TRENDING: Huckabee takes Michelle Obama's side over Palin

(CNN) – Mike Huckabee is weighing in on the Sarah Palin v. Michelle Obama face-off when it comes to suggesting nutritional guidelines for Americans – and he's taking the First Lady's side.

"With all due respect to my colleague and friend Sarah Palin, I think she's misunderstood what Michelle Obama is trying to do," Huckabee, who has long documented his own battle with weight said Tuesday on the "Curtis Sliwa Show."

Huckabee's comments come in response to a remark from Palin on her TLC reality show Sunday during a scene in which the former Alaska governor is seen making s'mores - the not-so-healthy dessert of chocolate and marshmallows.

"[This] in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert," Palin quipped as she served up the tasty treat.

But it's not the first time Palin has taken a jab at Mrs. Obama over her campaign to discourage fattening foods, especially from public schools. The former vice presidential nominee told conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham last month that "the first lady cannot trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families in what we should eat."

Palin also hand-delivered cookies to a Pennsylvania school last month before delivering a speech there, saying: "Who should be deciding what I eat? Should it be government or should it be parents? It should be the parents."

Meanwhile, Mike Huckabee has previously expressed support for efforts to improve America's eating habits, himself having once weighed in at 280 before shedding 110 pounds in 2004. He's also the author of the 2005 healthy-lifestyle book, "Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork."

Palin's comments Sunday were in reference to a speech Michelle Obama delivered in July, during which she described her own upbringing when it came to food and exercise.

"In the afternoon, there was no way we'd be allowed to lie around the house watching TV," she told the NAACP in a Kansas City speech. "Our parents made us get up and play outside."

"As I tell my kids, dessert is not a right," she added.

Our FLOTUS and Mr. Huckabee are correct on this issue. Palin has nothing to talk about on her own, so she talks about others. Get a life Sarah.

"Protecting good health is largely a matter of personal responsibility, but government policy can help. Our new Alaska Health Care Commission will recommend changes that affect the well-being of Alaskans far into the future." -Sarah Palin

"I think she's misunderstood what the First lady is trying to do"? Not a chance, Mike! She's doing what she always does, criticizes everything she doesn't understand and makes a complete fool of herself in the process. Come on, Mike, there is a time to strive to be politically correct and time to call it like it is. Try being honest with yourself and the American people just this once!

Sarah (once again) has got it all wrong! The First Lady was not suggesting that the Government should control but rather parents should carefully decide what is good for their children. As far as School Lunches and in some cases Breakfasts we should be regulating what is the most nutriciuous foods for our young children. Our Military right now has a major problem with the inability to induct young adults into the Armed Forces due to overweight potential enlistees.

And Michelle is such a poster child for good health and good eating habits. I mean IM sure the junk in her trunk didn't come from all the fruit she ate her whole life. IM just saying, the eyes dont lie. It is what it is.

Palin's such an airhead. I suppose she thinks we should take the warnings off cigarettes? Do speed limits represent too much government instrusion? She fails to grasp the simple concept that the poor habits by some ultimately become a financial burden to everyone else.

    She hasn't "Misunderstood"; She's a deliberate demagogue.

She is attempting to polarize the electorate, for her advantage.

    It's working great for her!

Palin is groping to take a cheap shot at Mrs. Obama. Palin does/will not acknowledge that there are many parents who do not make good choices as to what their children eat and has twisted Mrs. Obama's message. Palin also does not address the long-term health problems that obesity in children causes. She only wants to bash Mrs. Obama.

Given the number of extremely fat children (and adults) in America, obviously we cannot "trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families in what we should eat" without some guidance and incentive. Palin is a complete idiot.

"I think she's misunderstood" should be Sarah Palin's tagline.

I would like to add that eating and living healthy is a LIFETIME effort! Not done just for a big event!

I am one of those Seniors who pledged not to be dependent on Prescription medications for my health. I take two different medications for my eyes and that is it! I have lived a lifestyle of healthy eating and excercise for almost 40 years. I do not have Heart issues, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, or severe Joint issues. The usual Arthritis here and there due to aging, but that is it.

I have been a Weight Watcher for all of my adult life. Enjoying ocassional treats, fine wines, in moderation. Having a Spouse who has the BIG THREE against him(Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Blood Pressure), meals are low in Saturated Fats, Salt, sugar, low carb, with lean meats and plenty of veggies and salads.

So when children are taught by their parents how good food can be, they take those life lessons with them and pass them on.

Palin is an immature idiot who has not progressed since 5th grade. Shame on anyone who follows her insanity.

Okay, so why is this story 10% about Huckabee and 90% about Palin? There was ONE sentence about how he thought Palin misinterpreted the First Lady's aim but the rest was redux about what Palin has said and done and nothing about if/how he supports what Michelle Obama is trying to do (and similarly very little about what she IS trying to do). Ugh – CNN should just rename itself to the Palin Network.

Ms. Sarah Palin isn't well informed at the best of times but to misquote Michelle Obama is just plain ridiculous.
Even Alaskans are finally catching on to her ineptitude.

Sarah Palin is a bitter, jealous, ignorant, racist fraud. She pales in comparison to Michelle Obama. She has light years to go before she can even think about competing with the First Lady or any of the past First Ladies for that matter. I'll give Palin credit for being a skilled liar and a fraud for sure. I'm glad the Obama's know how to ignore the Wasilla Imbecilla! She can't touch the Obama's.

I don't agree with Mr. Huckabee very often, but he got it right this time. He speaks from personal experience, whereas, Sarah just speaks to keep her name in the news. It doesn't make much difference to her if what she says makes sense, just as long as it gets her noticed.

I guess Palin thinks Barbra Bush's Literacy Campaign was intrusive Government as well?

Wow! While I rarely agree with Mike Huckabee's position on anything, I have to say that he hit the nail on the head with his stance on eating and desserts. Perhaps after Ms. Palin continues to bulk up (compare picture of her from the 2008 campaign to recent pictyures and you'll see what I mean) she'll see the wisdom of his views.

That is unless, of course, Grandma Grizzly is just beginning to store fat for the winter.

Thank you, Mike! this is only one of pretty much every issue Sara is wrong about. nobody's saying the government is going to tell you what to feed your kids, they're just helping parents make healthier choices. if laura bush had done it, i'm sure sara would've praised her for it. but if mrs. obama raised the dead, sister sara would diss her for it.

Sarah is so dumb, even a 5th grader is smarter than her. Maybe she should become President and than all those stupid people that support her will finally understand how their stupidity is detrimental to all Americans. Sometimes the only way for stupid people to learn or change is through the hard way. Americans seem to be choosing the hard way a lot lately.
