
(CNN) - Newt Gingrich is often a political provocateur, taking aim at President Barack Obama and the Democrats, but at a book signing Saturday, he was simply a history buff.
At an event promoting his most-recent book, "Valley Forge," the former House speaker, who appeared with his wife Callista, took several questions from the small crowd, most of them focused on American military history. He also indulged in some historical what-ifs.

Baltimore, Maryland (CNN) - One of the top leaders of a conservative grassroots organization that helped elect Tea Party backed candidates in last week's midterm elections says now is the time to turn political promises into policy initiatives.
Matt Kibbe is president and CEO of FreedomWorks, a group that has organized many of the high profile Tea Party movement events over the past year and a half, and in this election cycle, the group poured millions of dollars into efforts to help elect many Tea Party backed Republican candidates for Congress.

(CNN) - Democrats and Republicans are calling for a different kind of Washington when the new members of Congress assume their posts January. For both parties that includes reduced spending and a ban on earmarks.
"Given the deficits that have mounted up over the past decade, we can't afford to make these investments unless we're also willing to cut what we don't need," President Obama said in his weekly address Saturday.

(CNN) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has struck a deal that ends the leadership fight for the number two slot in the new House minority, multiple senior Democratic sources tell CNN.
Under the compromise, Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, the current House majority leader will become the Democratic whip, which will be the number two spot in the new Democratic minority.
