing costs. The Dems need to go and keeping Obama at a one term is crucial.

Obama, the commies he has brought to Washington with him and the pathetic brainless, worthless ignorant scum who voted for him are the problem. Not the whole problem but the most of it. The Left, in all its varied anti-American, ant-decency and anti-human pollution must be publicly, loudly and unreserevedly flushed down the toilet. You wretched pirates have doen quite enough to destroy the great nation you have never congtributed to but only maligned and destroyed. Obama whines, like the little monkey stooge that he is, that he has not gotten "credit" for his depraved action. Barry you limo punk, you will get your recognition very soon indeed.

So you guys are telling me that you do not want obama to be a two term president. Ok that's fine. Yes some of his ideas are off. But remember, we were in this deficit before he got in the white house. Its not all bushs fault, its not all clintons fault and its not all obamas fault. Its a combination of all the fauls of these presidents. For you rich people, its not fair for you to not pay taxes. The middle and lower class can not pay your taxes for you. Our taxes are higher because you wont pay your own taxes. We are not doing too well as it is. It is both parties fault, rep and dem, that we are in this mess. To you tax payers, thank you. You are providing me a chance to raise my girls in peace. Yes you are paying for my food stamps and cash assistance and wic, but this wont last forever. I am in school. I will run my own business. And i will help pay taxes.

Just another of the long line of facsist leaders on the right. They will not be happy untill the middle class is destroyed and serfdom is the way we live. And dont say its not true make believe right wingers, all you have to do is look at what they are talking about....privatize Social Security(give your money to the banks to gamble with), abolish the Dept of Education(keep people stupid) that is and has been the plan since 1980. Keep the worker poor and hungry, blame everybody else for the countries woes and get very very rich in the process.

The liberal shills here seem to know little about the economic meltdown. The blame can be shared with EVERYONE including all of the greedy little people that took out mortgages that they couldn't pay in the subprime mess and the Dems that pushed for "affordable housing" and propping up Fannie and Freddie which were the enablers of the subprime market. As far as the Republicans I hold no high regard for any that failed in conservative principles. If we had followed those we wouldn't in this mess either. The White House has to think we are all as blind as some of these posters. They have not been focused on the economy or right about how to fix it. Tuesday is coming folks. Tuesday is coming.

It is interesting that the big fear of the Right is Socialism. Expansion of taxes. Expansion of Government programs.
Yet all the primary expansion has happened under Reagan, Bush I and Bush II. The Medicare prescription drug program was a hugh expansion of both government and costs lots of taxes.
Lets get rid of ALL socialism then, shall we? Lets get rid of public schools, fire departments, libraries, police, city and state government, community health centers, immunization programs, Medicare, Medicaid, the RNC, the DMC, highway patrol, public funded roads, highways, dams, national parks etc, etc.
What a great idea, no taxes and NO SOCIETY. But keep the corporations happy, they are the ones who with the help of the 'supreme court' give the kick backs to both parties.

Once a RAT always a RAT! And so it doesn't matter to the leftists that obama's socialist ideas are failing all over the world, they just keep voting demo-RAT...VOTE the RATS out... We The People will HAVE to VOTE Republican because the demo-RATS have stolen $Billions from taxpayers (stimulus $ etc. ) to put in their bank anonymously – like obama did in 2008 – Not to mention george soros & his ilk....They also have a.c.o.r.n. and Thugs in every precinct to stuff the ballot boxes. AND they have every media outlet in the country licking their boots, from the n.y.times, to l.a.times. And abc cbs nbc cnn msnbc npr. AND they have millions of "zombies" who vote democrat for no other reason than "always have – always will..." My hope is that the anti-God, anti-American, anti-Life, anti-Marriage, Marxist/Communist, Intolerant, Lying, Racist, democratic party will be completely destroyed by 2012....If it is not destroyed, The American "Dream" will turn into a nightmare (which is obama's hope for change) – – Once the Republicans are a majority We The People will have to take out the RATpublicans (there are quite a few) OR start a Conservative Constitution Party....

c'mon now...dont we all remember when the dems had 60 seats and told the republicans to "sit down and shut up...its our turn". and then came scott brown and republicans started thinking that thier voices would be heard again...just to find out that sneaky, lucrative backroom deals would rule the day. and now that election day is near obama tells republicans that they had better start working with him. some people called him arrogant...i call direct threats much worse than arrogant. and now obama all but tells latinos they had better vote democrat or he would make sure no immigration reform would be done...a blatant threat with blackmail tossed in. i might have considered voting for him at some point except for the fact that i am not a fan of organized crime...and im a white male which obama has expressly told me he does not desire my vote. and apparently he has the voter fraud rigg set up well enough to not need it...as a matter of fact i would not be at all surprised to wake up and find that my vote was made for me, and those military ballots will probably be filled out as well, all with d's. tariq aziz makes obama look honest.

The reason Obama is President is because of the stupidity of Bush and the Republicans.

The reason a Republican will beat Obama is because of the stupidity of Obama and the Democrats.

And the world goes around while we get poorer.

Those who claim that Republicans are against improving the economy because they did not cooperate with Obama, are fools. Obama had sufficient strength in both houses to get whatever economic programs passed he wanted. Rather, the Republicans opposed Obama was because they actually disagree with him. Those in the federal government generally have only one interest, to increase their power and they do that by not solving problems but aggravating problems on one hand and claiming they have the solution on the other. Freedom to the people comes only where the government is small and limited. David

Repubs and Dems are both out of work, and no new jobs are in sight for a very long time. No one, and I mean no one has come up with and instituted a solution for anything in two years. All of the politicians are interested in only one thing, and that's power plays, and their own salary and pensions.

Our liberal progressive friends who predominately populate the CNN Politics poll are so cute. They are usually clueless regarding such topics as individual liberty, self reliance, and personal freedom as proposed in our Constitution. NC Mike, although very smart and well-informed, is too kind to these grossly ignorant, self-mutilating fools on the left. They are indeed suicidal fools. Their pathetically misplaced, self-congratulatory childishly liberal nonsense would be amusing if these idiots didn't vote.

Make no mistake about it. Making Obama a one term President and fixing the economy are really one in the same. As long as a big-government Socialist is in charge of the White House, a healthy, capitalist economy is not going to be possible.

    October 26, 2010 07:09 pm at 7:09 pm |

That's exactly what's wrong with the GOP and the country. I thought as most Americans do (or at least did) that the main job of the congress and the senate was to help the American people and the country. But the GOP only wants to help itself and screw the country and the people. REALLY!?! This is not what our country needs. We need people who are FOR THE PEOPLE, not against them for their own gains.

Vote NO in NOvember to the party of NO. Lets give the GOP a real October surprise and vote them all out.

I wish McConnell would run for President... Obama helped create the mess we are currently in; he better learn how to work with a Republican House and possibly a Republican Senate if he wants more than one term. Needless to say, Americans through the Republican party, have a lot of work to do to reverse and undo what our current President and his party created.

what gets little mention is that the "failed stimulus" consisted mostly of tax cuts, and the "health care overhaul" mirrored more of what the Republicans had put forth years ago than anything the Democrats did. Lets also not forget that the "Tarp" was all Republican, written on 3 napkins that Bush blew his nose in, after which he then farted. Reagan once said "facts are stupid things", i never in my life thought that his sheeples would come to embody the message, but they have, and ohh have they embodied it. :'(

As we've seen so many times before, all the Republicans care about is power. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them are too dumb to use it wisely.

And, for the record, Clinton balanced the budget on the back of the military. Then touted that he reduced the size of government. Then chastised Bush for a military that was ill prepared for war.
