(CNN) – Mike Huckabee is weighing in on the Sarah Palin v. Michelle Obama face-off when it comes to suggesting nutritional guidelines for Americans – and he's taking the First Lady's side.
"With all due respect to my colleague and friend Sarah Palin, I think she's misunderstood what Michelle Obama is trying to do," Huckabee, who has long documented his own battle with weight said Tuesday on the "Curtis Sliwa Show."
Huckabee's comments come in response to a remark from Palin on her TLC reality show Sunday during a scene in which the former Alaska governor is seen making s'mores - the not-so-healthy dessert of chocolate and marshmallows.
"[This] in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert," Palin quipped as she served up the tasty treat.
But it's not the first time Palin has taken a jab at Mrs. Obama over her campaign to discourage fattening foods, especially from public schools. The former vice presidential nominee told conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham last month that "the first lady cannot trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families in what we should eat."
Palin also hand-delivered cookies to a Pennsylvania school last month before delivering a speech there, saying: "Who should be deciding what I eat? Should it be government or should it be parents? It should be the parents."
Meanwhile, Mike Huckabee has previously expressed support for efforts to improve America's eating habits, himself having once weighed in at 280 before shedding 110 pounds in 2004. He's also the author of the 2005 healthy-lifestyle book, "Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork."
Palin's comments Sunday were in reference to a speech Michelle Obama delivered in July, during which she described her own upbringing when it came to food and exercise.
"In the afternoon, there was no way we'd be allowed to lie around the house watching TV," she told the NAACP in a Kansas City speech. "Our parents made us get up and play outside."
"As I tell my kids, dessert is not a right," she added.
You are right Mr Huckabee. Sarah Palin does not have the value of Responsible Parents. She is just like Chicken with all the little chicks. She is very hypocrite on this matter.
Sarah Palin is oblivious to the fact that American people are overweight. Everyone in the "lower 48" knows this...must be something hidden from those in "Sarah Palin's Alaska." Sarah Palin should take her undergraduate degree in Journalism from the University of Idaho (and five other schools along the way) and keep herself in Alaska where she belongs. Check the poll numbers, Sarah. Clearly, the American people are not fans of yours.
Sarah Palin is such an ignorant moron. So it's ok for her to bring cookies to a school and give to the kids because she says so, but god forbid the government make healthy choices for their school lunch menu. What about kids with Type 1 Diabetes or allergies? Think of that when you were playing politics with our children?
Huckabee had better be careful or the fakey out-doorsey mamie grizzey will getcha ... you betcha.
Is he crazy? I thought he was a Repub and therefore honesty and integrity were only for the over educated, science loving liberal elites? Rush and the Beckler will be tossing poop bombs at him.
In other news, Sarah Palin passed gas as reported by CNN.
Yes, let's not forget...this is coming from the guy who said that allowing sick people to have insurance is the same as insuring a house after it's burned down (it's on youtube).
Palin is nothing but an ignorant woman picking any fight to keep her name in the news... Her argument is pathetic! ...as is anyone who would support such a foolish and childish rant as she tries to use any attempt to stay in the news. Surely she can't really be that dumb to think Michelle Obama's programs equal government interference??? Or can she!
To Sarah P. Everything is politics. Could you imagine going to school to handout cookies to the kids who we are encouraging eat healthy? This lady cannot even lead her own family talkless of leading a village.
Sarah, Sarah, Sarah.... Black is white and white is black. The earth IS round(some what anyway) Your earth is flat.. One thing for sure You will always agree to disagree, At some point in time Your billion dollar backers will see you for the money grabber you are. Using a TV program about Alaska for political gain? What's next, Trig selling us Gold mines?
With all due respect Gov. Huckabee – Palin knows exactly what Mrs. Obama is trying to do – and she is just ignoring it. Trying to make Mrs. Obama's healthy eating initiative look like government intereference with family life is the not the dumbest parallel I have seen – but it's pretty close. I'll be glad when Gov. Palin's 15 minutes are up!
These are very complicated issues for Palin to really understand. Obesity and obesity related health problems in children is the #1 front line issue practioners and the health industry are dealing with. Palin has zero concept of that as its does not involve a moose. Palin is a patholigical instigator and ego maniac and everytime she opens that mouth of hers, she consistently shows just really ignorant she is. She belongs in a Walmart commercial.
She knew exactly what our First Lady was saying. Palin is just a mean-spirited woman who gains pleasure for putting down others. She is classless human being.
Comments like that make Palin what she is...because they are misguided. Every first lady has campaigned on some cause. Nancy Reagan did drugs, which even I as a lib/dem thought was admirable. Does Palin think she shouldnt have done that either because its a parents job? I see nothing wrong with advocating kids to eat healthy.. I mean really what is wrong with that.. and also if schools provide meals to kids shouldnt they be as nutricious as possible factoring in the challenge of feeding hundreds at a time>
Palin makes comments that make her look very simplistic. Obesity is a huge problem in the country. yes its the parents ultimate job, but ot all parents do a great job. I have lovely relatives who let there kids just eat whatever and the kids are getting huge...so if the govt launches a program just showing what it means to eat healthy, etc.. what in the world is wrong with that? not everything is political........
I am sure Palin is dumb enough to pick battles with Nancy Reagan's message of "Say no to drugs" or Barbara and Laura Bush's literacy programs that encouraged reading by youngsters. She probably would have said, "no reading. be dumb like me" to those youngsters.
Come on CNN! Therer's no Obama-Palin "face-off"! There is Palin the idiot period.
If parents are so great at managing their kids' eating habits, we wouldn't have this obesity problem in the first place.
When Palin took those cookies to the school, she was circumventing the parents' right to decide what their children eat. Unless she asked each parent for permission first. Do you think she did that? I doubt it....
Here she accuses Obama of not wanting parents to decide for their kids, and Palin goes out and actually doesn't allow them to decide.
With most people junk food goes straight to their stomach. With Sarah Palin, it goes straight to her head...
I dont like palin
As usual Palin is WRONG on this issue as she is on every other issue that Americans are facing.......she is a very uneducated individual.......if she can't get this one right God forbid her to make informative dicissions on matters facing this country
It is hypocritical that Palin says, "Parents should be deciding what our children eat" and then she takes cookies to a Penn. school and gives them out as treats. Did she ask the parents in that case??????
Yes, the grizzly grifter may want to take a closer look at her younger daughter, Seaweed, who is quite the chubby cub.
Not to mention, that Britan looked like a runaway school bus on the DTWS finalte, in that whirling bright yellow fringe outfit and her partner looked like the driver trying frantically to regain control of the spinning bus!
Missy has 2 chubby daughters and Michelle has 2 fit daughters.
For once I agree with this Huckster.
For once, and likely only once, I agree with Huckabee.
Palin will have ZERO problem telling us how to conduct our business and daily lives. Like no abortion, no sitting around on Sundays without going to church, no liberalism allowed...
Please, please, PLEASE, CNN quit giving Palin a forum.
Palin can be such a fool. Telling kids and parents to help your kids eat healthy is not the same as a country wide ban on all delicious snacks and deserts.
Not to sound like a broken record but can anyone tell me why you are still waisting energy on this women. I think that's been suffictiently stated to ad nauseam already; no one cares
