Washington (CNN) - Illinois Sen. Roland Burris is considering running for mayor of Chicago, potentially joining a crowded field of candidates that includes an ex-senator, current congressman and President Obama's former chief of staff.
Burris is leaving Capitol Hill at the end of the year after being appointed to fill the remaining two years of then-President elect Obama's Senate term.
A group of Burris supporters, not the Democratic senator, filed the nomination paperwork including at least 12,500 signatures needed to be considered for the mayoral ballot.
Kenneth Sawyer, a senior Burris aide, told CNN the senator is mulling a run for mayor, but added that "he hasn't made any decision yet" about whether he will launch a campaign to try and succeed retiring Mayor Richard Daley.
Burris' December 31, 2008 appointment to fill Obama's unexpired Senate term was controversial because it was done by disgraced Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The Senate finally relented and Burris was sworn into office on January 15, 2009. Two weeks later, the Illinois Senate unanimously voted to remove Blagojevich from office.
The filing deadline was Monday for the February 22nd election that is being closely watched by political types outside of Chicago because Obama's former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel recently left the White House to run for that office. Former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun is also running for mayor as is Rep. Danny Davis.

Oh Gawd - put him in his retirement home where he should have been for the past 10 years.
just another crook running for a govt office
This is hilarious. Every corrupt democrat liberal politician who can remotely claim a qualification (and for many they stretch a lot) is running for position. Now we know they are not interested in good government (Chicago has never had good government). For years this city was controlled by organized crime, which has now morphed in to public employee unions. What job did Blago want for Obozo's senate seat? An executive position in the SEIU. There are no honest democrat liberal politicians in Illinois, It is controlled by the unions and they will choose the mayor (one of their many conduits to public money to support their corrupt exectutives.
I wish he could have stayed in the Senate. Now we've got some lying scumbag republican holding that seat.
Can I get a yeah vote from my man in the White House, like he did when Blago appointed me. The great thing about the democrats is that they never, ever, let the circus end.
Chicago is soooo hopelessly SCREWED!! Nothing but a field of corrupt DemocRATS to pick from. Maybe Pelosi can come DRAIN THIS SWAMP??!!! She done so well with HER SWAMP! hahaha.....
Once you've tasted power you don't want to give it up.You'll do whatever it takes to get it back.Even toss your hat in the political arena along with the other crooks in order to get your fix.
