Murkowski: Dems don't have cooties
Washington (CNN) - Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, asked reporters covering Tuesday's State of the Union address not to spend too much time focusing on prom-like questions about where Republicans and Democrats are sitting, but instead to concentrate on the content of President Obama's speech.
"It's like going to the prom and who's wearing what dress," Murkowski said. "And to a certain extent this has been a little bit of a dating show. You know, who are you going with? Reminds me a little of 8th grade."
Murkowski spoke at a news conference with Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colorado, and other early proponents of the bipartisan seating arrangements that have dominated much of the news coverage of the annual speech.
"It should be the content of his speech and not necessarily where everyone ends up sitting," she said.
Despite her plea, Murkowski and Udall couldn't stop themselves from playing up high school themes.
"There are no cooties" to be spread between Democrats and Republicans, Murkowski said.
Udall said the bipartisan seating plan was aimed at stopping the "high school pep rally" atmosphere in the House chamber as members of one party cheer the president's remarks while members of the other party sit with their arms folded.
'We want to change the tone and show the public that we can work together," Udall said.
Murkowski said she has a "double-date" for the speech with Democratic Sens. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland and Daniel Akaka of Hawaii.
Udall said he has a "mystery" guest who will be revealed later in the day.

It's about time. Enough of the rudeness, shouting and disrespecting the President by the Republicans. Bring something useful to the table or don't bother showing up to work.
Of course, Murkowski has to use a word like "cooties" to get her point across: The Republicans have shown us time and again they are infantile in their approach, what with their "mean girl" candidates like Palin and Bachmann; the way they vilify anyone who disagrees with them; their childish obstruction of everything President Obama has tried to do, regardless of the negative effect on our country – simply because THEY LOST IN 2008!

What "plans"? The policies that pulled our nation back from the brink of economic disaster? The signing of the START treaty, which extended the provisions Reagan put into place? The passing of health care reform which is virtually identical to what Richard Nixon proposed back in 1972? Extending unemployment benefits to people WHO HAD PAID INTO UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE FOR YEARS?

It's not like you can't make gestures of civility without concentrating on the content of President Obama's speech.
Politics is not a "contact sports game" like football and these people in Washington need to realize what they say and how they are preceived has an impact on all Americans lives. The real grid iron people are on the football field and not sitting in a comfortable office throwing spit balls at one another, they need to get over themselves and work on getting Americans jobs and instead of working on their personal campaigns.
Just to be safe, Joe Biden will be giving out cootie shots to everyone at the door.
