TRENDING: Huckabee takes Michelle Obama's side over Palin

(CNN) – Mike Huckabee is weighing in on the Sarah Palin v. Michelle Obama face-off when it comes to suggesting nutritional guidelines for Americans – and he's taking the First Lady's side.

"With all due respect to my colleague and friend Sarah Palin, I think she's misunderstood what Michelle Obama is trying to do," Huckabee, who has long documented his own battle with weight said Tuesday on the "Curtis Sliwa Show."

Huckabee's comments come in response to a remark from Palin on her TLC reality show Sunday during a scene in which the former Alaska governor is seen making s'mores - the not-so-healthy dessert of chocolate and marshmallows.

"[This] in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert," Palin quipped as she served up the tasty treat.

But it's not the first time Palin has taken a jab at Mrs. Obama over her campaign to discourage fattening foods, especially from public schools. The former vice presidential nominee told conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham last month that "the first lady cannot trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families in what we should eat."

Palin also hand-delivered cookies to a Pennsylvania school last month before delivering a speech there, saying: "Who should be deciding what I eat? Should it be government or should it be parents? It should be the parents."

Meanwhile, Mike Huckabee has previously expressed support for efforts to improve America's eating habits, himself having once weighed in at 280 before shedding 110 pounds in 2004. He's also the author of the 2005 healthy-lifestyle book, "Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork."

Palin's comments Sunday were in reference to a speech Michelle Obama delivered in July, during which she described her own upbringing when it came to food and exercise.

"In the afternoon, there was no way we'd be allowed to lie around the house watching TV," she told the NAACP in a Kansas City speech. "Our parents made us get up and play outside."

"As I tell my kids, dessert is not a right," she added.

CNN is obsessed with Sarah Palin. They have something about her EVERY SINGLE DAY! It's quite hilarious how frightened the left is of her!! They have to spend 75% of their time trying to cut her down.

THANK YOU Mr. Huckabee !! Lack of exercise and improper eating by Americans has a big negative besides extra weight. It's called DIABETES !! I do not know the exact numbers but diabetes is about 50 % of the population. A disease that is as traumatic as cancer. Sarah needs to show respect and knowledge but she has neither.

What is more delightful, especially during the holiday season, then people taking jabs at Palinstein's Monster.

I think Sarah is starting to look a little worn out.

Really. Palin can't/won't grasp the content or endorse Michelle's efforts to promote better health...and instead decides to show everybody by taking cookies to schools? Wouldn't you just love someone with that lack of reasoning skills and mentality to try to run a country? Palin, you are an embarrassment to the female gender. Shut up.

I like this guy. And I love that the Republican "men" are starting to man up when it comes to Palin. She is either a liar or an idiot. Some may say both!

The really ironic thing is this... When Palin delivered those cookies to the school she circumvented the parents right to decide if their kids could have one....

Now that is a sincere man who does not tow party lines for the sake of it. Palin is wrong here. She is wrong all the time. Pandering to white racsit America will only get you so far Sara Failin. Gov of a state that has a massive oil revenues and she still quit coz the going got tough. She is lives in a glass house when it come to family. Mismanaged her own family. If she could not keep control of one teenage daughter how is she going to keep control of rogue Nations. I was thinking of boycotting CNN because of their incessant reporting of this moron but realised that there is a method to the madness. Keep it up CNN till 2012 wink wink -Imagine Todd Palin determining trying to intimidate people on her behalf like he tries to now on her behalf– Hey Mr President of France quit talking about my wife that way or I will kick your behind!!

So now we can look forward to a sparring match between Caribou Barbie and Huckleberry Hound?!

Mike, please remember, you're dealing with an idiot. Since when has she given a hoot about the health and welfare of children. Look at her own daughter and the subsequent baby she had – do you call that being vigilant or advocating for children when you don't even have the attention of your own?!

Five will get you ten that she can the buffet from her front porch, too! *WINK*

It seems that Sarah always takes the controversial side of every issue. If she can't slam the left, she'll slam the right. I believe she does it for the same reason Limbaugh and Beck do it. Because the controversial side is the one that gets the ratings. And like them, she sometimes ends up sounding a bit foolish. Who would fight the government wanting children to eat nutritioius foods? Jeez you don't always have to pick a political fight over every issue.

Duh, ya think? Mark my words, Palin will never run in the primary.....she's spewing out her sound bytes for reactions like this to stay in the limelight. She loves the media, the money she makes is now just a bonus.

This goes to show how far ignorant this woman who wants to be president is. Palin would do herself great honor if she learnt to shut up.

If you take even a casual glance at statistics on child obesity, any idiot could understand that many parents do NOT take an active interest in this subject. Unfortunately, the Quitter doesn't understand statistics, as that is approaching the subject of science.

Thank you, Mr. Huckabee. We have some seriously dietary problems in this country. Of course the government shouldn't dictate what we eat, but it should help guide in making healhier eating decisions. Sarah Palin ought to pick her battles a little more carefully. She once again is demonstrating her complete lack of intelligence.

Mike Huckabee understands conservatisim in a way that hacks like Palin, Beck and Limbaugh could only dream of. Add Scott Brown to that list as well.

I'm surprised to hear Huckabee back Lady Obama, but good for him, and good for America.
What I find absolutely hysterical is Palin's view: "Who should be deciding what I eat? Should it be government or should it be parents? It should be the parents."
I wonder what her view on legalizing certain things the government has restricted...like flavored cigarettes...or things that have been illegal for almost 80 years? LOL

Are you kidding me CNN? You take a sarcastic, joking remark made in jest and post it on your site for two days. Then post other people's responses to the joking remark. This is not news. It is you trying to stir up controversy where none exists. No wonder you are losing your viewership base. Try reporting real news. Someone making a joke about a desset is not relevant.

I don't agree with Husckabee on a lot of things but I'm glad to see him on the side of common sense. Obesity is a national health concern and Palin's plan is to keep feeding deserts to everyone. What an idiot.

you notice the one voice absent in this so called "face off" is the one of Michelle Obama. I think it's because Mrs. Obama has too much classs to even get into this debate with the likes of Sarah Palin who is doing it no doubt for publicity. Her approval ratings are down as well as her book sales and she has this need to be in the public spotlight. But I'm sure Michelle Obama is aware of the saying that you can NEVER win an argument with a fool and has chosen to just ignore her. In the meantime ol' Huck may want to be careful because his friend really doesn't like it when folks are critical of her or disagree with her. She's NEVER wrong u betcha!

Is Palin running for First Lady? Don't understand the attacks on Michelle Obama. How about some statments with substance about the issues concerning the country?

One of the few times Huckabee and I agree! Does Palin live in a vacuum? Does she not READ about the growing problem of obesity in our children? Has she not READ about the increase in diabetes in children? Apparently she does not read – remember the interview with Katie Couric? She just uses Conservative dogma when it suits her! Typical of the ultra-right wing of the GOP. Hey who would have the time to read if they are running around the country spewing hate and stupidity while making gobs of money from those who cannot afford it all?

Note that Sarah Palin is a fitness fanatic who runs several miles every day. Anyone who really thinks that *she* doesn't eat healthy foods and avoid dessert is delusional.

Good for you Huckelberry. I don't agree with you 95% of the time but this is a real issue that requires attention. Old Failin Palin would be the first to cite statistics about how overweight people drain the budget with their "self-induced" diseases and health care costs. NOW she just likes to rip Michelle Obama for fun. She is beyond stupid
