No African-Americans in next U.S. Senate

New York (CNN) - Despite record election achievements by African-Americans in the House, the United States Senate will not have an African-American in its ranks.

All three black Senate candidates, Kendrick Meek (D-FL), Alvin Greene (D-SC) and Mike Thurmond (D-GA) are projected to lose tonight. The only incumbent black senator, Roland Burris (D-IL), is retiring.

Only six black senators have served: three Republicans and three Democrats, including the future President Barack Obama (D-IL).

There have been 118 voting members of Congress who are African-American. This year the GOP has 14 African-Americans on the ballot, any one of which could become the first black Republican in the house since 2003.

There are 41 African-American Democrats in Congress of which most are running in majority black districts. CNN projects Alabama sent its first African-American woman to Congress tonight with the election of Terri Sewell in the state's 7th district. She is a Democrat.

The comments here are a disgrace and represent what's wrong with America! Race all to often comes into play when it has nothing to do with nothing! In the end, when it's your time to meet the maker, Color doesn't mean a damn thing! We are who we are inside and out!

Im praying for peace because there is alot of hate in the US now. The problem isnt what the president and congress is doing its who he is and what "they represent". Im not surprised there isnt going to be a black senator because I dont think most people care or want that. We are all one people and in the end thats what matters......

You ppl do realize that Obama hasn't even completed 1 term yet and all you guys are worrying about is what he didn't do. He's made enough changes for people in my surroundings and I can appreciate that. He said it will take "Time" which is not 1 1/2 years. If you haven't been affected by his changes then your obviously (R). You racists just can't stand the fact there's a black president. What did the last president do for you ?

Oh, I'd also like to add, @Sonny Sparkz

In case you are worried about there being all white people in the Senate – you don't need to worry. There are many other races besides black and white out there.

Sadly, anything negative towards white people is never racist.

It's still incorrect. It should read, "including the now President Barack Obama." I'm guessing she was cutting and pasting from something else and didn't correct the tense.

People keep complaining that cnn is always talking about race...well guess what the human race is composed of different races. As a black person I feel that honestly a white representative can represent me but only a black representative knows the majority of my perspective. Only a woman/man knows how a woman/man feels and only a black person truly knows how a black person feels.

Why are we blacks such a threat to white America? Can't you can't rid us? I will blame President Obama for trying to clean up the shit created by a white man in the first place. Remember, we knew civilization before you, as history proves when we have already discovered the alphabet, you barbarians were still fighting each other. Still continue to fight you Morons, as you are doing in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and you name the rest. What is even more interesting; you are fighting against people who are ready and willing to back to the house; fight and stress yourselves. At the end of the day, you would be remembered as the only race whose skin and flesh seem to be running away from your bones. Please don't hate us because we age gracefully. Who then was marred in creation. Love.

Sad of all this racist talk. The problem is more of a class issue. In my opinion all of the political parties are made up of wealthy people both dems and repubs. They can't began to understand people that have nothing. I am a person that has something and I mingle with them. They don't care about you. Its about protecting their future and creating a better life for them. I wish that the political sphere was populated with initellectuals that understands how complex systems work and could make theoretical decisions that would lead to good results for all as opposed to self-center lawyers and greedy business people

For those who think there is hate in America, you're correct, but what's really killing us is ignorance and a dire lack of critical thinking skills among a majority of the population. John Stewart had the right idea at the wrong time, and talking to the wrong people. Telling the people that would show up to his show and his rally that this nation needs a reality check is pointless. It's the people sucked in by Faux News, by the Becks and Limbaughs and Hannitys and O'Reillys of the world that need his message, and they would need a two-by-four upside the head before they'd listen.

I continue to hear and ask the same question to everybody who claim that Obama messed this country up. can someone who think like this tell me what things have he done wasn't already done. Its always good to see a minority in congress but only whites can allow that to happend. for all of the other minorities on this board talking about their race and why are african americans the only people talk about when it come to race. Its because we are the only race that fights all equal rights. we don't try to be like any other group just to fit in. Our people have been murdered, lynched, beaten, etc for equal right of all people. Have your race done that or have your race just fed off of deaths, beatings, etc that our people have taken. all you people can do is complain about why we talk about race all the time. Our people may have used our race as the reason or topic for our rights and freedom but they did it for all minorities.

What I would have said was I dont trust all those money- hungry- all good for nothing but to screw the poor- politicians. Which in this case its both parties. Thats why it is said " Woe to the man, who trust in man...".

What a sad day for America. It saddens me to have witnessed the positions some have taken to allow this circus to have happened. It is clear that it's not about the best candidates. I do not care what the powers to be say when they voice their opinions of it "not being about race." It is about race. Those who put the republicans in did not vote according to their intellect but they instead voted against the skin color of President Obama. Even some Democrats who have been hiding in their closets finally realized they could not hide it any longer and did not support them eas they should have. How in the world can a person with an ounce of intelligence think he could turn things around in two years when George Bush was given everything he wanted which lead to all of this mess for eight years. One thing is for sure – President Obama will still prevail. God Bless America!

It is no wonder George Washinton didn't like the two-party system. Democrats,Republicans,Independents,Tea Party Leaders,
Right-winged Talk Show Hosts, and TV Talking Heads are ALL TOGETHER EVIL.One last note... To think that race plays no part in the power struggle we are experiencing is pretty nieve.

Oh well, oh well, race does and always will matter. Old news. My only consolation is that MONEY matters more. Well, middle class we've taken our country back so now people who have the right skin color and birthplace can bend us over and give it to us good for the next four years. I can't wait for the govt. to shrink along with who gets to enjoy retirement, receive comprehensive healthcare, afford college, and keep their home. At least in 2012, Mr. Obama and Michelle can go back to enjoying themselves (millionaires before Presidency) while the rest of us (nonmillionaires) live with what we have been begging for! Yaaaay us!
