(CNN) – Mike Huckabee is weighing in on the Sarah Palin v. Michelle Obama face-off when it comes to suggesting nutritional guidelines for Americans – and he's taking the First Lady's side.
"With all due respect to my colleague and friend Sarah Palin, I think she's misunderstood what Michelle Obama is trying to do," Huckabee, who has long documented his own battle with weight said Tuesday on the "Curtis Sliwa Show."
Huckabee's comments come in response to a remark from Palin on her TLC reality show Sunday during a scene in which the former Alaska governor is seen making s'mores - the not-so-healthy dessert of chocolate and marshmallows.
"[This] in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert," Palin quipped as she served up the tasty treat.
But it's not the first time Palin has taken a jab at Mrs. Obama over her campaign to discourage fattening foods, especially from public schools. The former vice presidential nominee told conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham last month that "the first lady cannot trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families in what we should eat."
Palin also hand-delivered cookies to a Pennsylvania school last month before delivering a speech there, saying: "Who should be deciding what I eat? Should it be government or should it be parents? It should be the parents."
Meanwhile, Mike Huckabee has previously expressed support for efforts to improve America's eating habits, himself having once weighed in at 280 before shedding 110 pounds in 2004. He's also the author of the 2005 healthy-lifestyle book, "Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork."
Palin's comments Sunday were in reference to a speech Michelle Obama delivered in July, during which she described her own upbringing when it came to food and exercise.
"In the afternoon, there was no way we'd be allowed to lie around the house watching TV," she told the NAACP in a Kansas City speech. "Our parents made us get up and play outside."
"As I tell my kids, dessert is not a right," she added.
I cannot forgive John McCain for unleashing this newest "Munster Family" on the American Public. Lets see. Sarah is the the Mother of the most famous knocked -up "teenager in America" now preaching abstinence. You have to be dumber than a "bucket of rocks" to get prognant after the age of 40, knowing the risks, and also knowinly bringing a challenged child (we used to call them Retarded) into the world. She is running around the country and doesn't even take care of the kid. I could go on and on and . . . . .
Sarah Palin has the intellectual abilities of a 6 year old. She will no doubt now start attacking Huckabee. You see, in Sarah's world, you are either completely with her, or against her. There is not "in-between". A childish woman pandering to a childish crowd.
Even though I disagree with Mike on almost everything, I'll say thanks for this. Mrs. Obama is NOT trying to get the government to tell people what to eat. We have an obesity problem in the US. Schools are funded by the federal and state governments. They should HELP in the fight against obesity by providing good food choices for our kids. Dessert is fine, but why not make it a healty choice. I'd prefer my kid's school to offer fruit or something like that vs a cookie and ice cream at school.

Looks like Huckabee is already starting his 2012 bid with laying the ground work of being the not so crazy Tea Party candidate. Also, if my taxes are paying for you to eat, we should be allowed to make the menu. Palin attacking Michelle proves once again how low she will sink. Also what her qualifications again, being a quitter?
Sarah Palin is a nit wit. Seriously, would she have been against Nancy Reagan's Just Say No campaign. Who was Nancy Reagan to tell our children not to take drugs, it's up to the parents. Clearly, she's right when half of the kids in the country are obese....most parents are too lazy to make sure they're kids are healthy. Its easier to stop in McDonalds and plop down in front of the TV. I think its funny that Huckabee is saying he thinks Palin misunderstood what MObama was saying, I mean doesn't Palim pretty much not understand ANYTHING?
It amases me how many people worship this lady who has the mentality of a high school cheerleader.
Not only is she not educated enough to hold an important office, but has proven time and time again that she lacks the common sense most people are born with. This vindictive attitude towards our current administration is not only childish and stubborn but most unpatriotic. You can disagree with a candidate all you want, but then when the votes are in and the people have stoken, be mature enough to move on and get things done.

Why does CNN cover this moron Palin? She is totally stupid and only attracts people with the same IQ level as she has, about the same as her shoe size. Her arrogance and feeling that real people want to listen to her opinions, which they don't. She is an embarrassment to this country and what the US stands for. .She "hides" out at book signing in the dumber parts of the US who think she is a saviour..like Iowa, the midwest and south. I would love to see her try and show up in real cities, where people would eat her up. She is so full of herself and CNN should be ashamed to even give any coverage of this jackal.

I don't like the man's politics, but I have a load of respect for Huckabee as a person and a politician. I may be wrong, but I don't recall a time where he has taken ignorant shots at his political opponents, which is why he won't win the primary.

I am not sure what Mrs. Palin thinks the First Lady is saying. Parents are welcome send any food to the school with their child when they pack their own lunch. I work in an elementary school....the lunches that we tax payers are paying for are terrible. They are deep fried, full of carbs and saturated fats. I want my tax dollars to go to healthy lunches for the children. I hate paying for crap.

As a parent myself (and one who fed my children wholesome food and taught them a good lifestyle), I have to side with Huckabee and Mrs. Obama on this one. The parents of the U.S. have proven time and time again that they in fact, as a mahority, can't really be trusted with their childrens health. I guess from Palin's perspective, its o.k. to kill the children slowly, allow them to be overweight and lethargic. Is it also o.k. with her if we beat our children within an inch of thier lives? After all, the government says a parent can't do that either...
