Legislators set sights on 'anchor babies'

(CNN) - A group of state legislators opposed to illegal immigration proposed a legislative "fix" Wednesday that would prevent children of illegal immigrants born in the United States from being citizens.

The group, State Legislators for Legal Immigration, revealed its strategy at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington.

The republicans refuse to follow the constitution by going after the amendments. I wonder how long before Boner introduces legislation to alter the constitution.

" a bill that narrowly interprets the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, and a state compact that calls for two different types of birth certificates, depending on parents' legal status."

And, as we all know, neither would be constitutional. Interpretation of the Constitution is the province of the judicial branch ("judicial review") and a state compact that posits that states will not consider someone a US citizen unless they have two different types of birth certificate, depending on parents' legal status, would clearly be an overreach by states beyond the powers left to them. When exactly do the conservatives intend to stop wassting our time?

Note, of course, that they require TWO types of birth cerrtificates. Let's see a list of how many of these fools are birthers regarding Obama who of course, like most of us, has ONE birth certificate.

Please use the correct terminology.... "The Obama Tax Cuts for the Rich". Thank you for your cooperation."

Hey, genius, even were one to attach the blame to Obama for the extension of tax cuts the GOP and Bush passed in 2001 and 2003 via the "jam it down your throat" procedure known as Reconciliation, that extension started FOUR DAYS AGO. The preceding decade of government revenue shortfalls making it necessary to borrow from China to start two wars the Bush Administration orchestrated starting fall squarely in the lap of the GOP. Moreover, it is entirely disingenuous to pretend Obama owns the portions of a compromise that were insisted upon by the GOP. He may own the compromise, and plenty of us are none too happy about the part of it that gave massive inequitable atx cuts to the 2% who are extremely wealthy and for which the middle-class will ultimately have to pay (polls showed the majority did NOT want them extended), but it was the GOP that swore on christ's green grave that they would do NOTHING else until they were assured their rich benefactors were guaranteed to receive continuing assurance that the wealth gap between them and their middle-class paeon indentured servants continued to expand exponentially.

Chop that on your mirror and sniff it..

Birthers in disguise: yes, just look at the race of people represented in photo, you can see that this idea is derived from the loony notion that “one need to prove” that their parents were US citizens before being allowed to run for presidency. Dial this to opposition to Obama based on race. You can call it whatever you want, spin it till chicken come to roost but it is clear that the fear of Latinos becoming a majority in this country, and perhaps, just perhaps, keeping democrats in control for who knows how long is driving this “anchor baby” nonsense. People, rise and fight this…don’t for a minute under-estimate the birthers.

  7. Democrats Class Warfare - Destroying the economy and country

About damn time!! The progressives in government and the courts have perverted the meaning of the Constitution in this area. Common sense dictates that a Mexican father and a Mexican mother cannot produce an American citizen!!! It isn't the piece of land they are born on that matters, it is the citizenship of the parents!

This should be done. A lot of them come here just to have children and then take advantage of our healthcare and unemployment benefits. This should be stopped and stopped now.

If you want to change the 14th Amendment then you have to pass a new amendment. The process is clearly defined in the constitution. I won't accuse these guys of racism; what they're doing is more political partisanship. They're terrified of anything that could lead to citizenship for illegal aliens because most of these people are poor and minority and likely to vote democrat.

That's the whole sticking point on immigration reform; the potential for up to 10 million new democrats.
