Senate cancels DREAM vote

(CNN) - Senate Democrats canceled a scheduled vote on the DREAM Act on Thursday, a move that means the measure is likely dead for this year.

The hotly debated measure that offers a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children narrowly won approval Wednesday from the U.S. House.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act - or DREAM - would create a path to citizenship for immigrants who entered the United States illegally as children under the age of 16 and have lived in America for at least five years, obtained a high school or General Education Development diploma and demonstrated "good moral character," according to a White House fact sheet.

    look JOHN D,
you are part of a family who has came to this country illegal. Trace yourself back and you will find it, and your family was given the honor of being a citizen, so why not let other students who actually work hard to stand where they are now.. Which is in college or about to graduate.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This bill will NOT pay for our college. Please get your facts straight. It will simply give us an identity so that we can apply for private loans and scholarships like everyone else. This is bill will only effect a small number of hard-working students. Everyone is acting like this is amnesty. Please don't vote against American youth.

So both liberals in congress and Obama want to strike down legislation aimed at protecting citizens in Arizona from illegals. Now, this legislation rewards them for coming.

Someone should remind them that the drug cartels are now targeting Americans. But I guess that doesn't concern them as the net vote-gain is worth it.

I am glad that someone has a brain! Even though I don't agree with this I still think we need a solution for all the illegals. I am glad the senate did not vote because its not fair to the other immigrants that went through the legal system that takes years and a $5000 fee that goes to the US whether you become eligible to work and reside in the US or have to stay in your country. As an immigrant I have had to overcome many challenges and work very hard, go to school, have a job and pay taxes so, I agree with the decision to put it on hold so that bad behavior is not rewarded with something good.

    1. $11 Billion to $22 billion is spent on welfare to ILLEGAL ALIENS each year by state governments!!!
    2. $2.2 Billion dollars a year is spent on food assistance programs such as food stamps, WIC, and free school lunches for illegal aliens.
    3. $2.5 Billion dollars a year is spent on Medicaid for illegal aliens.
    4. $12 Billion dollars a year is spent on primary and secondary school education for children here illegally and they cannot speak a word of English!
    5. $17 Billion dollars a year is spent for education for the American-born children of illegal aliens, known as anchor babies.
and this is the tip of the iceberg and don't try to say that by granting them amnesty these expenses will go away....they will only increase. You want to fix the economy?..... deport all illegals and build a gigantic wall on the border to keep them out.

Those brought here as babies and young children grow up as American as the rest of us. And the first casualty in the War on Terror came here as a child as well and was willing to lay his life on the line in search of citizenship.

This bill does not pay for college for illegals. From what I've read, they can get federal loans but not pell grants or any other federal scholarships. Only those with a strong and admirable passion to become American citizens and productive members of society can take advantage of that route to citizenship. That way, we do get the eagle scouts and smart students.

Also this will be a motivater for a lot of young immigrants and their parents to push them to do better in school than thinking that even if they screw around and don't do anything they can still become citizens. That latter kind of mentality is what I want gone from our schools and homes and this bill helps with that.

So Obama uses the hispanic/latino population to get elected promising all these great things, and when he has a super majority in the House and Senate he decides to do nothing. But he has time to give black farmers 4.6 billion dollars, give black youth free college via pell grants, give black people free health care (paid for with other peoples tax dollars), but when it comes to helping the hispanic/latino population he does nothing. He does not care about us because Michelle Obama doesn't care about us. You know who does care about us MARCO RUBIO! It is obvious the democrats want to keep the hispanic/latino community poor, just like they do to the black community, well that is not going to happen. We are nothing like the black community, we work hard, our families aren't bred out of wedlock, we pay our taxes, we actually like america. The republicans offer reward for hardwork, the democrats punish you for hard work. The republicans view is, the more you make the more you should keep. The democrats view is the more you make the more we are going to take and give to someone else.

"Please list those loopholes and explain the procedures and oversight mechanisms and why they fail."

They will NEVER list loopholes and oversight mechanisms because there aren't any!!! It's all part of their DREAM that they really don't want to ACT on – It will give President Obama too many accomplishments. The RepubliCAN'Ts know for the next two years – NOTHING is going to get accomplished because they are in DEEP SHITzkabobs with the BUDGET – cutting spending – bringing the deficit down – and EXPLAIN why they RAISED it to satisfy the RICH!!!

This would be total disaster for the border states and this country in General. Since when did we become a nation that Excuses and gives amnesty to gangsters. DO IT IMBECILES AND SEE IF WE CAN'T VOTE ANOTHER HERD OF YOU OUT OF OFFICE. BEFORE SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS IT NEEDS TO BE VOTED ON BY THE PEOPLE. THE CONGRESS AND WATERMELON HEAD ARE NOT SMART ENOUGH TO ACCOMPLISH SUCH ACTS.

I guess Democrats found out rewarding illegal behavior isn't high on the list this year. We are mortgaged to the hilt and this is what Democrats do to increase their base. They don't care about whats good for the country just personal interests.

the Democrats will keep looking for some way to allow illegal immigrants to obtain voting rights; they need to rebuild their base.

@GOP Taliban Victim- I agree with you on that. I wouldn't mind if it was just for military service. I think the US has something similar with people from the Philippines at which they get head of the line if they serve in the military for a tour. You don't need a Dream Act for that, I think the military already has the ability to recruit non-citizens, I was in the service and I saw it all the time. We need to seal the border first to keep our citizens safe first, then deal with the people who are here. And sorry it is my opinion that everyone who is hear illegally should be able to stay. I understand why they came, but at the end of the day. They took a gamble with their lives and the lives of their children. They come over demanding to be treated like American when they haven't earned any right to be here. And for every illegal that goes to college on my dime. There is an American child that doesn't. American should be taken care of first and foremost and that includes people who have immigrated legally and followed the process to become citizens. If I speed on the highway I expect to get caught eventually, and when I do get caught for breaking the law, I can't complain about it being unfair.

Can't we all see? The Republicans have now taken over, and caused the people to be divided again, and fight each other.
    Divide and conquer.

Yes why give a chance to education, we don't need educated people in this country we need to work on the globalization of Redneck America also known as the tea party, we should push all immigrant kids to do nothing with their lives and join a gang and when you get jumped on, shot, or burglarize, don't complain... for people not to give a chance to education it's just a big reflection of what this country is becoming a whole bunch of ignorant uneducated wakos.
as a democratic member I'm ashamed and disgusted by the democratic party. we are done with you guys we will be switching to LA RAZA UNIDA PARTY.
