Gibbs Vows White House Will Have Votes on START

Washington (CNN) - White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs vowed Wednesday that President Obama will have the votes to get an arms control treaty ratified during the lame duck session of Congress, despite a top Republican Senator's insistence that it be delayed until next year.

The time frame is crucial because if there is a delay for the treaty, which needs 67 votes for passage, a new Senate with a slimmer Democratic majority will be sworn in come January. In that case Obama would suddenly need to line up seven more Republican votes from GOP freshmen who are generally very skeptical of both the Obama administration's foreign policy in general and the treaty in particular.

"Obama would suddenly need to line up seven more Republican votes from GOP freshmen who are generally very skeptical of both the Obama administration's foreign policy in general and the treaty in particular"

Which is precisely why Kyl is claiming there shouldn't be a vote on it until after the new Congress is sworn in. There's no rational reason for waiting...the GOPers just want to wait until they have more leverage in order to try to get better concessions out of the Dems and Obama on things. The START treaty is extremely important and mirrors what Reagan did. Any opposition from GOPers and conservatives should be strictly construed for exactly what it is: partisan posturing for advantage and an attempt to use the politics of fear to achieve it.

the White House is adamant that
I like the way that sounds: "The White House is ADAMANT".
The START Treaty is a good start. Keep it going with DADT, and the knock-out punch should be delivered by ending the tax-cuts to the wealthy.
Don't CAVE, FIGHT Mr. President!!. Fight for our country, and its' people. It is looking more and more like you're our last hope.

Will the slimy, corrupt, inept, incompetent president come out and point his finger at people also and make a similar asinine statement? And how will this create the jobs we all so deperately need? It won't, just this corrupt administration playing more political one upsmanship games. Probably trying to justify the Nobel Peace Prize the Nigerian idiot got for doing nothing.

Yes, gotta hurry up and rush this through just like everything else you incompetents have done that has ended up hurting this country in the end. THESE PEOPLE ARE DANGEROUS!! Absolutely NO Republicans should be voting for this right now. They owe it to the country and the future Senators that the people elected.

@Dominican – I agree – it's time to get tough and do what it takes to keep us on the right track!!!

@Nancy Pelosi, the wicked witch of the west.... What makes you think the RepubliCAN'Ts are going to VOTE on anything presented now until the end of the year????? They said NO to everything else in the past!!! Now, they're even trying to say NO on certain earmarks (check out your girl Bachmann who wants to REWRITE what an EARMARK is) AFTER saying CUT THEM ALL!!! This is so stupid!!

We will continue to MOVE AMERICA FORWARD to the 22nd century with our current leader – President Barack Obama!!! Yes We Can!!
