Congress to be schooled

(CNN) - Constitutional 101 is coming to Congress by way of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia when he leads the first constitutional conservative seminar for members of Congress in late January.

Justice Scalia will lead the first session of the series created by Republican Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, according to Bachmann spokesman Doug Sachtleben.

He said the series is a response to conservative messages delivered during the midterm elections that called for the return to constitutional principles.

The bi-monthly seminars are part of the Tea Party caucus - a group Bachmann helped launch - and will "bring up principles that are already familiar to the members," including the bill of rights and role of government, Sachtleben said.

Bachmann was an avid campaigner during the 2010 elections, enjoying the support of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and raising her national profile.

In an interview on Lou Dobbs' radio show, Bachmann compared the classes to sports practices.

"We're going to practice every week, if you will, our craft, which is studying and learning the Declaration, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights," Bachmann said. "We'll have a speaker, we'll have questions and answers, we'll wrap our minds around this magnificent document."

Kathy Arberg, the Supreme Court's public information officer confirmed Scalia accepted the invitation and said he will speak about "Separation of Powers."

My suggestion to Bachman is before you can school anyone you need to have a brain. The only course she is qualified to teach is the theme of her new book: " I am living proof a moron can be eledcted to Congress". It is written in large print with pictures and has only 5 pages.

She's a fruit cake along with Pathetic Palin and O'Donnell. Where do the voters get their intelligence to vote for the likes of these threats to America? Scalia is a disgrace and shows it with the ruling to allow spending of any amounts on the fall election. How to buy America and not identify who did the buying?

this is no different than any other career or profession that requires in-service training. I commend someone for finally stepping forward and organizing this. I'm hopeful that good can come of it, to re-educate our law makers about the principles that this country was founded on. We've strayed very far away from it.

Why is it that the most important and influential laws of this land are written in single sentences, yet to "fix" healthcare, it took more than 2000 pages? Seems like the "lawyers" have run amok.

I'm generally not an optimist, but this one I can get behind and hope it makes some difference. I hope that the lawmakers take it seriously.

Finally.... at least Congress will "hear" the Constution as it was written and intended and not just hear some Liberal Dem spout off about what the "think" the Constitution shoud say! Now all they will need to do is stick with it, but that will be the hard part as long as there are Liberals in the Congress (but it won't be long before they at least are in the minority and insignificant).

This is the same Justice who barred reporters and all recordings from PUBLIC events at which he was speaking a few years ago. What business does someone who opposes the FIRST Amendment to the US Constitution have lecturing anyone on the rest of that document?!

This means that they will twist the constitution to fit into their right wing nut way of thinking.

I think that it is awful that a Supreme Court Justice can do a seminar for the coservative wing of the Republican Party. It looks like a real clouding of the separation of powers clause of the Constitution. Maybe that isn't an issue if the conflict exists for the wing's benefit. I hope that Justice Scalia has enough integrity to not appear at Bachman's show, or that he is very careful about recusing himself on future cases which are supported by the causes tha Ms Bachman esposes.

Steve (the real one) – According to those who wrote it (the Constitution and the Bill of Rights)... you are wrong.
It is there, just not explicitly. The term 'separation of Church and State' was coined while explaining a right that anyone, who has not religious bias, can see in the 1st Ammendment.

Fantastic... Hardly anyone in office believes in the Constitution anymore, and it's a crime. When Pelosi was asked where in the Constitution does it give the right for gov't to force citizens to purchase something, she asked "Are you serious?". Are you kidding me Pelosi? Good riddance.

I like the message, I weep the messenger. I hope Ms. Bachmann sits front and center of EVERY class held - and finds a way to let Sarah Palin crib in the back.

jeff, alabama – Have you bothered to read the posts? The problem is not learning about the Constitution, the problem is to pretend to know the Constitution by heart in order to get elected and then, AFTER THE ELECTION, start to read about it...

Will Scalia bring his buddy Dick Cheney to teach Congress how to out a CIA agent? Or how to rape, pillage and plunder foreign countries? Or maybe how to steal trillions of dollars of retirement savings from working class Americans who saved for over 50 years? What's next? A return to slavery so corporations can maximize their profits even more? Welcome to the Corporate States of America. Team TeaParty has been had. They were told to hire lobbyists as their CoS. Does anyone really believe they will not do what their told by their new corporate owners? Please. Wake up people. Greedy corporations are like roaches – nothing will be able to stop them from taking over your house unless you call an exterminator. Good Luck America – you're gonna need it.

Please CNN, post this one and not the one with the typo
STEVE RAYMOND – He, Barack Hussein Obama (The President of the United States of America) learned about the Constitution in Harvard and then, 'cause he learned so much about the text and its implications, he gave lectures and classes about it.
You? What are your credentials regarding your knowledge about the Constitution?

It's a beautiful thing that we are sending people to Washington who need to be "schooled" by a right wing activist Supreme Court Justice.
