New York (CNNMoney) - Three days on the job and staring at a $9 billion budget gap, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday he would cut his $179,000 salary by 5% amid reports he will freeze the pay of most state workers.
Cuomo said he is planning a 5% salary cut for senior state officials, including Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy, as well as the governor's secretary, counsel, director of state operations, counselor and chief of staff.

A drop in the bucket, but at least it is something. I wonder if the legislature would do the same with their pay.
Nice gesture on his part. Hope all elected politicians will follow suit.
"Families and business owners in every corner of the state have learned to do more with less in order to live within their means and government must do the same."

This is true for the federal government as well. As far as the pay of top government leaders? It is so insignificant I really do not care as long as their pay is equitable with their job. That's all about emotions like envy and jealousy. I don't spend much time worrying about who is doing better than me. But how they spend our tax dollars that is really important. They need to have a strategy that works for the good of the country. Now and for the future.
5%?? Nothing at that rate. I'l be impressed if it's 25%. Better yet – get everyone under $100,000/yr. Lots of people in NY live on less.
Largely symbolic, but still a meritorious gesture and not without actual impact. This will drive the conservatives nuts. They hate being one-upped with political theatrics. They think they're the only ones who are allowed to enagege in meaningless shenanigans and then claim that the world turns on their political farts.
Maybe the republicans in congress and the senate will ask for no pay or no health insurance in honor of them doing nothing for the American people. For the last two years, the elected GOPers have been part of a big entitlement fraud program.
Put a zero after that 5 and that would be what he's worth....if that!
Good for him. Now if only we could get all of the US Congress to do the same, especially since they only seem to doing anything constructive for the citizens they represent half the time (at best!), that would be significant.
Well, that's looking out!!! Just the other day I said the same about Christie of NJ – while he's CUTTING everything else, why isn't he CUTTING his pay??????? Good job Cuomo – I had to cut my salary too by 2% and I make a "drop in a bucket" compared to what you make!!!
I have gone through all the TV channels, but I must have missed it. Since it was their number one election priority, where can I find the new republican plan to create jobs? All I have seen so far is tax cuts for the wealthy. From "Hell no!" the GOP is now, "Hellifino!"
I think he can afford to cut his own salary, a lot more......but he probably won't.
Cut, cut and rebuild, rebuild.....As long as the American-Manufacturers and business are producing their merchandise
"over-there" and not "over-here" there will be no economic recovery of American jobs, jobs nor the recovery of the
American middle-class........Wealth grows with the production of goods and services and not by buying with borrowed
money. In other words creating the American-economy is wealth and borrowing means..."deficit and debt".......!!!
Notice how the only ones to get their pay cut is workers, and the profits for the billionaires increase in record proportions. Is that republican socialism?
Narrative-ruining explanation and analysis of TX's massive budget crisis and imepnding economic implosion: story at never.
Just watch and wait.
It was supposed to read, . . .is that what republicans call socialism?"
GOP and conservatives will find a way to blast him on this, lol.
